How many of you still game? I've shocked all of my friends by being a none gamer for almost a year now, the reason I quit? I just fell out of it really, I know there's still a lot of regular gamers on here, so I'd just like to ask how many of you all still game?
It seems strange to me that I used to be such an avid gamer in the past, when I look at myself now, I have only one computer (a regular Acer with a 17 inch screen, an HD2400 and only a gig of RAM) with absolutely -no- games on it and strangely enough I feel "free" if there was a word to describe how I feel now. I was the type of gamer who obsessed over every single thing, wanted to do this jump perfect and complete this game just so and all that kind of thing, I finished GTA 3, Vice City and San Andreas to 100% completion (you had to get some outrageous score in Vice City and become a "media legend" before you reached that state of completion just to give you an idea) and when I look at the empty shell of a gamer I've become I cringe at just how into gaming and obsessed with it I was at one time. Perhaps I was too into it, perhaps I took it too seriously and that is why I've ended up in this state that I'm in right now but I can tell you I'm not sad I'm not part of the gaming scene right now and am actually happy I was able to go through a period like that in my life. I doubt I will game again because even thinking about it gives me a headache, I still admire gamers and games alike and have a fond place for them in my heart, but as far as gaming goes, its just not for me, not anymore. So I was wondering, are there any other members on HH that have gone through the same thing or something similar and are not gaming at all nowadays? I guess I'm looking for some kind of solace as well because every time I'm on HH these days I feel kind of like I'm the odd one out, it seems everyone else is gaming and getting a new graphics card (crap I called it a graphics card) every other minute or so, and I'm the only one who just doesn't see the big picture anymore. Please non-gamers, show yourselves and you never know, we might be many enough we can start our own social group over the whole issue

Re: How many people still game?
You think too much. Also, having a 5 year old system doesn't really help with gaming much.
I was never a huge fan of GTA games. They just get boring for me after a while, perhaps to the level of depressing. I have been through phases of not gaming, but they rarely last more than a few days. I still game, every day. If it wasn't for gaming I just don't think I would be able to continue with all the shit going on around me. I play all types of games and have several installed at any one time to play one depending my my mood. For me gaming is a way of life, well, not the whole life, but you know what I mean. No gaming = a very moody BlueMak. And nobody is better with that.

Re: How many people still game?
cow will come on in a minute and tell you just how much of a gamer I was, I think, if I'm not gaming anyone can become a non-gamer as well.
I like thinking too much, it's fun ![]() Also, if you remember, my last gaming rig which I put together sometime last year set me back $4000 initially, it had a 4870X2 and all, and my secondary emergency rig had an AMD tri-core processor and a GTX260 so it wasn't for a lack of processing power that I fell out of it, that's for sure.

Re: How many people still game?
I consider myself a hardcore gamer. Even with a wife and kid. But in the last year I've been thoroughly disappointed with the market. I've played Fallout 3, ME2, and logged some hours on oldies like System Shock 2 and Rollercoaster Tycoon 3. Nothing new has grabbed me, and I'm left unfulfilled by what I have played.
With the HUGE amount of time on my hands, unfilled by gaming, I've taken to system building and modding. I'll tell ya what, gaming is far, far cheaper. |

Re: How many people still game?
Lol, you can say that again, I did the very same thing. Wasn't long before I was flat broke and sick and tired of the whole affair. To me all new games look recycled and the same as older games that came before them, I never was one to be able to play a game again once I had completed it so turning to older games that I liked never helped either. Maybe years from now when the landscape has changed I'll try my hand at gaming again, but for now to me the market looks just like you said Earthmonger, as pale as dishwater. I don't know how other gamers manage.
I played all kinds of games as well when I still gamed and would only buy a game when I was sure I would like it. But unfortunately this formula doesn't work anymore when all games start to look the same. I mostly just surf the net and hang out with friends on the weekends with my free time these days and strangely enough I don't feel like I'm missing anything.

Re: How many people still game?
I still game, and have done so quite vigorously for the past month or so. I forbade myself video games last semester and it produced some wonderful results, but I definitely missed the satisfaction that quick fragging session gives. I've been overindulging in all sorts of gaming after finishing the semester/passing the qualifying exams, and am now halfway through the summer and I find myself ready to look at the books once more. I don't know if I ever will quit gaming entirely, as it is somewhat medicinal, but I am starting to see how there might not be as much time to be allocated to it in the near future. Sooner or later I'll have to focus on the accumulation of knowledge full time, and gaming/computers will become somewhat of a rarity.

Re: How many people still game?
Been there, done that.
Went from playing games all the time anytime to stopping for a while and I remember that feeling of being free from the hype and constant anticipation of the next big thing. Slowly but surely I've been drawn back. For me it was the allure of High Definition gaming on the big screen which made it feel more like a movie rather than being addicted to long, obsessive gaming stretches on the PC. That means I mostly play console games but lately I've been turning my PC into a high end console so I can enjoy the sit on the couch feeling without the caffeine induced, 12 hour gaming, ass in your computer chair, eye straining gaming I used to love on the PC.

Re: How many people still game?
I haven't really considered gaming on a console but your testimony has convinced me. What would you recommend, a Sony PS3 or a Microsoft X-Box? I'm leaning towards the PS3 now because of Blu-Ray movies, but which has the better games?

