Have you ever learnt from a game ?
For me , yes. The most common part in games storyline is being betrayed by someone you thought they will never do. Another thing that you have to be a bully to survive.
Well , it isn't just in games. I found it happening in the real life too but in a larger scale and maybe even worse than in games. |

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
You don't have to be a bully to survive. It helps a lot if you can fight back bullies, but you don't have to be one.
I hate bullies and the rare case I encounter one, I let them know. To the original question, when I was a kid I learned a few things about geography and history. Details more like it. I even had a game help me with a couple of assignments. (The game was CyberJudas).

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
Age of Empires and even the cheesy Red Alert series got me interested in history. With Red Alert, it got me interested in reading up on books that have alternate history predictions (what if so and so general was there instead of this one, etc).
The original Need For Speed series got me intersted in cars, then the series started to suck so good thing there was Top Gear on TV to tide me over. lol |

Sorry comp, I know you probably speak Arabic as your first langauge, but saying have you ever "learnt" in a have you ever learned thread is hilarious
![]() As for the topic, I have learned some history, or been inspired to playing some of the WWII games, or The Empire total war games, among others. |

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
The game I took the most from is deus Ex 2, not as good as the first in many terms but it had a story which made me think, it made me think of the future and how we can all contribute to its future.

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
when I was young I enjoyed playing Math Blaster and learned math (or well practiced would be a better word I suppose). Oh and castle of doctor brain, that game was a bitch I don't even know if I could solve all the puzzles today almost 20 years later, haha.

Hate to say it but the only thing that quickly comes to mind is that I have learned how to shoot people and all kinds of military tactics...might come in handy should aliens or russians ever invade
![]() I recall a couple of times learning something for the first time from a game but it was years ago and escapes me at the moment. Wish I could remember

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
![]() You're talking crazy talk. I learn from most games that have some sort of basis is fact, whether it is history, geography or sometime I have even learned a bit about myself, having to react to certain situations. In my opinion games are a great medium to teach and inspire learning. |

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
nah, he's telling the truth.. Some people here in NZ say the same thing. Something to do with british colony history or something.. Brits are crazy.
dunno about the learned/learnt though.. We at school weren't allowed to speak American english but had to speak British english.. but we learned that learned was spelled learned and not learnt

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
I have seen "learnt" before and I am pretty sure it is also a correct spelling.
My problem is at school I was taught british english, while from other sources it is all american english. I wasn't paying much attention to either. Still, Ali is right.

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
I remember in America's Army. They have proper in game lectures and training courses for medical officers and officers. I had to sit through 3 or so 15min lectures (videos..) and then get above a percentage to be able to become a medic. I really learnt alot in that, apparently the questions are taken from the real tests too!

That's because America's Army is our (America's) Foray into getting "gamers" interested in military service, they tried to make it true to life.

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
Yep. Made by the army for the public. I heard they also used it to train soldiers, somehow. I guess for knowledge, but obviously field work would be at a loss...

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
Well as a vet myself, I can tell you no amount of training will ever prepare you for a real battlefield situation, but what it is designed to do is make you calm under pressure, so basically it prevents panic.
Anyhow the game itself tries to show a true to life video game adaptation of how becoming a soldier works, and is, To bad they don't REALLY include boot camp =P |

In COD 4, I learned when you see a frag on the floor dont panic, all you need is to pick it up and throw out to the enemy

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
Old flight game manuals were quite something to read, and with some WW1 game they even included a copy of a contemporary flight manual. Alway put on a double of gloves and scarfs before taking off.
First Age of Empires games had timelines and brief cultural descriptions beyond gameplay necessities or what you'd learn from a history episode on Discovery.I do think that early 3D shooters like Quade did in fact make me more acutely aware of physical surroundings in real life. At least back when I was playing the most. It's something like when walking you may unknowingly move your feet like when you were playing hockey or tennis as a kid, just because your body knows how and it happened to fit the moment. I don't doubt that I'll break a leg some day as a senior because of it... |

It's a bit of a stretch to say that these types of games teach you anything useful in real life. Some will help your brain to become more "responsive" and you'll be more coordinated (hand-eye) but if you expect Modern Warfare 2 to help you on the next terrorist attack on your house, you're screwed. |

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
actually i fairly confident in saying that games that don't focus to much on educating but are fun to play and make you solve realistic issues, require reading and understanding, as well as working with basic and complex problems to solve are even more effective then school.
There are countless RPGs and various other games that excersise the grey matter far better.

Re: Have you ever learnt from a game ?
Playing Uncharted 2 reminded me that games have taught me no matter where you go in the world there will always be wooden crates in otherwise empty rooms...despite the fact that I don't think I've ever seen a wooden crate in person
