RPG Discussion
Well...I discovered over the holidays that Steam has a lot of very cheap good games, so I've plunged myself back into my favorite genre of games: RPGs. I managed to pick up Oblivion+Shivering Isles for $17 and Dragon Age: Origins & Awakening for another $22. I had already beat Oblivion/Shiv on 360 (bad, I know, but I got 1000/1000 achievement points for that game), and am currently halfway through DA:O.
I'm looking to pick up Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2. Anyone else have some recommendations for RPGs / any input? |

Re: RPG Discussion
Drakensang, Risen, Divinity II (with the expansion pack), Two Worlds 2 (and one if you don't have it), Fallout 3 and New Vegas. I finally finished Fallout 3 yesterday (or was it the day before?) and it is very good though it could have been much better.
You can get some of the older ones from gog.com There is also Alpha Protocol, which is more third person shooter, but the engine inside it is pure RPG.

What does this do?

Re: RPG Discussion
Oblivion is incredibly hard to match imo.
I tried to play New Vegas but somehow it entirely failed to captivate me. The combat system I find contrived and awkward, and the environments I find depressing, but both of those criticisms are very subjective of course. I don't have time for gaming outside of holidays much, but one thing I will be sure to pick up is coming out on 11/11/11, and I'm sure you know what that is :P

The Witcher 2 looks promising as well.

I CAN'T WAIT FOR SKYRIM /fanboy over
Oblivion was a piece of art, imho. I got it the day it came out -- unfortunately the store ran out of PC, so I picked it up for 360. Could've been worse. Oh well. I'm looking at Fallout 3, but it looks just like a rehashed Oblivion to me (same UI and engine, silly Bethesda). NV looks promising though -- it's made by iD software, I think, the original makers of Fallout (unless I'm mistaken). And if you guys haven't picked up Dragon Age Origins, do it. It's a bit of a hassle to get set up with EA registration, but it's really worth it -- didn't win so many GOTY awards for no reason

Re: RPG Discussion
New Vegas was made by 'Obsidian Entertainment', which was founded by ex Black Isle members once this one closed. Some of the key people that made Fallout left earlier to start 'Troika Games', after disagreements with the publisher (Interplay), though.
I don't know how good Skyrim will be, what with the lack of information, but at least they are using a new engine. The last one was looking dated already. I find Bioware's games as of late to be mostly about the voice acting, I don't like the gameplay, storylines nor UI all that much. DA 2 shaping up to become a bit better than its predecessor, or so it would seem from the trailers I have seen. Just too bad it's expected to be a shorter game. |

Re: RPG Discussion
I see The Witcher 2 mentioned, but, why not the original? I'd definitely recommend that so you can get acquainted with The Witcher world prior to the release of the sequel.

Re: RPG Discussion
May look into picking that up at some point.
And yes, Obsidian, how silly of me **smacks head**. And I don't know. Bethesda hasn't shipped a bad game in recent memory, and I have faith in the TES series. As for DA2...very excited. Haven't finished DA:O, but honestly, I'm rushing to make it in time. The soundtrack is amazing, graphics are decent, combat is innovative/nice (rts/rpg mix). I think they overdid the voice acting and undercut the graphics/animations a bit, but given what it is, it's very very very good.

Re: RPG Discussion
Anyone following Rift or Star Wars: The Old Republic? Both look to be good -- I'll probably end up preordering both, when they're available.
