Metro 2033
The game is on sale at THQ's online shop for $12.50 Available only in a couple of countries. The key can be used to activate the game on Steam.
EDIT: LOL, it isn't a Metro 2033 specific sale, other games too but I was only interested in this. ![]() Thankfully an American friend got it for me.

And wow I wish I could sell my GPU and have it replaced by a better one.
I am forced to play to lower resolutions due to overheating. Same issue as with...Trine....FFS. WTT: 4870X2 with a DX11 top of the line GPU, anyone?

I had to reduce resolution to 1440x900 and details to LOW to not overheat the GPU after a couple of minutes. 100% fan speed. I wonder if I will have to lower the resolution even more.

I disabled the second gpu on my 4870X2. Temperatures went down 20 or so degrees.
I tried the changes here First thing all PC users should do (cfg tweaks) - Metro 2033 Message Board for PC - GameFAQs I am not 100% sure, but perhaps they help. Performance is good now, 1440x900 highest dx10 settings. I don't know frame rate but it feels very fluid. I am in the 4th or 5th level now. The game is...scary.

I hope the developers of Fallout 4 play this game. The atmosphere is so thick, the artistic design so perfect and the sound mesmerizing.
I had to stop playing when it was getting dark. lol

I enjoyed that game quite a bit, but thought it was a bit too linear. I imagine playing this game right after Call of Pripyat didn't help, as there's significant freedom in that game when it comes to exploration outside the main story line. That being said, the atmosphere of the game is fantastic, and I imagine the book it is based on is quite a stunning read. I can only guess at what the game must look like with a beastly computer setup to play it (my GTS 250 did OK, but I had to leave out a lot of the "zazz"). I wonder if someday I'll be able to replay it with some sort of 3D technology, or maybe something more immersive.

I know I will play the game again at max settings at max resolution and DX11, whenever I manage to upgrade my system. (unknown date)
I do manage to run it at max details dx10 at 1440x900 with the changes I linked to earlier, though I have to disable half my card to not make the rest of the system melt. Even at evening, the game is scary. Worst thing about it the surface. I think this might be the most beautiful game I have ever played.

So you do actually like the game, in a previous thread I was beginning to think the opposite. You actually consider it to be scary? I did like the way it looked, but it wasn't that scary. Maybe my gamma was set to high

Yes I like the game, I don't know what thread you are referring to, but I really really like this game. I just wish I could play it at max resolution and details.

Re: Metro 2033
You can, the 4870X2 was made to run hot, coming from experience owning one, you`re probably worried about your case temps I see, but maybe you should get the Aero aftermarket cooler as you already said you didn`t want to go into using water cooling to keep temps down.
The game is scary? Maybe I should get this game too, the last scary game I played was F.E.A.R. 2 last year, and it wasn`t that scary, just made me a little uncomfortable. And before that it was DOOM 3 years before.

Re: Metro 2033
I can't. The card reaches temps of 108C and starts showing some SERIOUS artifacts, even with the fan at 100% and a room temperature of 24ish (love the A/C).
I refuse to experiment with after market cooling solutions, if something goes wrong I will be left with only my netbook as a computer for a long time till I can afford to buy a new GPU. I rather jump from the balcony than having to use the netbook as a main computer again, ever. Yes it is scary, just make sure you have your monitor calibrated and you don't "cheat" with gamma/brightness etc. I have only played the demo of FEAR2, but this game destroys both FEAR1 and Doom 3.

Re: Metro 2033
I think this is the first FPS in a long long time, if ever, that I LOVE the handgun. At least with the extended barrel. Not just for the power but because it feels right and accurate at more than 2 meters away where in other games it is next to useless.
Trying to hide, going from cover to cover while demons fly over you and a pack of...things run near you...damn this is tense! Loving it!

Having run Metro 2033 on max DX11 settings with tesselation I can definitely say it's the best looking game I've ever seen. The monsters in particular seem to pop out of the screen they are much more detailed than I've seen in other games. Haven't played it much but the game reminds me so much of STALKER if someone told me it was STALKER 3 I'd have believed them.

