Call of Juarez: The Cartel
Having enjoyed the first two "CoJ" games, I'm not sure whether I'm more curious than interested in this one. But, it does present some rather new twists by bringing an old western flavor to a modern setting. Might could see Chuck Norris in that lead role....

Great. I don't know how the modern times will make this look like, but it's promising.

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
I finally got around to picking this game up this evening (although for my XBOX 360).
I've only completed the first mission and playing as "Ben", the LAPD guy that would probably be well-played by a younger Chuck Norris. As the game story progresses, I'll report back as to just what kind of personal rating I would give the game. But, so far, the game looks very nice on my 1080p monitor. |

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
I haven't read many positive comments about this game. Most say the game is at its best below average.
Interested to see how you like it.

So far, there's plenty of action involved. There's a "Concentrate" mode that can be activated that carries over from the original games and is similar to Bullet Time. This gets built up as you kill enemies. I'm finding that I don't use it much at all, though. However, during episodes where the entire team storms a room, it gets activated automatically and give you several seconds to target multiple enemies in very slow motion. It comes in handy for that. The Mature rating is very well earned. Very strong language and some nudity, too. A few screenshots: ![]() ![]() ![]()

The textures look ok, not sure about the lighting and shadows.

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
FWIW, this game uses the Chrome5 Engine. And, due to me getting it for the 360 it's limited to DX 9.1.

Same engine as Dead Island? Interesting.

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
After a few nights of playing two or three missions each session, I can say I'm quite enjoying the game. It's not perfect, but, at the discount price I paid for it, I'm very pleased to say I feel I'm getting my money's worth.
There's a decent story/plot development that keeps my interest and I find I don't really want to stop playing. But, I've pretty much purposely decided to budget my gaming time in order to devote time to other things when I get home and before heading off to bed. So, if you can find the game at a discount, AND, if you had any positive opinion of the first two in the series, I think you'll enjoy this one...in spite, if not because of...the shift to modern western environments. And, not to give anything away, but, if you do get the game, be ready for action right out of the box.... |

I tend to take his comments seriously, even when I don't agree with him.
And he doesn't like the game.

Don't have any idea who "he" is and the video doesn't help me at all as "his" comments aren't captioned for me.

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
Oh yes, I forgot about that. He is a reviewer. The video is from a co-op play he did. He bashes the game for being a bad and boring game. He and the others, laugh with what they see as bugs and poor design. He doesn't like the game.
His reviews are usually spot on for at least using facts and not distorting anything to fit his view so even though I don't agree with his view on games, I respect him for that. That's why I didn't even consider trying the game.

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
I'm at least 3/4 of the way through this game and wondering just why it got such lousy reviews. The only thing that comes to my mind is that maybe the reviewers were taking the game too seriously. There's a LOT in the game that seems to be presented "over the top" and with "tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek".
So far, about the only real complaint I would have is that, like so many other games where you have companion AI, they tend to get in the way too much. This is only a problem during some of the fire-fights. But, I don't notice it anymore than what I did in other games where they use similar AI situations. And, the dialogue that goes on between them during these fire-fights can be down right hilarious. Example: If my character is doing an excellent job of taking out a host of enemies, one of my companions might say, "Hey, you don't have to do this all by yourself." Or, "Hey, save some for us!" And, if I'm not holding up my end of the battle, they might ask if I've ever practiced with that weapon, or, "How about trying to aim?" There are plenty of car chase scenes, too, where you have to chase down someone while being shot at from all sides. And, even one scene I just completed where you have to try to outrun a train in order to get to your target who made it across the tracks before the train came through. I guess it's true, that "one man's junk is another man's treasure" even when it comes to video games.

Re: Call of Juarez: The Cartel
The voice acting is just terrible in this game. As I'm playing, especially in battle scenes I'm always yelling STFU! Actors must have been paid minimum wage. Wish there was a way to edit out certain repetitive dialog like when shooting at someone, one shot somebody says how good a shot you are and then the very next shot how bad you suck. This repeats over and over again at every shoot out and it's really annoying.
