Red Dead Redemption

Let's just say I want this, I want this bad.
As a kid I watched way too many westerns. No matter how good or bad it was.
Too bad it is a dying breed.

This game looks like the best that could be, and still run on this generation of consoles (get it?).

I don't know if there is going to be a PC version, my guess is yes, but it might take at least 6 months for it, if ever.

I was planning on changing graphics card (as some of you know), but now...I think I will get this one instead.

Have you played it? Know it? Planning on getting it?

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Bought it for the 360 (PS3 has less resolution and AA) but it will come out on PC I know it. Graphics aren't fantastic, I've seen way better on consoles but it's designed really well so that there's no loading times and terrain looks good. Seems to be GTA IV engine but with less detail to smooth out the framerate.

Technical stuff aside, I like it and it's certainly a better Western than Call of Juarez and that was pretty good. There's things like cattle rustling and breaking in horses which advance your skill set but they're also entertaining and challenging enough that you don't immediately want to get back to shooting people. I do worry the game might succumb to Farcry 2 repetitiveness when enemies become predictable annoyances as you are traveling but so far that's only happened after capturing a bounty.

To anyone that has the game, how do you get the Rockstar code to download DLC's? I couldn't find any serials or keys on any of the booklets inside the case.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

I know the limited/collectors/special editioN comes with a leaflet with a code, haven't heard anything about the regular edition.

You heard that the PS3 is less good in the graphics department? Any link? I guess I could buy it on the 360, but I want to only buy games that are exclusive to it, eh, on the 360.

Not the best video, but http://uk.ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/74...0.html?show=hi They look the same to me. Apart from the usual different lighting that is.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

360 version is better than the PS3 version graphically (sharper, brighter, less blur (someone at Rockstar went nuts with the blur tool), native 720p vs the PS3s 640p, Anti-Aliasing, plus higher rez textures, for instance in the jail scene look at the bricks in the background). This is just the same as with GTAIV, which isn't a surprise given it's the same engine. I can't tell if the frame rate is better on one version or the other, but they both play smoothly, and game play wise they are identical. The kicker for the PS3 is the exclusive stuff. Solomon's Folly Gang Hideout, and Walton Gang Outfit (wearing this makes you a friend to their gang members, allowing you access to the Folly Gangs hideout if I remember correctly, or at least until you attack them...). There is also a Special Edition that includes the Deadly Assassin Outfit (which increases the regen speed of your Dead Eye meter), OST, and exclusive challenges which is available for both versions.

I picked up the PS3 version (still sealed), but I might be taking it back for the 360 version tomorrow. Just can't decide if exclusive stuff is a good reason to keep the PS3 version.

I have a PS3 and 360 but I kinda like using my PS3 more so I was going to get RDR on it until I found these articles.

Analysis: Red Dead Redemption on PS3 vs. Xbox 360 - PCWorld

There's lots more comparison pics out there which are glaringly obvious. PS3 version is just really bad.

Are you sure about the PS3 exclusive? I can't find anything about it, but if you say it is so, it is so.

There's lots more comparison pics out there which are glaringly obvious. PS3 version is just really bad.

In the sixthaxis article it says that the PS3 runs at a lower resolution AND that it has 20% pixels AND that it is zoomed in (PS3) AND that you actually see LESS on the PS3. From their own screenshots (link they provide on the neogaf forum) however, you can clearly see that there is no cropping and you don't have anything cut on the PS3...

Then they continue about seeing fewer objects and with less details. Over and over again, although under different paragraph titles...

I am not saying that the PS3 version is better, just that I find the above interesting...

Also, the comments about how the Xbox 360 version is details and sharp just like the GTA IV version. Now, I played the GTA IV on the 360 and it was the most horrible piece of crap in terms of sharpness and view range, that made me not buy the game for either the 360 or the PC (no PS3 at the time).
So...basically I don't trust them.

If the screenshots are untouched and real, it is a pitty, because the 360 version looks far better to me than the PS3 version and I would rather get the PS3 one where I can play online if I want to.

There is enough time till next month I guess.

Plus I just installed GUN (PC) and, talk about a game which did not age well...

Re: Red Dead Redemption

BlueMak it was this thread that convinced me. Look at this hideous pics

NeoGAF - View Single Post - Red Dead Redemption - 360 & PS3 comparison thread (Bish-approved!)

The way I see it, the consoles are always half a decade old and can't hold a candle to the PC so if I'm gonna play a console game I want the best possible image quality...even a few pixels improvement matters when it's being upscalled to 1080p

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Yeah I saw them too. If it was just the pics I would say hands down I am going to get the 360 version. The HD videos I watched didn't make anything appear this bad (PS3).

