Those who may be interested in checking out the action on Star Trek Online can do so for FIVE DAYS completely free of charge. All it takes is getting someone who is now an active, registered player to acquire a Buddy Key and pass it along to you. After FIVE DAYS, the Buddy will have to purchase the full game in order to continue to play.

This option gives one a chance to "try before buy" to see what it's all about.

Buddy Keys Now Available

Have a friend interested in Star Trek Online? Maybe he or she saw you vanquishing a Borg cube and was interested in more? Now, with the Star Trek Online Buddy Key, you can invite them along on your adventures, unrestricted, for five whole days.
Here's how it works:

1. Visit the Star Trek Online Buddy Key claim center to claim your key.
2. Click "Claim My Buddy Key."
3. You'll be redirected to your account page. In the upper-right corner, you'll see a section labeled "Unused Keys." Your Buddy Key will appear there!
4. Send your friend the Buddy Key, as well as a link to the Star Trek Online key registration page. (To claim the Key, your friend will need to create a Cryptic account if he or she hasn't yet.)
5. Your friend is ready to enjoy Star Trek Online. He or she can download the client at our download page.

After five days, your buddy will need to purchase a retail copy of Star Trek Online (and apply a retail key to his or her account) to continue playing.

They're going to be taking the server down in about a half hour for maintenance. Estimate to take about 2 hours. When it comes back up there'll be a patch for the game.

You should go ahead and download the client. I found the Fileshack download to be the fastest one for myself. But, I'm not sure it's still up. It's a HUGE download as you may already be aware.

Anyway, once you get the download and you get the Buddy Key, you need to go to Redeem Your Key option. Getting an account should be easy from that point.

Although, you don't need a Fileshack account to download. I used the free one and it's still pretty fast. I think I got the entire file in about 40-45 minutes.
