Default Post PS3, my experience with

Earlier today/yesterday, I received my very first PS3. It's the 250GB slim model (euro PAL).
I have yet to try either of the games that came with it (Infamous and Killzone 2). I plan on doing that tomorrow.

A few points so far. I have 2 Xbox 360s, 1 Wii, 1 DS Lite. I am going to make some comparisons between the PS3 and the Xbox 360. I won't mention the Wii since they are not in the same league as far as I am concerned. (NOT a Nintendo fanboy)
The controller feels slightly worse in ergonomics, but at the same time the buttons feel much better than the Xbox 360's controller.

It's good to see any equipment that comes with USB cables. I forgot that it is possible. For a HD console to only include composite cables is a bad bad joke by Sony. What were they thinking?

The console feels much smaller, but it isn't, than the Xbox 360. The external materials feel MUCH better than the Xbox 360 and I would say the PS3 Slim looks more beautiful and less like a cheap PC than the Xbox 360. (ok, one Wii comment, Wii looks absolutely great and much better than any of these two).

The set up of the console, including the internet connection was a breeze. It took a couple of minutes and was far far better experience than with the Xbox 360.

The downloading of the latest firmware took too long, a few hours and it is just 150 or so MB from what I know. The 360 updates take few seconds at most most of the time.

The GUI of the OS of the PS3 is superior to the new version of the 360. I find the 360 version after the major update (with the action figures and remove of the blades etc) to be a laggy mess. The PS3 one looks and works so much faster it isn't even funny how bad the 360 feels in comparison.

The download section of the PSN is much faster, more responsive and better looking than the 360 Marketplace. But for one thing. Unless I am mistaken, you cannot just browse through demos only, or full games only, etc.If this is true and not something I missed, WTF SONY? WTF?

The download speeds for demos is great.

I will keep updating this as I learn the PS3 more.

It's basically the same controller as the PS2 Dual Shock but wireless...I'm glad Sony didn't mess with what works. The 360 controller is up there with the N64 gamepad when it comes to terrible design.

Save money of course! My 360 Pro also lacked HDMI cables. It's kind of a joke too since these cables only cost a couple of bucks online but Sony/MS like to make big bucks marking them up as accessories. Unfortunately, I bought one of these expensive MS HDMI cables before I figured that out.

Only took a few minutes for me, longest part was installing it if I recall correctly.

I hate the Sony marketplace, all I've used it for is demos but there's too much clutter (PSP demos included with PS3 demos), the 360 lets you access demos so much quicker I'd like to see that.

Re: PS3, my experience with

My 360 120GB I bought a year ago, and the 20GB I bought in 2006? both had HDMI cables with them.

Yeah, I have plenty of HDMI cables, but thank gods the joytech hdmi switcher I ordered with the PS3. My monitor has only 1 HDMI (+1 VGA, Component) and it would be a pain. This little thing (bought for 22 euros) is awesome.

I like the PSN store, what I don't like is the total impossible to understand why they don't organise it better. Alphabetically is nice, but what would be better is to be able to choose what you look at, demos, full games, etc.
The speed is fine too.

I have a question about it. When you download a demo, you also have to install it, unlike the 360 way it is done automatically or not done at all I am not sure. The thing is, how do I check what exactly is installed or downloaded in terms of space in the HDD? I can find out how much free HDD I have in total, but I can't see each "folder"?

Re: PS3, my experience with

I played a few demos so far. Something might be wrong with the picture. Everything looks...rough. Is there a way to know for sure if I am getting the picture quality I should be getting?

Go to display options and make sure 720p and 1080p are checked. I had 720p unchecked yesterday and when I launched Dirt 2 demo it played at an ugly 480p.

Re: PS3, my experience with

All of them are checked. from 5xx up to 1080p

I think the problem was with my monitor's options. I played with them a bit and the image quality improved a lot.

So far tried 2 demos, Mini Ninjas, which is just cute beyond belief, and Fatal Inertia EX which so far feels like a very fun arcade racer. Whoever thought of the cable as a weapon is a genius lol.

I also watched a DVD movie, the Fifth Element. Is it my imagination or it looks better played on the PS3?

So far I like the PS3 slim, a lot.
And I haven't even played the two games with it yet!

About the controllers...
I like the Xbox 360 controller very much, but for some reason this dualshock 3 controller feels hour by hour a better controller to my hands.
I just wish someone would make larger controllers. The original Xbox controller must have felt good.

I bought my 120GB PS3 Slim a few months ago and have been playing it more than my XBox 360. My only complaint is it won't play PAL DVD's. I have to play those on the 360.

Re: PS3, my experience with

I played few more demos and started the story mode of Infamous.

First the bad things.

Where is the AA? I know there was supposed to be very little or none at all on PS3, but this is crazy. the aliasing looks like what it should be at 640x480, not at 1080p.
It's very bad. On Infamous looks very bad too, the cars, the buildings, everything, even the head of the main character. It's like they were trying to create as many corners on shapes as possible...it's just bad. For some reason on the Xbox 360 it doesn't look that bad (other games of course).