I am also thinking about my recent purchase, Sonic & Sega All Star Racing for the PC. Screenshots of it make it look really bad for a 2010 game, but when you actually play you don't see 95% of the "bad" and instead the whole game looks just stunning.

Of course RDR doesn't have you run up side down jumping over a pit of lava at high speeds.

Yeah. PS3 got the Solomon's Folly Gang Hideout, and the Walton Gang Outfit. This isn't including the store side exclusives. Then there is a Special Edition of the game, but the bonus for that edition go with both versions. However, there is no North Am release of the special edition for the 360 here. Only the UK got both. Plus I think the contents of that are different depending on the store. That special edition is what has me considering keeping it as the 2x regen of the Dead Eye skill is damn useful for the beginning to middle of the game so I'm told, although as you go through the game the benefits of the other outfits (excluding the cowboy outfit) outweigh keeping that Deadly Assassins one.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

No doubt the 360 version is better looking, but the difference isn't that big and when you play the game, it's even smaller. We are no where near the Bayonetta scandal and you need a side by side comparison to notice it and stay still, because when in motion, it gets even harder to see a difference.

I went with the Limited Edition for the PS3, for the exclusive PS3 content, which rates higher in my book.

But you do have to wonder, how this turns out be this way. Rockstar says they spend 100$ millions on the game, but apparently they didn't spend it on proper programmers. In these days, there shouldn't be a difference between the PS3 and 360 version, not considering the PS3 is much more powerful, so it's all down to laziness. Consider what a company like Naughty Dog (Uncharted devs) could do with 100$ millions .. :O

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Rockstar definitely didn't do the usual level of beta testing this game, there's so many obvious bugs that I can't imagine how they could have been missed. I've been in a few towns where the horse carriages are shaking like there's a couple getting it on in the back or stuck and unable to move. Worse, a smaller wagon bouncing on the street like it has hydraulics, I got into one of them and it flew up in the air over a house and landed upside down in the dirt. These kids of bugs should never make it into a console version.

I played 2 different friends versions, and decided to go with the 360 one. As I said, gameplay wise they are identical, just as smooth on one as the other. However the 360 was just better looking, and for me that's just as important as whether it's good or not.

Let me put it this way: if you only have a PS3, and like sandbox games like GTAIV, get this game. It is really damn good. If you have both systems, yet most of your friends have this on the PS3, and multi-player is important to you, get it on the PS3. The co-op stuff in this game is a lot of fun (including making your own posses), and the upcoming free DLCs (3 in total, with the first coming next month) is going to enhance this mode even further. If all you care about is the single player, get it for the 360.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Thanks for the tip. (get it? )
I don't really care for the multiplayer part and since the 360 versions looks so much better, I guess I will end up getting that instead.

About 10 days before I do, so hopefully till then there will be either a patch for the PS3 (not going to I know) or announcement or any info about a PC version.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Before I start my RDR session today I would like to add one more annoyance I have with this game, why is the main character such a sissy boy? He looks like a mean sonofabitch but he's always being nice and every mission or side quest I have done was to help some poor bastard out when I'd just as soon shoot them in the face or hog tie them and toss em off a cliff (why can't I do that). Even if you do an evil thing and get away with it it still doesn't change how your character talks in cutscenes from what I've seen (though maybe that changes if as if I get really evil).

One thing I really like is that you're often presented with split second choices when you stumble on a civilian in trouble and if you even hesitate they'll die and the odds of you going out in a blaze of gunfire a few seconds later are very high. Basically, this is not a game to be playing while you're snacking on pizza unless you want to see DEAD in big red letters often. In GTA IV you could take a huge beating and still go on but in RDR it's more realistic and that's a damn good thing.

Man this game looks pretty cool. I wish the PC port would come out. It'll probably take a year before it does though.

Great game, me and some friends like to form a posse and just ride around causing havoc.

Just wish I had my lasso online

The way I see it, the consoles are always half a decade old and can't hold a candle to the PC so if I'm gonna play a console game I want the best possible image quality...even a few pixels improvement matters when it's being upscalled to 1080p
The grass in those comparisons is absolutely killer, the PS3 appears to be missing so much, not to mention the already lower resolution. Ouch.

I wondered what would happen if I left an bounty hogtied on my horse in the path of an oncoming train. I burst out laughing at the result.

Looks like someone made a similar youtube video except they got an achievement out of it.

It's very tough, I need to choose between this or Alpha Protocol. Both look so cool games.

Of the reviews I saw Alpha Protocol was sitting at 6 (Gamespot), B+ (or 6.5, that was from 1Up) or 7 (the average) out of 10.

Average score for RDR: 9/9.5 out of 10.

If you pick up RDR, you won't trade it in anytime soon, so maybe pick up AP first, finish it (or get bored with it, or hate it enough to get rid of it), then trade it in for RDR (and realize that this is the game you should have gotten first). LOL!

