Star Trek Online - Open BETA

My son and I have signed up for the OB for Star Trek Online.

Star Trek Online

The game is developed by Cryptic Studios [which may be a good or bad thing].

You will need a BETA Key to play through January 26. The full game is scheduled to release in early Feb.

If interested, don't bother trying to download from either their BitTorrent servers nor even using the default Download Manager. Just go to FileShack, log in to your free acount and you should be good to go. HOWEVER, the file from FileShack is ZIPped and MUST be extracted to a separate directory. Run the setup from the extracted location and things should work out good.

For those interested, you can take a look at the online manual of the game to get a peak at what the game is about.

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

I entered a contest over on MMORPG.com but didn't win a beta key. I'll admit it would be fun to take STO for a test drive but that's about all I would do.

APB has my attention at the moment and looks like the next game I will actively play.

aren't the beta keys 'free' with a free account at fileplanet?

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

I entered the MMORPG one, then checked out all the other places that were already out of keys, then decided that I don't have time to test this anyway, so why bother chasing after keys. I'm hoping there'll be an infinite trial some time, like there's on Champions Online.

I got a key today, I played about an hour so far. The game still needs some work. I need to play more.

The game is released in less than a month and they just started the beta?
Ouch.

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

I got a key a couple of days ago.
From that content i have met until now i can say that they game is nothing exciting.
The two different combat modes (with spaceship and with your commander on ground) is for sure something unique and interesting.
The graphics are very nice (just a bit worse than AoC and Aion) and the framerate is good on the highest settings on my pc.
Some interesting quests.
Detailed tutorial.
Easy to play, you don't have to be Chuck Norris, just target and fire.
Many features to character customization.
Some bugs and missing tooltips (but it's in beta!).

I enjoyed my few hours on game, but i am not gonna spend more time or money with it.
I would like a bit more action from the beginning.
I am sure the fans of Star Trek will love it (if it gets a minor boost on it's gameplay smoothness)

I have a bad feeling that we will hear many no-life-whiners blaming it. (not here)

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

Just spent a couple of hours fighting off some Orions and some Klingon Bird of Preys and a Klingon Battlecruiser.

The recent patches have been very welcome. One was over 700 MB and updates are coming regularly.

I'm still not sure about if and what subscription I might sign up for but, I do think I'll check it out for at least six months and see how things go.

As stated by Optix Sig, I am excited about the game and hoping I get it for my B-day this weekend, and if my 5870 arrives, Well then let's just say you may not hear from me for a few days. I might be the First U.S MMO related Death... Gentlemen, Start your tricorders.

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

Happy early birthday, SS!

While I like the ship flying I have to agree that the rest of the game doesn't seem that exciting but then again, it is the beta and things can change.

I know that I won't be continuing on after the open beta since my next game is going to be APB, fo' shizzle!

Yep. All Points Bulletin. I already have a crew assembled from people I work with.

Anyway, sorry for the thread derail.

I believe I am finished my 5770 contest entry so tonight will be my chance to put in some more time with Star Trek. Again, I like the ship flying section since it's something new to MMO's. The game as a whole isn't bad but there's just something missing.

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

I played until Sunday night as I did not have time to play after that. The beta got better toward the end but still not perfect.

During the last days I tried it (this is the bad side) :
-The servers crashed for a few hours a few times.
-I appeared as a ship on planets and as a human in space once in a while.
-My teammates did not beam down with me a few times.
-The crafting of the game was mostly deactivated. You could only do some basic stuff.
-There was no attack queuing or it did not work quite right, making it hard to attack as fast as possible (no matter if you used or not autofire). Autofire on the ground got in the way of queuing attacks as you had to repeatedly hit attack buttons to queue the attack before the autofire attack.

They'll eventually fix all that. From what I could see, the developper were fast at updating the game and releasing patch using the bug reports from the users. They released a few patches during the beta.