There are some people dressed like the main character from STALKER in the game. My favourite was the dead one and the joke he made about him.
My favourite weapon so far is still the double shotgun and the handgun. If you don't get cornered and you can avoid their hits, the shotgun is good enough to kick some serious butt. I tried the automatic shotgun and I was not impressed with it.

Re: Metro 2033
I dunno man, the shotgun with the bayonet was pretty useful for me. Is that what you're talking about when you say automatic shotgun? Also I hated everything that used pressurized air.
This game was OK when it comes to scary, they definitely do a good job, but I wouldn't say it's pants-wettingly scary. It wasn't that forced sort of scary you see in the FEAR games (although they can be a bit more gripping due to their engineered nature; the horror chords you heard whenever creepy stuff happened are what amplified that effect). It was just the eerie vibe you got from the environment and the stuff that happened in it that made the game genuinely awesome. The element of you better find a new mask if yours got broken also added some panic to the game for a few minutes (of reloading and those horrible horking noises). By the way, you know you can turn up the intensity of that flashlight right? That reduces the darkness significantly, and will also enable you to see tripwires better. Things will see you a lot better too, as you beam outwards in the dark, but it's OK, it's what you carry all them shotgun shells for. |

I haven't used any pressurized air weapon yet, I think I am almost at the Armoury so it shouldn't take long. I am interested in the weapon that fires bolts/arrows. One thing I don't like so far though is that it seems I can carry only one weapon of each type, apart from knives. Quote:
FEAR was scary the first few levels. As soon as you figure out for good that none of the ghosts etc can really hurt you, but in rare cases near the end, the scary parts of it are more of a distraction. With Metro 2033, the scary things that you can't or can see, can hurt your character. Fast. Quote:

Back in the game and it gets pretty hard further on.
After some more fighting, the revolver shines through as the ultimate weapon lol. Good medium range, low recoil, stealth option, cheap ammo, good stopping power. I find the assault rifles to be too much "noise" for what they do. Just not worth it.

Re: Metro 2033
The pistol did indeed save my post-apocalyptic a$$ several times in that game, especially later in the game. I won't say where or what, but there were many consecutive big fights, and I had no ammo (ran out of the military grade ammo too!) left for anything, except for the pistol. Needless to say I had to get really effective with my headshooting to survive.
Some of the assault rifles though can be very good, provided you adjust your shooting tactics to almost Counterstrike shooting ethics: aim your first shot towards the head, and do quick tiny bursts, no spray and pray beyond arm's length. Of course it helps a lot if you have some sort of aim assisting device strapped to your rifle. |

I am in the level where I have the kid on my back. Holly shit! Not only having lurkers all the time, but the slower responsiveness is killing me, KILLING ME!!!
The double shotgun does good job, although I would have prefered a SPAS 12 or something. And why the fudge can't the kid walk on his own? Too slow to catch up, his problem!

Haha yeah I absolutely hated that kid, I wanted to chuck him into one of the lurker holes, and just hand him a pinless grenade. Fortunately you get rid of the kid eventually, and are thrust into other horrific adventures. I am tempted to replay through the game ... but I don't know if enough time has passed.

There is one thing that I HATE about the game. No extra filters left, plenty of masks around with filters attached, but I can't replace mine with one of them or just take the filters from them. And I die, having a perfectly good mask and filter in my sight but my character incapable of doing the switch....fraking annoying.

Re: Metro 2033
I know what you mean, sometimes you see what looks like perfectly fine filters/masks laying around but it doesn't give you the option to pick them up. After getting really mad at this for the first half of the game I convinced myself that they were damaged from prolonged exposure to the environment and that I didn't want them anyways
.I can't say I died too much due to running out of filters though, as I always kept a paranoid eye on the filter time remaining. I also did a lot of exploration, and many times I'd find some filters near cleverly hidden corpses during my incursions to the surface. What killed me a lot was when the mask broke: run outside, a demon bites my face in half, I die because my mask is effed while running around like mad trying to find a mask and dodging further face biting. |
