Random Gaming Screenshots
I just played this battle and it was one of the best battles ever. The enemy forces were far superior in numbers. With a very good general in command. I, as the Romans, was defending the recently acquired small town you see. I decided to mostly abandon the defense of the walls and prepare for a last stand by the central square on the hilltop. I set 1 almost full unit of Hastati on each (square) entrance facing the front of the main town entrance, 3 more of them, each about 20-40% of full strength, covering their flanks, 3 more further back for backup/reinforcement. One Triarii between them to be send where needed (my only proper defense against cavalry). One skirmishers and 1 archers ahead of everyone else, to kill what they can of the enemy as it is approaching/reorganizing within the walls, and then fall back to the square. Both of them about 50% strength before the start of the battle.
The enemy approached the hill . With a ton of micromanagement I managed to surround their general and kill him. The morale of the enemy army quickly collapsed, and with my cavalry units outflanking them, the enemy troops found themselves trying to run down the hill to leave the town. My infantry units went after them and the cavalry finished the job. What you see in the circle is about 3000 bodies of the enemy in a slaughter which took about 30-60 seconds. I have won battles against larger armies before, but I don't remember ever experiencing anything like this before. I thought it was just beautiful. Wish I had recorded it. ![]() Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Re: Random Gaming Screenshots
I loved facing outnumbering barbarian forces with a wall of Hastatii, timing the few initial spear throws and microing the close combat to get even a momentary 2on1 advantage. Napoleon was fun but it's never the same rolling up a flank using muskets, as with swords.
![]() An example of a much less glorious things that can happen in this game engine. The Total War games have never been working well when it comes to units and obstacles. Here the generals guard have slowly walked into a spiked wall, bravely onward into death with no enemy in sight... |

Re: Random Gaming Screenshots
Hey, at least it's one of the few games where field defenses work as advertised