OK, bad aside, the games I tried play just fine, and the game Infamous is very fun to play. You have to rethink the way you play shooters (because it is almost a third person shooter, just that you don't have a gun), and also (to borrow from Codemasters), think vertically. At one point there were several enemies, hiding because obstacles and shooting at me, making it difficult to get a clear shot without risking getting too much hurt or dying. Then I thought about it and looked around. The battle was taking place on almost ground level. Nearest to my left there was a tall apartment block. There were some garbage cans on the street and some pipes over them. I started climbing till I reached the top, then slowly "sniped" the enemy downstairs. The battle from grade A difficulty, became a D. Very satisfying.
There are very few moments without action and how you can climb and jump from and down on almost anything cannot be underestimated, very fun game so far.

One more question about the need for AA. How do all the screenshots of PS3 games manage to look like they don't need any? Is this a cover up, is my console or monitor broken, am I too picky due to PC gaming?
While I suspect the reason for the edges is the upscaling that apparently takes place in all games, that doesn't explain the lag of them in screenshots.
Anyway, not a game or console killer, just annoying.

Re: PS3, my experience with

For the first time I played (or tried to) some PS3 games on a 22" LCDTV. Graphics are way better than PS2. Assassin's Creed 2 on PS3 was almost as good looking as on the PC...but maybe because I was standing two feet away on PS3 rather than inches away on PC.

I guess PS3 games are better played on bigger monitors (32" and above) to be fully enjoyed?

I still prefer keyboard and mouse for shooter games thougn...

Re: PS3, my experience with

ACtually, for FPS, it's the strangest thing. Although of course I am incredibly accurate and good with keyboard and mouse, many times I enjoy more the FPS on a console with a gamepad. Something about pressing trigger like buttons and vibrations, or something, that makes it more fun.

No contact yet, it looks like I will be lucky if I get even one of them.

Anyway, Infamous is getting better and better the more I play. I am now used to the rough edges and I just enjoy the game which must be said is shockingly good (get it?)

I don't agree. I prefer the Xbox 360 controller. I have three reasons.

  1. The ends of the sticks on the Xbox 360 controller are concave and those on the ps3 controller are convex. I find the ps3 sticks more slippery. I believe it's because they are convex and it also because of the type of material used.
  2. The parts on each side that rest in your palms are smaller on the ps3 and my hands hurt faster on the ps3 controller because of that.
  3. The triggers on the ps3 controller can be activated when putting the controller down on a table or couch because they protrude from the controller.

I find it slow too. The ps3 marketplace takes a lot of time to download the pictures of the games. When you click on a game to download it, you have to wait for the game description to appear before you can click on download. I don't like how you have to click on download in the background for all the game you queue to download. This should be the default setting.

Re: PS3, my experience with

I disagree.

1)I find the analog sticks to be more easy to control with the PS3 controller. For some reason the 360's sticks slip more easily out of my finger than the PS3's, although you wouldn't think so by just looking at the sticks, it is what is happening with me.

2)The 360's pad's body does feel a bit easier to keep in my hands, but not sure yet if it is something to get used to or not.

3) True, but since I always place it down when I have a game paused or at the main XBM eh menus, it doesn't cause anything.

It's still too early for me to decide which pad I prefer more, but so far I like the dualshock 3 plenty.

Funny thing about the marketplace. While I agree the design sucks ass, the speed of the whole GUI is much faster to me than the 360's. When the 360 had its update (last year?) with the new dashboard that removed the blades, the whole experience is nothing but slow, glued, terrible experience. Pages load slower, downloads take longer to commence, etc. Compared to it, the PSN Store is very fast and fluid. Even the delay for the downloads is shorter than with the 360's.
It also feels like it is loading games faster and quits games faster than the 360.

What I definitely do not prefer is the extra delay to manually install even the demos which can take a couple of min or something. With the 360 you download a demo, that's it, here you also have to install it..sucks.

I totally agree with you on that. Every time I install a demo, I go do something else for a few minutes.

At the very least, it would be nice to be able to queue demo installations to install more than one at a time.

Re: PS3, my experience with

It's quite interesting as i've seen about 20+ Xbox360's... and what i find very very interesting about that is that each one seems to move or run differently in some cases.

For example the very first Xbox360's that came out with the update, a good majority of them seem to be quite sluggish on the new interface, taking a little longer to do things, meanwhile on the more recent on things move relatively quick and smoothly. The next versions are fast, and the newest one is about the same too.

Not all Xbox360's are made equally, I've since gotten the newest one, and it's speedy, there is ZERO delay in doing any action on the new interface at all. Smooth as silk, downloads are fast.

vs the new PS3 slim i've recently sat down to play with, there simply isn't any comparison.

Judas, there might be not any comparison, but since not all can read your mind, what do you mean? That the PS3 Slim feels faster or the 360, to you?

I have 2 xbox 360s, one 3 years old and one 1 year old. They feel the same slow when using the "dasbhoard" after the update.
The PS3 slim feels much more responsive.

Re: PS3, my experience with

the xbox360 with the newer consoles all are quick smooth and very responcive.

The ps3 slim i've got.. however.. is about 1 or 2 second delays in places quite often.

I don have an xbox so i cant say for sure , but since there is the same sony here at home i agree on ALL your points

That's the point...

it is quite likely any combinations of factors.... region, internet, various other reason why some machines work differently even depending on where in the house you may be hooking it up... or different revisions of the same hardware.

Yes, but that doesn't change anything for the end user, in this case myself. I don't care if the memory controller is version 1.00003 or 1.000004, or whatever else is the issue. Ever since the new dashboard, xbox 360's GUI (dashboard) sucks in terms of performance.
