Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

So, having just recieved my copy yesterday here are my initial experiences.

1st. I got the game for £20 new on eBay. It arrived all fine and sealed. My serial code however has a '?' as the last digit! I've never seen that before. I tried entering a '?' into the code field but it would only accept numbers. I thought it might be a misprint so I just entered a '7' and it accepted it. Strange

First play I had some terrible stuttering in the cutscenes. I had set the affinity for the game to 2 cores as I had read that it doesn't use a Quad efficiently. I tried again with all cores available to the game and it ran the cutscenes much more smoothly. Looking at task manager it appears that all cores are running at about 80% during play.

I had the graphics running at full hd with FXAA set to medium and everything up high. DX11 off and Physx at 'normal'. Frame rate can vary anywhere from 60 to 25 ish FPS. The game does suffer from pauses and stutters though.

I am running this on Windows 8 DP and the game seems to work as should apart from it doesn't save progress after a restart. The game just starts from the very beginning every time. I think this is something to do with GFWL. Is there a way to just ignore GFWL, play it offline or such?

Re: Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

You do need to be signed in (along with the cd key) to GFWL this is required for the game saves...i don't know of any other way around this as i haveNever looked into it so im not sure.

How ever i did find that one or two of the boss fights i found impossible to beat with the mouse/keyboard,so i had to switch to my x360 controller...

Re: Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

Sounds like someone's selling packages meant to be discarded on the side off eBay, but as long as it worked for you.

GFWL has an option to create an offline profile for saves if that's the problem, but the game ought to warn if it has nowhere to save under GFWL. Otherwise it might just be a Windows 8 pre-beta thing. Try downloading/updating GFWL separately just in case.

Re: Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

There is a leak of the patch on peer networks and they state that you have to play in offline mode for it to work. I don't know how you would go about that though. I just read somewhere else that the DX11 patch has been delayed due to the need for it to be verified by GFWL.

Holy fek I hate these pointless layers that publishers feel the need to enforce on anyone who wants to play a video game.

One question, does the game launch GFWL when you start it? Mine doesn't and if I launch it myself and sign in I still don't get game saves.

Re: Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

I tried the steps listed in this post to get GFWL working.

Afer installGames for Windows Marketplace client, get error windows component is disabled

I copied the specified files to \program files(x86)\... then uninstalled GFWL like the guy stated. Restarted. Re-installed GFWL and attempted to run Windows Update but it found nothing to install other than some visual basic updates.

I ran the GFWL marketplace prog but it still didn't appear to log me in. Tried Batman again but no joy. So I ran the benchmark just to see what scores I was getting.

Closed the game, thought I'd try putting the files in that guys pack into the \program files\\... folder. Re ran the game. Same issue. Tried the benchmark in DX11 this time.

Closed the game again. Moved the leaked DX11 patch files to the game folder. Ran the game again and success - GFWL overlay popped up and I could access my profile. This is strange because the patch isn't supposed to work with GFWL.

Played some of the game and got my cheives and saves etc so it appears that the game is now working properly. Not sure if that guys suggestions or the patch caused this.

Performance wise it's not fabulous but I guess I am asking too much of my GTX460 to run with DX11, Physx and at 1080p. They should allow you to turn of the MVSS & HBAO DX11 features as they add practically nothing whereas tessellation is worthwhile.

Re: Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

Just finished the main story arc after not being able to play for awhile due to computer issues.

Full HD and DX9 the game does look very good. Would have liked to turn on tessellation but my PC was not quite up to it. The character models for Batman, Catwoman and Joker are excellent. Voice acting is superb and the environments are good as well. The Victorian styled Wonder City and the Art Nouveau Subway station. I love the interaction and tales that you can overhear from the AI thugs in the City and the fact that they respond to major events if you continue playing after the main story has completed.

"Hey, there's a man down over here. Get over here"
"Screw you buddy, it's every man for himself!"

9.5/10

Re: Batman : Arkham City Owner's Thread

I bought this game on Black Friday through Origin and I want to strangle someone each and every time I go to play it. The first time I played it without a GFWL account so when the patch came out I had to login to get updated and that made all my save games unusable, then when I got a new hard drive and started on a fresh install it wouldn't use my previous saves (I followed all the import procedures) so I've had to keep playing the same parts of the game over and over. Even the GFWL patching is screwed I must have tried it 6 times total before it worked. DX11 performance is still uneven so I've been playing DX9; this is the first time I've been put off playing a game due to all the issues that make getting into it such a hassle.

Maybe once I've had some trouble free gaming I'll chime in on AC but until then it would only color my opinion. I'm tempted to wait it out until DX11 is working properly right now I'm playing DX9 with FXAA+MSAA 8X but the eye candy is definitely lacking.
