It's hard to believe it's been almost FIVE years since our last discussion on Freelancer.

Any Freelancer Players Still Around?

But, recently, my older son and I have begun playing it again. I've set up a server and need a little assistance from someone who may still have the game handy and is willing to spend just a few moments helping us out.

Here's the deal:

You will need to install the game and the 1.1. patch.

I'm setting up the server for Internet access. The server name is: Dyre's Freelancer Server. [Very simple, huh? ]

What I need from you: Can you detect the server at all?

That's it! If you are interested in actually playing online, let me know. I still think it's one of the best Space Sim games around. Maybe never will be as good as Privateer ever was, but, it IS close enough.

Funnily enough, I recently re-installed Freelancer as it is one of my favourite space games. I'll look at your server shortly! :P

OK...so, now we're getting to the nitty-gritty. We do have a physical router and that means I likely have to open ports and all that jazz. If so, I may have to work on this after I get home from work later Saturday night. (It's now just after 6 a.m. here and I work evenings. Am about to get some zzzz's. If you and anyone else is really interested, please continue to post and...exercise patience. )

Indeed, you'll need to get your router to forward your internet IP rather than its own, but once you do that, we should be all set. If you do not want to broadcast your IP over the internet feel free to PM me or add me to Steam and we'll go that way

The server is up. I'll leave it up all day.

I did get the new Freelancer List Server up and running and can see all the other servers online.

Since we are still testing things, a password will be necessary to keep from frustrating people who may want to connect and then get disconnected when we try something else. So, for the time being, the password is:

FLFUN

I do have Steam, but, I'm not attempting to run this from any Steam server.

But, I did just add you to my FL on Steam.

EDIT:

Go to this download page and scroll all the way to the bottom. Install the Global Server Workaround.

Then, go to this link and follow instructions to edit the freelancer.ini. It opens up the game to an alternate global server and is working for me.

And, mine is a belated birthday treat from my older son and daughter-in-law.

I may or may not be able to get back to the house afterwards. I'm scheduled to work this evening. But, the server will be up...barring any interruptions...for testing purposes.

EDIT: I'm having one problem. I don't know if it's a small or large one. But, when I first put up the server and try to connect, it's showing some non-IP address. It takes awhile, but, eventually resets to the correct IP address.

So, I need to know if there's a way to force the server to immediately broadcast the correct IP instead of this odd one.

I'm not sure, but as long as it gets there it should be OK. I have just spent the last 30 minutes on it so it's up and working at the very least :-)

Were you getting any kind of lag or quick hesitations? I'm getting them but wonder if it has anything to do with running the server AND connecting to the game from the same PC? It really interrupts some of the heavy combat sequences. I didn't notice any of this when playing SP.

It was only for 5-10 minutes or so, and caused enemy ships to randomly jerk across the skies, but as I said, I haven't had any issues since :-)

Will be playing again later, but need to watch Top Gear

I have one last problem that I may know the answer to, but need to know the best way to deal with it.

When I try to connect to my own server the IP address is being generated in IPv6 format. I need it to generate in IPv4 format. Otherwise, I cannot connect to play from my own server.

Eventually, the server resets and does generate the correct IPv4 IP address and I can then connect without problems.

So, the question is: Should I simply disable IPv6 on my Windows 7 machine OR is there a way to force the server to only generate the correct IPv4 IP address?

Well, considering that all of bugger all uses the IPv6 format exclusively (The ones that do all have ipV4 fallback modes) I think it's safe to turn it off.
