Learn to Let Go: How Success Killed Duke Nukem

On the last day, they gathered for a group photo. They were videogame programmers, artists, level builders, artificial-intelligence experts. Their team was — finally — giving up, declaring defeat, and disbanding. So they headed down to the lobby of their building in Garland, Texas, to smile for the camera. They arranged themselves on top of their logo: a 10-foot-wide nuclear-radiation sign, inlaid in the marble floor.

To videogame fans, that logo is instantly recognizable. It’s the insignia of Duke Nukem 3D, a computer game that revolutionized shoot-’em-up virtual violence in 1996. Featuring a swaggering, steroidal, wisecracking hero, Duke Nukem 3D became one of the top-selling videogames ever, making its creators very wealthy and leaving fans absolutely delirious for a sequel. The team quickly began work on that sequel, Duke Nukem Forever, and it became one of the most hotly anticipated games of all time.

Re: Learn to Let Go: How Success Killed Duke Nukem

I don't understand or even think of why they didn't just focus and release it? Maybe their were implicating circumstances that the future they knew having cretaed it would reject therefore sending their company into a downward spiral releasing chaos all over the entire planet.

Edit: Last time I checked though Max Payne was still selling on their homepage.

From what I do remember though was a lot of jealous fans "overmarketing it" when new content about their games was released making such a huge relishing segment about it that wanting it actually hurt to think about it, but I'm still a Duke fan. It was less than a month ago I went through the first level on Duke Nukem 1 completeing it with an above avg" users score.

I just dug out my Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition and played through the first two levels. There is something that just won't let me get rid of it. I still have a blast playing it.

That's part of what made it great.

I'll check out the high rez project. I saw it when I was doing searches for info related to Duke Nukem Forever and the hopefully upcoming Duke Nukem movie.

Quake may not be bad but I was not impressed by Silent Hill. The visuals were pretty good but it just trudged along at a slow pace.

I tend to disagree as it was the atmosphere that told it's fine liners.

lol I remember Shadow Warrior. I think I've played that game the most out of any video game (except maybe CoD4 and Street Fighter).

Hara Kiri Harbor! Best MP map I've ever played. lol.

Dude, I completely forgot about that. Blood, Shadow Warrior and of course Duke were my favorites back in the day.
