Dungeon Siege III

I still have a copy of the original Dungeon Siege that my older son talked me into playing several years ago. Although I finished that game, it was one of the most frustrating games I had ever played up to that time. I swore I would never touch another D/S game, EVER!

My main complaint is that I like to do some exploring in these games and, with D/S, exploring was an afterthought. The whole game consisted of combat, move 5 steps, combat, move 5 steps, more combat, move 5 steps....ad inifinitum.

I loved the games, Baldur's Gate, NWN, and games like that, and, I thought, mistakenly, that D/S was this type of game. Big mistake!

Anyway, I downloaded the demo for D/S III last night and played it through. I think I'm hooked!!!

There's plenty of combat -- as well as looting to be done. And, it seems there's a pretty good story to go with it all.

If anyone has the full game, please post your opinion of it. I may just be getting this game very soon to see if the rest of it is as fun/interesting as what I found in the demo.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I enjoyed Dungeon Siege 1 very much, I thought it played and looked very good at the time. Although extremely linear, it felt very good and very realistic I guess, with the beautiful vistas.
My main issue then was the whole trading aspect with the game, where you had to walk a serious large amount of distance to trade and there were very few traders. I have no idea how this is handled in Dungeon Siege III. I hope they did something to change that.

I played the PC demo and I am going to try the PS3 demo today. The one thing I didn't like was the camera. With just two of them, none of them felt just right.
If, playing the PS3 demo, see that I can tolerate it, I think I am going to order it tonight. I found it for 14 euros which is great price.

I know that overall the game is going to be great, this is Obsidian we are talking about, and for the second time (after A.P.) it is bug lite. So I will probably have it some time next week and let you know then.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I just tried the demo on the PS3. I have to say the game feels great on it. Graphics wise the version is not as...crisp as the PC version, but not enough to matters to me.
Also, did you see Katarina? DAMN!

So....I am ordering it and if you want to wait till the end of next week (the game should be here by Thursday at the latest), do.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

The only real "gripe" I would have -- after playing the demo -- is that I don't like the camera views available. I did zoom out and the angle is too straight overhead. I'd prefer a more over the shoulder view. Hopefully, a mod or patch can make that happen. But, that's really the only thing I found that I would put in the negative side of this game.

Here's one review and this guy, too, complained about the camera....

Re: Dungeon Siege III

Playing the demo through the PS3, the camera feels less in the way. I am not sure why that is. After the first 5 minutes I was used to it. While I agree it is the major issue the game has (from the demo at least), I don't find it problematic enough any more to not get this game.

I haven't played the PC demo with the mouse IIRC, and I don't know how it is with that. While I guess the viewing distances and angles are the same, the way you can easily manually adjust the view with the right stick (PS3 controller), makes it ok.

Eagerly waiting for the game to arrive.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I just recently got dungeon siege 3 for pc. I don't know what they did with the conversion from platform or what have you, but it is a pretty rough game controller wise. The camera is tough to control and keep facing the correct way. When attacking, if you do not properly aim your character at the enemies they will just keep attacking forward. Also, wasn't sure how I felt about the upgrading and abilities in the game. I feel there was more to be desired there. Other than that, I feel the graphics are very nice, the amount of loot there is to find is amazing and plenty of quests and exploring to take part in.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I kind of liked, like a lot, the way the camera slowly rotates to where you are walking/running to, make it less necessary for me to rotate the camera. My only issue is with the distance of the camera when used from the high position. It just doesn't feel it goes high enough, and the close camera I feel uncomfortable considering the large number of enemies you can face. If they could move the camera in the high position just a bit higher or lower AND back so that you could see a bit further ahead, it would be perfect for me. Still, the PS3 demo I found great (though visually trailing a bit behind the PC version) and I am waiting for it. Hopefully this week it will be here.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I think that was my problem with the camera to. When you are trying to be a character that uses a range shot, it's hard to get the max distance your weapon can allot you. The enemies run right up to you before you can take a shot. Remember, this is purely PC.

I see, I guess being a ranged character could be a bigger problem with that. Well...ok then.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

When I played the demo, I chose to play the female character. I don't usually do that but wanted to do something different from my "tried and true" formula.

