If the 9600 is genuinley better at identical settings, just RMA the card. Evidently, while more powerful, either it's broken or something else in your PC (e.g. PSU) isn't getting on with it. Burn in for videocard: I am presuming he is referring to the likes of Furmark. If not I have no idea what he's on about.

That first paragraph of yours had words in it that I recognized but the meaning of it eludes me
![]() Furmark thanks for the tip - I'll give it a try. You see the problem is I have a feeling that a stress test won't show a problem. |

Re: Slight Crysis
Furmark might show if there is a defect with the card.
Having said that...it lookw like the card is fine. Why? You said you get higher frame rate from the 460, it is just more varied, from 24-50. That doesn't sound like abnormal to me unless the drop of frame is erratic and happens no matter what is going on the screen. (busy or not) Have you tried (with the 460) to enable Vsync or if it is already enabled, to disable it. Both could solve the issue.

Re: Slight Crysis
I've tried with vysnc on and off it doesn't affect the issue.
YouTube - Crysis 9600 YouTube - Crysis 460 Here are the videos I mentioned. I used my smartphone camera so the quality isn't the best and it's low fps masks the problem to some degree but you can still see the 460 stuttering. The most obvious one is right at the start of the video when Prophet vapourises Jester and Nomad looks back to the body. There's that slight pause. I think I'm pretty much screwed. The issue won't manifest in a stress test. Probably an incompatibility with drivers or bioses somewhere but who knows where! |

Re: Slight Crysis
Both times the game runs at the same resolution and graphics details?
After you place the 460 in, do you install the graphics drivers again or not? It is important that you do after you install it. Don't rely on the previous installation. Other than that, I can't clearly see a problem. There seems to be some stuttering at the time the body evaporates, but it doesn't feel like a GPU issue.

Re: Slight Crysis
Jac, do you have a second hard drive in your system? If so, I highly recommend that you move your Pagefile to the second hard drive and disable the one on your main system drive. This problem you're having "may" be related to the system having to use the pagefile. Even if not, it's still highly advisable to put the pagefile on the non-system drive.
Rather than post all the steps here, just check out this link if you're not already familiar with how to do this. Although this says "vista" it's the same for W7: Move and Optimize Windows Vista’s Paging File — MAXIMUMpcguides – Windows Vista tips, tricks, help, and how-to guides |

Re: Slight Crysis
I know it's not easy to see in the videos but this is for the reasons I explained. If you were sat at my system you would know exactly what I was talking about - I'm not making this up.
Yes I did a clean install of the graphics drivers 260 when I swapped out the cards. One of the first things I tried was moving the game install to my secondary hard drive incase reads were interfering with the pagefile. This is definitely a GPU issue. Simply put the 460 stutters whilst the 9600 doesn't. Thanks for your advice - I have moved these discussions to the Nvidia forums and raised an issue with Palit and Nvidia. I would people be wary if thinking about getting a 400 series card as it seems many people are having similar issues. You may end up with a card that doesn't work as well as you'd like but that you cannot RMA. |

Re: Slight Crysis
If it is a broad issue then I Guess there might be something wrong with the drivers or of course the actual card (unheard of for Nvidia cards...lol) Sorry.

Re: Slight Crysis
I do see the issue in those youtube videos. It's quite bizarre.
I'd agree with the pagefile reccomendation - remember that a GPU with more onboard memory puts more strain on your system memory. It'd also be interesting to see some vids from other demanding games to see if the same issue is there or slightly different. BlueMak - I've never had an issue with an Nvidia card or driver that wasn't my fault, hence my slight disbelief earlier in this thread :P I guess to some extent it comes down to board partners and, of course, pot luck though. And, obviously, I have no experience with GTX460s

Re: Slight Crysis
I don't believe simply moving/installing the game to a secondary drive does anything about the system using the pagefile if that is still on the system drive. I'd at least try it the way it would have been done if the game was installed on the system drive.
I know many people will install applications/games on a secondary drive for storage reasons. But, Windows will still be using the system drive for the bulk of its operations. Again, whether this actually has any affect on the performance of Crysis, remains to be seen. And, if you're using W7, it might even help to boost your RAM to 4 GBs from the 3 listed in your specs. And, what Latency settings are you using for the RAM? AND, one more thing: If you've done some clean Windows installs, be sure to check for Motherboard/BIOS updates. Although your system is a bit long in the tooth, there still could be some system drivers needing to be updated. Good luck! |

Re: Slight Crysis
I tested with some more games.
Metro 2033 at 1360x768, Very high settings, AAA, 4xAF. Tesselation, NO DOF, Performance seemed quite good although I didn't have a frame counter. There was some stuttering & screen tearing was really bad but I hadn't enabled Vsync in Nvidia CPL. I tried BF2142 at 1980x1020, 32x AA, Transparancy AA, Vsync, all maxed and that was smooth as you might expect. FPS was steady at 60fps. The fan makes an almighty racket when it spins up though. Like I've got a gas turbine installed in my system. |

Re: Slight Crysis
I notcied something curious today. More tinkering with Crysis and whilst the game was running I wanted to test system temps so I alt-enter'd out of the game and noticed that the stuttering went away when playing the game windowed.

Re: Slight Crysis
i think crysis is the most hardware demanding game next to GTA IV, try reinstalling the game in a different installation directory

Re: Slight Crysis
you should try Metro 2033. Crysis is the New Zealand Story next to it.

Re: Slight Crysis
With the release of the 266 betas the other day I tried Crysis again.
I tested the Recovery level from the beginning like in the videos I produced. The cutscenes still seem to stutter - with that jarring pause as Nomad looks at Jester being disintegrated. However the actual play seems much smoother. I've only played through the recovery level for a few minutes so I cant say it's a total fix but a definite improvement. |
