Goodbye Retail PC gaming
I have had it. I have thousands of games and because I used to travel a lot I had to only keep the discs, some manuals and copy the CDKeys, on the disc or on a file.
I tried to install FEAR and I can't find the file anywhere (I have more than one copy). Three different drives, nothing. Of course that is not the only game I have the cdkey there so I am right now very very annoyed. The last PC retail game I bought was Alpha Protocol. It's going to stay there. Sure over the last year not even 5% of the games were from retail, but now it is going to zero. If I don't find one last copy of the files I have on another computer, then I will be left with many coasters. Nice...

Welcome to the world of none PC-gaming, the ship for complete non-gaming is still ready for boarding if you ever want to set sail.

Re: Goodbye Retail PC gaming
None pc gaming? Oh no, I just bought FEAR from Steam (including the two expansion packs I never had for 8 euros) and Alien Shooter Gold Pack from Gamersgate for 2.5 euros or something.
I am not done with pc gaming.

Also, there is a lull in great FPS games now.

Re: Goodbye Retail PC gaming
I lost my key to Call of Juarez when I lent it. Which is of course something that can't be done with a Steam copy.
Apart from that, I think that buying digital is the way to go except when buying semi-recent games, since retail games get discounted more quickly. If you don't much care what you get when, then waiting for Steam sales and the like is the best. |

Re: Goodbye Retail PC gaming
Backlog would be the word I'd use. There's so many FPS titles you could go from playing one to the other and play nothing else; once you add up all the sequels, expansions, mods and console ports you're drowning in first person shit! FEAR is the ideal example of good game ruined by the lack of innovation in its expansions/sequels. I'd liken it to the Saw franchise in that the first was great but by the 3rd time around you groan when they announce another one.
Personally, I don't like Steam because whenever I think about all the times I installed a game from a DVD or CD how much longer would it have taken to download it or back it up via steam. It's a sweet deal if you don't do lots of formatting or want a massive collection of games on the cheap.

Re: Goodbye Retail PC gaming

Re: Goodbye Retail PC gaming
but when you get the urge to play the game "now" as does happen, you can't... which is kind of annoying