As stated, the camera is my biggest gripe about the demo on the 360. Since the game has only been out for -- what? two months now? -- maybe a patch can fix the camera angle. I see the problem mostly with the angle and not so much with the distance over the character. I just want to be able to see further ahead. I don't really recall a problem so much with focusing on targets.

Awaiting some opinions from those I trust.

The game (together with 2 more ) is "here". And by that I mean the local post office. I will have to wait till Monday or Tuesday to go there.

Still, I think that if you find the game at a good price, go for it. You already like the game, and a camera is something that one can get used to over time. A bad game no.

I'm eager to know what you think. BUT, with the release of Deus Ex: Human Revolution due in just 9 days, I know which one I'm going to be picking up.

I loved the first one (Deus Ex) but I will wait for reviews and time before I get it, if it is good. I have no urge to get it soon.

Have you ever played, Project: Snowblind? It was originally developed as a sequel to Invisible War. But, due to the poor response to IW, the devs and publisher decided to release it without the connection to the Deus Ex series. It actually is a decent game in and by itself. My son gave it to me for a birthday or Christmas gift. (Cant' remember which and it doesn't really matter since my birthday IS on Christmas ) I've played it through more than once. If you can get it, it should be a decent bargain by now.

I rarely ever buy games on day-of-release. I'm really very stingy with my money when it comes to games and I tend to wait for the price drops and/or the good initial discounts at some retailers. But, with Human Revolution, it just looks so good I intend to grab it on release.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I haven't. At least from what I can remember. From what I read it is a short game, mainly focused on multiplayer. For also being an older game, I might get it when it is on sale on Steam. Ten euros are a bit too high for my taste.

Regarding DS3, I just remembered that tomorrow, the 15th of August, is a holiday here, almost everything is closed. Including the post office, so....F.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I just installed it last night, I am going to play today.

Things I Can say so far, it downloaded a patch (wasn't aware there was one and I have no idea what it does), it installed and the menu looks good as always. Good piece of music...

More later.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I just started playing and, I Don't know if it is my imagination or not, but the view distance/camera, feels much better. MUCH better.

Also, for those who didn't like the auto turning camera, there is an option to turn it off.

Here is a poor photo I just took
to see for yourself the angle/distance. This is of course with the far away camera and not the near the body camera.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I will start a new game. I got the "flamewoman/beast" and its secondary attack is range attack. I am not into that at all.

Otherwise, its good. I can't fault the game. Just don't expect a true RPG. It's Dungeon Siege to the heart.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

The game is harder than it looks. Unless one is playing on the easiest setting, just button smashing will not do. You actually have to think and react, manually dodge and block etc. It's not an easy game. I like it.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I just picked up the latest copy of PC Format magazine. I generally concur with their ratings for the games I've played and the ones they've reviewed. That said, they gave this game a 62/100 rating and somewhat indicated it's a forgettable experience.

I did see an AD in Fry's for it presently at $34.99 USD for the 360.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

For me it is simple. If one enjoys Dungeon Siege 1-2 (or I guess Space Siege), this is a must. If one wants a hack and slash "dungeon crawler" with RPG elements, yeah get it. If one wants a deep RPG experience similar to say Arcanum, Planescape Torment, don't get it, at least not yet.
For me it is what I wanted.
But I have to say it again, the game's battles are not easy. You need to think and think fast. Just by pressing Attack is not going to win you the game.

Re: Dungeon Siege III

I own the full game, but I can't say I can provide a solid opinion on it as I haven't played all that much into the story. So far though, the hack and slash gameplay is nice, the loot and character progression is decent, but the one thing that kills me is the camera control. Only two levels of zoom: zoomed in and out. The camera is also moved RTS style, i.e. move to edges of map to turn the map. Slightly annoying. Luckily, you can set hotkeys to turn the camera. Overall, it's a solid buy, but I recommend that whatever you do, don't buy it for $50.

If you pick it up from g2play or ultimatum games, you can get it for <$25, which I think is a reasonable price for this game.