Re: How many people still game?
Depends, how many people do you know who already own one of the two, if you already know more people who are online with one, go for that one. Unless you're not going to do any online play, then in that case I'd say go with the Playstation 3, if you're not completely satisfied with it in the long run and don't already own a Blu-Ray player you can use it as one. Hope that answers your question.

Okay that's several points for the PS3, most of my friends already have them plus I don't think I like the idea of paying for my online time like you have to with the Xbox.

Re: How many people still game?
As long as there are video games, there will be gamers. And, as long as there are gamers, there will I be.
![]() I used to watch a LOT of TV programs. Hardly ever anymore. I also used to read a lot. Nowadays, it's mostly the daily newspaper and keeping up with the news online. What I like about games is the interactive part of being "in" the story. As opposed to passively reading a novel to see how things come out, story-based games appeal to me from the standpoint of feeling that I have a part in HOW the story develops. [Even though I know that most of these stories already have pre-determined endings, it makes no difference as to the feeling of interactively being a part of it.] So, rather than being a "couch potato" and sitting around watching -- what I mostly consider "insidious" TV programming -- I rather choose to be a part of what's happening instead. That could be why RPGs and Adventure games are my favorite genres of games. But, even good FPS games with a good story are compelling, as well. So, at least as this time, I'm a gamer for life. |

Re: How many people still game?
I definitely have to start gaming again, but this time it will be as a console gamer, as because I'm not very good with the controls, I feel there will be a lot to learn and hopefully this will be enough of a make over on gaming for me. Also due to what OmegaRED said.
I'm getting a PS3, whoopee!

Re: How many people still game?
From time to time, there's nothing worth playing out there at the moment imo. I am looking forward to Crysis 2 and Portal 2 and still play the occasional round of BF 2142 (the finest online FPS yet) - I'd better start saving for a GTX460, don't know if my 9600GT will be up to the task of Crysis 2

I find myself forgetting the buttons on 360 and PS3 all the time which can be a little annoying during God of War 3 when you need to hit sequences to kill bosses. PS3 graphics and sound are far more advanced than Xbox due to the Blu-ray storage but that's limited to only their exclusive titles. Anything out on both systems usually it's better to go with the Xbox version. I still can't bring myself to play some of the major PS3 FPS titles such as Resistance and Killzone due to the controls but I'll get there one day. Eventually, you may find yourself pining for the framerates and consoles of PC games and this could bring you back to the fold. The longer you are away from PC gaming the more likely you'll be to come back when you get a glimpse of some amazing new game.

Re: How many people still game?
My gaming has severely tapered off. Fewer and fewer games are made that I like. Everything is too online-centric for my tastes now. I like my single-player games. It seems to me that most game developers have forgotten how to make simple FUN games and they are mostly just tedious and grueling, or just plain boring or have too much blah-blah story now.
Never did like FPS, MMO, or strategy games, which seem to make up the greater percentage of games on PC. At least a decent racing game still comes out every once in a while. And a good platformer like Turrican? Forget it, those kinds of games don't sell anymore, apparently, so they don't make them anymore. I prefer action games, shmups (like Gradius or R-Type), fighting/wrestling games, arcadey type games, action platformers that aren't cutesy, racing games.....games that when I'm playing them make me go Woo-hoo, not just annoy and aggravate me most of the way through like most games do nowadays. I need my action, not fiddling through menus endlessly. Not cutesy crap in my face. Not staring down the barrel of a weapon, blasting anything that moves. I guess I'm just stuck in the past, or I'm experiencing a mid-life crisis and want my youth back, I don't know. But most of my gaming is done on emulators anymore because I feel the games they make now just aren't fun. Most are nothing but the same few tired genres rehashed over and over again. FPS's are the biggest example of that. They just seem like the same game over and over again with different graphics and that's it. So you see, the correct option for me does not exist to vote on in this thread. I'm not DONE with gaming, but I'm not really gung-ho on it anymore either. I only have a PC and DS to game on. I will NOT be buying any of the console systems when I have this PC that's perfectly capable of playing anything they make for the consoles. Oh, but there's the rub, the FUN games only come out for the consoles and they think that EVERYONE who owns a PC wants to play those long, drawn-out and boring menu-ridden games. Well, not all of us do. The X-Box especially was a kick in the groin to all PC owners. Instead of those games coming to the PC, they go to X-Box instead.....and at a premium price. No. Put it on the PC and I'll play it, screw your consoles. I know I have drastically different tastes in games than (apparently) the rest of the world does, so I have no recourse but to just fade away from games. I wanna go back to the 1980's and 90's. Back to when games were FUN. I have outgrown games, I guess. Or maybe they have outgrown me. I don't know..... |

Re: How many people still game?
i some how feel almost the same as you but only once a while i play games and its usually for a short time or sometimes with my friends and i even bought myself a core i7 just to play the latest games but ended up not playing that often.
maybe none of the games are really that interesting for me anymore or maybe its usually the same type of thing but with minor differences i thought i would be a hardcore game for life .... look what ended up to me =) and i have no regrets about it , makes me feel more free , more time to do things |

Yo callandor I will always be a gamer >>> GAMES FOREVER YAHHHHHHHH ... ok sorry
Now that that is out of the way you don't have to be a hardcore gamer to be a gamer so even if you only game once in a while it still means that you are a gamer

No problem , there has been great games this year and still will come more.
If you love free roaming . then you certainly have to pick Red dead redemption . it is by Rockstar too but in the old west. aka GTA with horses.