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Good thing about buying RDR is it has more trade in value, $45 last I checked which is almost enough to buy a new PC game

I've unlocked Mexico in RDR but I've still yet to buy a fast horse or get any of the good weapons like a sniper rifle...need to buy those things real soon my horse looks like it could die any moment. Is it just me or do you really need to pay attention when coming across bandits attacking stage coaches, by the time I figure out who I'm not supposed to shoot at the bandits kill me.

Thank you. I have already ordered AP (and Infinite Space). I am eager to play the game. The reviews I read so far are (many of them) written by monkeys on crack. They complain about pop in or out or whatever, that is a common characteristic of all Unreal 3 engine, WHILE comparing it with other games using that engine but not mention the same issue on them. They attack the game for being themselves too stupid. When reviewers give bad marks to a game for not looking as good as top of the line shooters, or for having RPG mechanics (they don't get why they need to put experience points into hacking or shooting to be better at either of them), then they should consider themselves very lucky they still have a job or that apparently there is a severe lack of reviewers for hire?

Here is a well written review
RPGamer > Staff Review > Alpha Protocol

I ordered the game from Amazon.co.uk for £17. I would have paid more, but thanks to the low price there, I managed to also order Infinite Space (very hot summer is almost here)

ok I will stop now, I just woke up and

Re: Red Dead Redemption

I enjoyed that write up by RPGamer.

I get the feeling that many of the reviewers just simply do NOT like RPGs to begin with and the whole review process of an RPG is, to them, a drudgery.

But, to see this game mentioned in the same article as Mass Effect and the Tom Clancy series, can't be all bad, either.

I'm looking forward to getting my copy in a couple of days now.

Don't get me wrong. I'll be grabbing Alpha Protocol as well. I like the idea of the game. I like that there is a much greater emphasis on choosing your upgrade paths, your abilities. The fact that you can't be every kind of player in 1 package, and that if you choose a path you have to live with that paths strengths and weaknesses... I love that idea. However, given what's out there, what I have, and what's coming out soon, I'll probably wait a bit. I'll be buying it for the PC, so hopefully the majority of gripes a lot of the reviewers have had will be patched up to some extent when I do get it.

As for Infinite Space.. I totally forgot about that game. Thankfully I get all my DS games for free, but I hope this thing is 1/2 as good as it was hype to be. The IGN review didn't excite me all too much though.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

Try the review on the site I linked (RPGamer).

IS is not perfect, but it sounds like it is one of the best games for it.

As for AP, of course, buy whatever you want whenever you want. I chose AP between it and RDR, but I am still going to buy RDR when I can, although I hope by that time there is some update about a PC version.

Re: Red Dead Redemption

I got so tired of watching my son play RDR, I went and bought Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood the other night for $20 to play on my PC.

So far, I'm enjoying it. One thing that really caught my attention was the fact that this game starts off during the Civil War right here in the Atlanta, GA area where I live now. Landmarks are mentioned that I'm quite familiar with. That just adds a "very cool" feature to the game for me.

Otherwise, I'm enjoying playing between Thomas and Ray and have presently made it to their first stop in Mexico.

I'm kind of surprised there isn't a discussion thread about this particular game here. (In fact, I've been quite surprised at the total LACK of game discussion here.)

Re: Red Dead Redemption

I have the first CoJ game, but I got sick of it after a while. I am not a big fan of changing characters depending on the level of the game.
I never got the sequel due to its DRM (3 activations or something that silly).

I have been thinking of RDR more and more lately. With CoJ not really me, and Gun having got really old really fast (it feels like a mid 90s game, at least graphics wise), RDR is the only good choice for this type of game. I am between NFS Shift, Split/Second and RDR with RDR winning so far. I just haven't decided yet the platform I am going to buy it for.

As for the last thing you mention, I agree. It feels like only the two of us talk about games any more and I don't know why. Is it because of the Summer?

Bound in Blood is actually a prequel to CoJ.

But, what about this DRM you talk about? The disc I got, official, didn't even ask for a CD-KEY and I can play it without the disc in the drive at all. This, even though, it came with a CD-KEY on the back of the manual. I haven't had to touch it and have uninstalled and reinstalled already once.

The main reason I uninstalled is that the game wasn't playing well with my Eyefinity setup. The cutscenes were atrociously zoomed in way too close to the action. Since you did play the first one, I assume there were some Quick Draw encounters. In the Eyefinity, I couldn't even see the top of the handle of my gun, let alone try to work out a location to draw the gun from. And, even though I disabled Eyefinity, apparently my saved games locked in that zoomed in camera setting. So, I tried reinstalling the game and pick up with my saved game. No dice!

Finally, I just created a new Profile and started over with just the single monitor and have enjoyed the game a lot.
