MAFIA II - Demo

Available from Steam for PC; XBOX Live! for the 360.

Just played through the 360 version. As awesome as it is, it doesn't compare to a 3x1920x1080 Eyefinity configuration.

Also, the PC version demo has a Benchmark you can run through.

What is everyone waiting for???

I have now played through both the 360 and PC versions.

Frankly, the 360 version just doesn't "do it" for me. I have a very good game LCD and there was TEARING with the 360 version and the IQ just isn't on par with the PC.

But, with the PC version being able to play in a 3x1 Eyefinity setup, I know which version I'll put the cash out for and then likely rent a 360 version for any online MP that might be appealing.

EDIT: Some 3x1 Eyefinity goodness....

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

I tried the benchmark only, I need to get some sleep before trying the demo.
I can't say I am satisfied, at least graphically.

As far as the benchmark results is concerned, I got rank C, with oh I don't remember average, but apart for a split second near the beginning and about 3 seconds near the middle of the fires, the frame rate didn't go under 50ish. According to the benchmark the lowest was 6.8? Perhaps that second I noticed.
I will run it again later.

Two things I didn't like from the benchmark. 1)The models look barely better than the original Mafia. The faces perhaps even more, but the rest of the body, not that different. 2)The textures felt low resolutionish and unimpressive. Where the original Mafia looked amazing on its release, this looks outdated.

Perhaps that's just me or the benchmark. I will know better later.

1920x1200 0xaa 16xAF the rest on highest I think, apart from that physx one.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

@BlueMak: Graphics-wise, I, too, don't see that much to brag about and have been less than impressed after seeing some of the latest trailers.

I don't see that much different than what I saw in Alpha Protocol. And, that game got really panned due to the graphics.

Animations, however, are a lot better compared to AP. But, I still found some problems with character control when trying to go into and out of cover.

Would like to see some other feedback on this.

Well, from my point of view it looks purdy, but I haven't played the original. Won't be getting it though since I just don't like these types of games.

I played Mafia II on my overclocked pentium 4 and a overclocked hd 3650 agp and 2gb of ram @ 200mhz and it's playable. I have for about 15-20 fps on almost medium settings without AA I'll be waiting for the full version

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

The reason why (graphics wise) it doesn't blow you away is because you both don't have Nvidia cards with physics GPUS.

Primarily the reason I still don't go with ATI, amazing particle effects.

Edit: Just noticed everyone who posted in this thread has ATI cards...

Hopefully I can get a video up of the physx in a little bit.

Since when physx affect texture resolution and detail? Or models? Or screenshots from other PCs?

I am sorry, but you can't put blame on the lack of hardware support of physx on ATI cards for the graphics situation in this game.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

Physx doesn't affect graphics. It does look like a console port (just as people feared) but the graphics are sharp and there's AA and good performance which puts it in a different class than GTA IV. I think I'm going to pick up a 8800GT for Physx and move my ATi card to the 2nd PCI-E 8X slot, slightly less performance than 16X but it'll be worth it to enjoy the Mafia 2 Physx goodies.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

It is funny because console fan call it a PC port since the demo wasn't as impressive on consoles, others who believe on conspiracy theories said nvidia paid 2K to make the game look much better on PC. But since it is the same guys who made Mafia I so I think it isn't a console port. maybe it is streamlined and made easier and more accessibble but sure not a console port. It runs on average 52 FPS (physx off) on my pc on max while in GTA IV I struggle to maintain +20 FPS on medium setting eventhough GTA IV is worse graphics wise.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

GTAIV is almost entirely cpu based, overclock your cpu for way more fps. Mafia 2 is definitely a gpu based title and Nvidia gets the win on this one thanks to Physx. Damn you physx!

Btw, what's the very first thing you guys did upon exiting the house? I obviously tried to kill as many civilians as possible with my car (not easy they dodge) or with my gun. Cops really put a hurt on me even if you drive away they nail you in the drivers seat. I also downloaded a crack for unlimited demo time but only played it for a few minutes, will try more this weekend.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

You can't possibly compare the frame rate performance between GTA IV and Mafia II...
GTA IV just obliterates Mafia II in almost every detail. Mafia II doesn't have (compared to GTA IV) that many things, of course it runs faster than GTA IV.

And I don't even like GTA.

(Graphics wise) Encompasses all parts of graphics including Physx.

I'm sorry man but I don't think anyone can prove this game looks better on an ATI card.
Dynamic and persistent particle effects, cloth tearing, fluid and realistic flame effects.

Why not have all of that?

Also I'll put up my framerate comparison from GTA IV and Mafia when I get my replacement HDD in.

And thanks again for posting the vid Comp Ali.

Hmm,
I am not talking about the game looking better on an ATI. I never said that. I am also not talking about special effects. I said it clearly, I am talking about textures and things that physx has nothing to do with.
In that, Mafia II looks old.
And yes, GTA IV is a more complicated and better looking game than Mafia II, I don't know how anyone can say otherwise.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

I just played through the demo and gameplay wise i'm very impressed I also don't get why everyone's complaining about the visuals, To be honest i think they're very smooth, Because they didn't go crazy with AA and HDR-up-the-arse it means that it can run very smoothly and still look pretty good.

I'd rather see models and objects animate very smoothly and very accurately rather than have everything be shiny.

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

I'm surprised this game is pretty heavy for a DX9 based engine. AA sucks because its only 2x (although it looks bad IMO without it on). The console versions look even worse. In 1920x1080 with 2x aa though its not too bad at all.

With clothing physx on the NPCs, it really slows things down (you can move out the files inside the APEX folder that are related to clothing only and leave the effects folder alone so you can get an fps boost when turning on PhysX).

Gameplay wise, its fun enough. I haven't played any of the GTA games (except for GTA2 a long long time ago) so I can't compare directly. It's funny how I could kill a cop then shoot a black guy then holster my gun and watch the black gangs and the cops shoot each other out.

Also, I made the mistake of robbing the gun store with a glass window (so the owner can see that I have my gun draw already), needless to say he shot me dead as I kicked the door open. lol

I found all 5 playboy collectibles! lol

Also I was worried that they had the music/cars wrong (late 50s music) but I read that the demo is set in the 50s but the game's story itself starts in 1945.

I have to add that I LOVE how the cut scenes actually match the mouth. lol I hate games with kung-fu movie-style dubbing for cut scenes. lol

Re: MAFIA II - Demo

Agree , AA doesn't work in this demo. I have to say I am impressed. Physx on mid and the framerates are great. will try high later . there are some bugs beside the in game animation needs more work but the physx effects are awesome when turned on. Like nvidia said, this is the heaviest implementation of physx ever.
Good thing I can run physx on medium.
