Capturing HQ Video and Screenshots from the XBOX 360
Ever since I got my own XBOX 360 "S" a couple of months ago, I've been searching for an affordable way to capture game videos and screenshots. Most of the options I came across were very costly. And, some that I thought...and was told...would work -- didn't.
So, to cut to the chase, I came across an affordable [to me] way to do some really HQ video and screen capturing. If you have an extra PCIe x1 (small) slot, the only other item you're going to need is the XBOX 360 HD/AV cable. This cable has a switch that toggles between normal TV mode and HD mode. Using the Red/Blue/Yellow component cables along with the Red and White Audio connections, and the device I'm going to tell you about, you'll be getting some really nice HQ videos and screenshots in no time. AND, if you have FRAPS, you can use that to do the capturing just like you would in any other gaming environment. [EDIT Update about FRAPS: It seems that the better way is to just use the Record option of the AVerTV DVR to record the videos and audio. Whereas FRAPS records to some odd .AVI file that needs re-encoding, the AVerTV DVR records directly to .MPG and eliminates all the extra steps described below.] The device I found is called, AVerTV HD DVR. It's produced by AVerMedia and can be found for under $100 USD at this time. Since many of you use NewEgg, here's a link to the item there. But, be sure to check other sources. For example, MicroCenter presently has it for $87. Newegg.com - AVerMedia AVerTV HD DVR MTVHDDVRR PCI-Express x1 Interface Also, the beauty of this [for me] is that I don't have to do anything special other than to start the software in order to get my 360 up and running on my PC monitor. Then, with FRAPS running, it automatically becomes available for capturing. I'm really pleased with this product and can highly recommend it to anyone interested in doing HQ console video and screen capturing. Just to see how well it works, here's a video I captured a while ago. It's been re-coded from FRAPS using VirtualDUB, then again recoded (to splice two videos together) using Windows Movie Maker 2.6. EDIT: Hmmmm.... here's a direct link: YouTube - Halo Reach It's Beautiful

The sounds is a bit iffy. Why just 480p? Go higher man!

And, as to why only 480? I actually recorded at 760P. And, the recoding was at 760P. Seems to me that YouTube is the one restricting it. And, I'm checking into why the audio is so bad. Keep in mind, I'm deaf. So, this was brought to my attention a few times about the audio. Seems it may be recording through the microphone instead of the Line-In. |

Re: Capturing HQ Video and Screenshots from the XBOX 360
it can take anywhere from 24-72 hours for a video that is available in HD to actuall be processed by youtube for 720p..
There is a ton of echo though... wondering about the audio settings.

But, this device is really sweet to use. It can be used for any video capturing, screenshots, TV content... anything worth capturing. I'll definitely be putting up some more content very, very soon! OK...so, here's the latest video. There's a long pause at the end as I was waiting on my comrades to either show up or to get some direction as to where to go next. BUT, this one IS at 720P and the audio is MUCHO better! OH...and I got in a hurry to use this weapon. Didn't wait for the red reticule to appear. ![]() Let's see if this one will work. Says it's finishing the processing.