The good part is that it started getting fun as I got further into the game. I got up to level 11 on a federation character so I got to try the tier 1 and tier 2 ships. It's a bit boring at first as you don't have much different skills and it's a bit too easy. However, as you get your tier 2 ship, you unlock new skills and it gets harder. It starts getting more tactical as you get more skills.

I also tried the Klingons. It was fun but not fun. The resources missions were broken so I could not try them out and I had to grind mostly with one missions I could do as many times I wanted. They have their own style of play. It probably gets better at higher levels.

They might have to rethink the autofire because once you get higher tier ships, you have more weapons and you can't set them all to autofire so you have to click spacebar (it's the default fire all laser/beam weapons key) continuously.

I once got into a big space battle with 20 federation ships against enemy ships. It gets crazy. There's laser coming from all directions aimed at a few enemies ships. The enemy ships go down in a flash when that many ships all attack at once the same ship.

The character creation is good too. I made a custom race for my Klingon character and it looked awesome. It looked like some humanoid superhero. There's still some work to be done to make it even more flexible but it's already pretty well done.

The game can be hard to handle as you get to higher levels because you have so many key to use. On the ground and in space you can attack while moving. So you have a hand always busy with moving, tab targetting and clicking on some key shortcuts all at the same time and when you don't have time to do all that with that hand, you use your other hand to click on skill and attacks buttons and to rotate the view.

I'm not purchasing it for now but maybe I'll do in a few months. The monthly fee will be the same and I prefer to pay for a more polished game.

I'm waiting too, partly because I don't want to pay for "beta" privileges, but my personal life is pretty busy these days and I have a backlog of games: Dragon Age, Ghostbusters, Mirror's Edge and Uncharted. Add on top of that that I want to play Mass Effect 2 and Bioshock 2 before committing to an MMO.

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

I just spent the past 3 hours playing through. It's a LOT more polished than it was at the very first launch a couple weeks ago. I didn't get dropped once during all the time except for when I left the PC with my character talking to the Admiral. Came back and had been logged off for being idle for 15 minutes.

But, had no problem getting back on and picking up with the conversation again.

The more I play this, the more I'm inclined to go ahead and sign up for the lifetime membership. If the game lasts even 2 years it will cover the cost and more. I really don't want to get into a monthly fee situation and I DO have my tax returns coming soon.

The trekker inside me begs me to buy it and a lifetime sub. The gamer and main financial supporter laughs and says "don't even think about it".
I will pass, but I admit I am very interested in it now that I have read few more things about it.

Well you only have til Feb 1st. 240 is 1 year, 4 months in regular sub fees. I'm enjoying it, plus you get to play as a lib borg. + 2 slots. I found it well worth it, the game can only get better, I am getting irritated because if you have graphics ultra high, then it crashes, i think on away missions.

Not sure if it's the same in euros

Not sure if it's the same in euros
I don't have the money, so it doesn't matter. Thanks anyway.

Got home from work just now and am getting a "Retrieving List of Characters" only. Server must still be down or does anyone know for sure what's up?

Yeah it's crashed a couple times today, reading the forums, is freaking hilarious though.

Well, regardless, I think I've convinced myself to sign up for the Lifetime subscription. I'm having a blast with the game along with my older son and some of his friends. We've made a team and it works really well.

That's cool. Well every MMORPG suffers growing pains, made my borg character today, they're pretty cool (lifetime sub = borg officer)

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

Looks like the server's down for the count tonight. I was really looking forward to some fun with my son and his friends. But, it's getting close to time to visit dream land now.

EDIT: LOL! Right after I posted this note the server came back up. I've completed the "Stranded in Space" mission and got my second ship officer now.

Frindle is on a distinguished road

Re: Star Trek Online - Open BETA

Now that it's out of open beta and into Head Start, with a launch coming on 02 February, I'd stay don't buy it and wait a few months.

The problems in beta - from bugs to the sever being down all the time - are still going on.

It's disappointing because this could be a great game. It's just difficult to tell when you can't complete missions, get rewards for those missions you can complete, and when the server is down so much you get about 20 minutes to play each day.

If you haven't bought it, do yourself a favor and wait.
