What ever happened to the combat flightsim genre?

One of my friends asked for a combat flight sim recommendation so I went to take a look... and outside of HAWX (which seemed to be less than good) I couldn't find one that didn't date back to like the 90s.

What happened to this genre?

Re: What ever happened to the combat flightsim genre?

HAWX is not a flight military sim. Not even close.

The genre has all but disappeared. There are 1-2 WW2 and WW1 themed games, I think 1 helicopter one and most people still play classics like Falcon 4.0 with mods and other old games.

The only game with modern planes that is contantly updated and expanded with sequels and expansion packs is the, well, more than one game, the series of games from Third Wire Productions - Home
Great games too.

Still, it is sad how from having several games every year we only have them (in number).

Re: What ever happened to the combat flightsim genre?

IL-2 1946 is really the only Combat Flight Sim worth getting right now. The original IL2 Sturmovik is about 10 years old, but it's been updated a number of times, and there is also a large MODDING community that have breathed new life into the game.

You can find it pretty cheap, around $10.00 in the US, and it's worth every penny.

IL-2 Sturmovik: Cliffs of Dover is due to be released VERY soon (sometime in March), and it's using a new game engine. It's going to need a fairly hefty system to run it with any kinda of quality settings for resolution and/or image quality.

I've played IL2 1946 for a number of years, and it's a very good sim. I'm not as hyped about ClOD as a lot of guys because it's just based on the Battle of Briton, , so it's a limited theater of operations, and will have a pretty limited early war plane set. I'm more interested in the late war planes, and am very fond of carrier operations which ClOD will not have.

Hey, it's always good when that stops happening!

Combat flightsims and flightsims in general can be boring, it's no surprise the genre disappeared.

very good question, many simulator games which came up in the 90s are gone now. I remember flight sim, I could get it started fly and then have a sweet ass crash landing . that was in the late 90s when I was in junior high school
