I think that the most significant advancement in video gaming is the passage of time that put those that were kids a couple of decades back into their 30s and 40s, that's what makes gaming really mainstream now and not just for kiddies and rare geeks.

Other than that, affordable home computers and home consoles. Imagine if you had to go to the arcades every time you wanted to play. Also, there would be no gaming hardware industry (at least as we know it now), and even the game publishing would be a lot different.

There is a good chance the whole computing industry wouldn't be where it is now without gaming and the spur of software and hardware demand it caused.

however that was 25+ years ago..

The next largest advancement is connecting them all via the internet allowing anyone to play with anyone around the world.

I have to agree that it was the consoles that brought video gaming home. We even had a few of those years ago long before the PS and XBOX consoles. (Anyone remember Vectrex?)



But, for the past few years it's been the PC that has taken gaming to all new heights...and will continue to do so as PC's will always (should I ever say "always"?) have the upper hand on consoles.

Online gaming is the jack of all trades. Xbox's wouldn't be worth a damn if not for being able to play against or with other people online and the biggest and most popular PC games are online games.
