NFS: Shift - BSOD's During Install

(originally posted in the NFSS X360 / PS3 thread)

I have been unable to complete installation of NFSS and have pretty much given up after 3 days of trying, so I figured I'd take one last shot here at DH in hopes that any of you might have some insight to share.

-Installed the Demo and it ran flawlessly (was actually quite impressed with performance as well as the game itself).

-Made haste to my local game vendor.

-Uninstalled Demo and deleted the entire EA folder and its remaining contents / defrag, all the usual stuff.

-Upon attempting to install the retail version the installer completes DirectX installation, then at approximately 15% of the game install, it's about 50/50 whether my system hangs or BSOD's (Ive had around 10 of each).

-On a hunch, I updated the firmware for my plextor drive from 1.10 to 1.11, and since, I have not had any BSOD or hangs during the actual install. Instead, at around 15% of game install I recieve a notice that the installer can not find file: Shift/Movies/ORG_03_Regional_Type.BIK.

-Browsing the DVD to the above file results in a BSOD upon attempting to unzip it.

Not really sure what else to try, the disc looks to be pristine so I hesitate to think it is a damaged disc. Any ideas?

Re: NFS: Shift - BSOD's During Install

The whole game is kinda buggy. Some people have had to run it in compatibility mode (Windows 98/ME) just to get into the first race. I guess you may just have to wait like me for them to fix the problems. Seeing as it's such a recent release, bugs like this are expected.

But, I'm not too sure if your problem and mine are related. What OS are you running?

XP.

If you have managed to install the game, then I doubt our problems are related as I cannot even complete the install. At this point I'm guessing that I either have a defective disc or possibly even a defective DVD drive. I'm gonna go exchange the disc in a bit to see if I have different results with a new one...

Yup. Defective disc. Any problems with the game from here on out will be infinitely more acceptable than the first go round.

Agreed about EA though, when I think back across the litany of problems I've encountered over the 18 years that I've been playing PC games, by far the most of them have been on EA titles. I suppose unreached potential and bugginess in general is something we have all come to expect from an EA game. Sad, but true.

Same happened to me for WoW WotLK. I called tech support. EA has a tech support, give them a try.
