Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
I am NEVER buying anything on sale again on Steam unless it's on their front f'ing page. Seriously, I've been burned twice now by them in the last year, and I've just about had it.
What pisses me off is that they put up a multiple day sale, like the current one, list a bunch of select games for sale for that day as well as list links to other companies that have games that are also obviously on sale, you find a game in that list, then you think, "Hey, such and such game is on sale for 50% off... great.", and you jump on it. Tomorrow could turn around, and it's not on sale anymore, so who wouldn't? However the next day Valve has that same game as a daily selected game, but now it's at 75% off. How the hell am I supposed to think and feel? Angry as hell, that's what. In my case, I picked up the last 2 expansions I was missing for Fallout: New Vegas which were on sale for $4.99 each, 50% off. That was yesterday. Today, they are on sale for 75% off, $2.99 each. WTF!?! Seriously Valve, if you intend to have that game and it's expansions or DLC on sale for a daily selected deal do not have it on sale AT ALL until that time. Then, after that day, have it on sale at a lower, but obviously not the same insane discount as before (for instance today Orcs Must Die which is at 50% off where yesterday it was 75%). DO NOT do it the other way around. I can't stress how angry I am as I feel robbed, or at least angry that I wasted money I could have spent on another title like Two Worlds II or LA Noire, both of which are on sale even cheaper today (2 more examples of how screwed up this is). People might think it's a pitiful amount to get angry over but not to me. Every dime counts, and I spend it wisely.. or at least I thought I was. So please, Valve, stop this garbage already.

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
I'd leave the topic where it is.
![]() From what I've noticed during these Steam sales that last several days, if a game is on discount, but not the daily special, it stays on discount for the whole duration of the sale (and there is also the message next to the Buy Now button saying for how long the offer will stand, in this case "AUTUMN SALE! Offer ends 28 November"). So, if you're penny pinching like me, the tactics is to be patient and wait until that title is a daily special to get the maximum discount or, if that doesn't happen, buy it on the last day of the sale.

You should try what I do. Do not buy a game unless it's on the daily deal page. Then on the last day of the sales, if the game you want hasn't appeared on the list/page, then and only then buy it at the regular sale price.
As to when it ends, if you open the page of each game on sale it gives a date...

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
Why doesn't Steam do like most of any of the retails shops I use: If you buy something and, within [usually] 30 days, if you find it at a lower price, even if THEY have lowered the price, you can get a refund on the difference?
I'm still not that keen on doing my game shopping online although I have gotten a few. But, I, too, would have an issue and be quite upset if I couldn't opt for the difference between what I paid and any discount within a 30 day period of time. |

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
typically steam is already 25% or more cheaper than the retail store to begin with....
i'd be stoked with 50% off steams already low price... and even more so if it hit 75%..... i'm in not way going to complain about 2 bucks or 10 bucks if i'm already getting a pretty significant discount..

Perhaps in Canada or USA, but here and most of Eurozone new Steam releases are at 49.99 euros. Same game bought in a box is anything from 30 to 50 percent cheaper.

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
Let's wait another day, maybe they will make it 100% off
But seriously, it's a type of psychological warfare. It's a good deal anyway, -50%.Usually they go the other way around, something that was before -75%, will be -50% or less the next day. Us, europeans, get screwed on a regular basis, what costs $4,99 for you, costs 4.99 Euro for us. That's a +30% on all titles at all times. Take this as a consolation prize.

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
I just don't like the tactic. It shows what a digital vendor who never sees their customer gets away with vs a retail vendor who deals with consumers face to face. In a retail environment if 2 people in line buy the same game, yet the 2nd person gets a better deal while that first person is still standing there... if I was that first person I would return the game, or ask to be reimbursed for the difference. And I'd get it too in most if not all cases. With a digital vendor, all you can do is close your eyes, and imagine the middle finger they're holding up.
I get that it's "a daily deal", a "bigger deal" on top of an already good deal that only lasts 1 day, I just don't like the way they handle it. |

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
if it's the sale line, same day then I'd agree Tipstaff.
But in your case you were happy to buy it with 50% off. You made the purchase. The next day they offer it for 75% off. It would be the same as going into a store and seeing a TV for 299,- You think, great deal, I'll take it. You buy the tv and carry it out of the store and on the way home you see the same TV somewhere for 249,- I know you feel like you've been robbed, but you weren't, really. You, at that time, felt it was a good idea to spend 299 on that particular TV. That it's cheaper the next day or somewhere else doesnt matter, as you were happy to part with that particular amount of money at the time of purchase. Of course, you can email Valve and ask for reinbursment of the difference. It's the way of the world.

I only have a problem with their jacked up standard prices. Well, apart from the Steam client itself of course.

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
I wouldn't complain. It normally is full price, so you still got it as a steal. NewEgg does this too (kind of) -- they had a CyberMonday promotion where you got $20 off the entire store through GoogleOffers, but I purchased a new laptop HDD for $50 the day before...and it's my fault (ah well).
Don't hate Steam because they gave you 50% off, hate yourself for not waiting until the last day to check

At least you don't have to work around region locks, but then again that might not be their doing.

Re: Kiss my @$$ Valve! Steam sale pricing tactics are horrible!
A tip for the current sale: don't buy anything that's not a daily deal. All publisher catalogue discounts can get lower for daily deals. Wait until the end to see if what you want is on a daily sale. And check GamersGate for some great deals. (Sorry, couldn't help adding that, just bought some stuff there.)

To be fair, it's a 2 buck difference...
At least it wasn't a 200$ item down to 5$ ... 30-day price guarantee anyone?? |
