Call of Duty - second thread WARNING SPOILER

Im just totally amazed at how damn good this game is, ive just got to the section in the game where you are a russian soldlier and you are about to get into stalingrad. and this is one of the best levels ive seen in a game ever. For those of you who have seen the movie Enemy at the gates you will immediately know what im taking about. going across in the boats, then the russian commanders handing out a gun to one russian then ammo to the other, as they didnt have enough weapons to go round. Its just incredible trying to live and make it up into the city then getting the aerial bombardment in to help. Medal of honor omaha beach level? x 100 !!

Now if only ATI would get newer drivers out which would have the compatibility of 3.7 (which work) and the quality of IQ of 3.8 (which hard lock on alot of systems including the three ive tested with).

At least ive the Nvidia quadro which runs this game so beautifully its beyond words. Silky smooth, beautiful colours...... im in heaven gets my vote for FPS of the year !

Has anyone tried extracting the OpenGL segments of the 3.7's and grafting them into the 3.8's?

I've just started playing this game & didn't make it out of the training level because of a hard lock. Talk about teasing!

Its a bit of a mess on the ATI side atm bud, if you use 3.8s the IQ is awesome but its a toss up between hard locks, black screens and other disasters. I cant talk too much about betas after 3.8 but I will say im currently running 3.7 to play the game at all on my 9800 pro. Only problem is the IQ on the 3.7s isnt too hot IMO. 16 bit textures, nasty. Very apparent when you take a grenade and run around stunned

Thank god ive my quadro, this game atm is just so much better for nvidia hardware, its all just as smooth with bright vibrant colours and perfect graphics.......... makes a change for me to be saying a game runs better on nvidia hardware, but im not lying about it.

Evening All,
I've spent the last day playing COD and had to move to the FX5700U in order to play COD without issue.
On both the 9800SE AIW and the 9600P i had hard locks several times, this was with the 3.8's. Because of the 3.7 OGL texture bug i didnt try them to see if they lock (the COD readme says that 3.7 should work) but reduced image quality is not what i want. The FX5700U runs it a 1280x1024 2aa8af very nicely. No noticable stuttering...even when in really fast sections like the first car scene. Well done to NV on this one...and come on ATI, hotfix please!

The game sold out before I got to the store But of the people I know of that do have it.....3.7's work......but dont look that great. I can't think of a single game right now that could cause ATI to lose customer base.......EXCEPT this one. This game has the possibitlity to be bigger than HL2.......and it is here NOW.......which will give it a head start.

I just got off the phone with a store about 60 miles from here......they have 3 copies left......but wont hold one for me!!!! Maybe I will get lucky

Well sofar tested the game on a system with a 9500 and the 3.8's and it runs good, no lock up's nothing.
Played yesterday @ LANParty and must say that the map Pavlov is really sweet. Felt a little like Enemy at the Gates...
Glad i bought this game. SP is awesome sofar.. alot better then MoH

I've been experimenting with this game for the last 2 days-

More experimenting that playing actually- I'm only just entering the sewers after the trainstation- Trainstation is a beautiful piece of artwork IMHO.

Heres the deal with a 9700pro (at least on cat 3.8): running Character Textures and General Textures both on "Extra" will cause stuttering on some maps.. But not all maps, some run like butter with those setting both on extreme.


I'm running 10 x 7 x 32 w 4 X AA and 16x AF with all in game settings to highest possible besides dead bodies- that's on medium, and doesn't affect stuttering as far as I can tell.


Most of the time just turning Character Textures to "High" will completely smooth out the game you can leave General textures on extra with not much stuttering at all. But I miss the nice looking guns..

And when I say stuttering, I mean 80 to 100fps, no vsync, and no hard drive activity- I'm either running out of video memory, and it's trying to use my main system memory, and that's causing the stuttering- or it's a problem with the driver.. Neither should cause huge stuttering, maybe a slowdown, but not a slideshow at 100fps.......

I noticed this in the Demo's too- but not as bad..



For instance I ran the entire Trainstation map with textures on extra with no stuttering, but don't try it in dawnsville- it is a 100fps slideshow at times..... Seems to be related to the textures being rendered on the other Characters in the game- the more there are if "EXTRA" is selected, the worse the stuttering...

r_picmip "0, 1, or 2" and r_picmip2 "0, 1, or 2" are the cvars for the texture settings (I think picmip2 is the character texture level setting.) 0 is highest detail, 2 is least detail.


I also had problems with the game rerveting back to 60hz every time I changed a video setting and had to reset the driver.. Which leads me to my second point-- If anyone out there is still using refresh force for OGL games, DON'T- It caused stuttering, I am able to reproduce it in all Q3 engine games.

Refresh rate override (RROR)- makes openGL games MUCH smoother.. but it won't keep the game at 85hz when resetting the video in game.. So I got into the console after the game loaded and found where it says what video mode you are in (page up / page down in console) - 6 in my case, and then it list's your refresh rate... it always says 60hz, even if you are running at 85hz through RROR-

That's when I figured that was also causing some stuttering and other problems.. Here is the solution.. I've tested it and it works every time.. just pull down console and type r_displayrefresh 85 (for 85hz), Then when you start the game and look in the console it will say mode 6 - 10x 7 x 32 ..blah blah..., then it says 85hz instead of 60hz... This also seems to smooth out the games quite a bit and when you change a video setting in game and have to reset the game, the monitor stays at your chosen refresh rate - never clicks back and forth or anything- monitor doesn't make a sound...

If you want to add this to your .cfg file, add this: seta r_displyrefresh "85" - this works and has solved that problem... And that problem was a huge pain.




The game looks and sounds great, I'm glad I got it- The more play the more I'm amazed at the graphics- they look awesome.. I have not had one lockup at all with the 3.8's stock with an OC'd 9700p..

I am desperately trying to get the cheats to work, not to cheat, but to mess around with some graphic detail settings that are cheat protected. Does anyone know how to enable cheats???? I read a bunch of forums and websites and have found this:

add, +monkeytoy 0 +set_cheats 1 in properties/target for the cod.exe file-- but I've tried that and can't get it to work.. Also, does anyone have a problem turning down their background music? I don't seem to have any controls for it- Maybe it's because of my sound card driver or something, just wondering...


All in all a great game-- the 3.8's look amazing, have not tried 3.7's-- what's this I hear about 16bit textures with 3.7s? Is that a game specific problem? I haven't heard of this before. Please expand on that, thanks.

good game but like all good things it must come to an end, nice ending though, not like the terrible Medal of honour endings....

hmm....
from what everyone saying in the forums, i think the hardlock problems with the cat3.8 is because of the refresh rate problem. To fix this is to set the refresh rate to be the same both in game and in the desktop (like BWX232 said).
I don't actually have the game yet coz it's not out yet in my country but it seems to be another great game.

COD would not load for me with a clean install of 3.9 CATS. Also experienced control problems with Max Payne 2. Went back to 3.7's and no problems with either game. It may just be my system. UT2K3 played good on either driver.

Played clear through COD with 3.7 Cats with no problems. The game is fantastic. Just restarted with difficulty set to max.

Oh-Man this game is amazing I just beat it! And yes Zardon the first Russian mission was incredible.
I cant believe what these men had to go through! I ran most of the game with the 3.7's But about the last half was ran with the 3.9's and it looked fine to me.
Really it looks better on the 3.9's. The night time sky looked like crap with the 3.7's.

Yah I have seen enemy at the gate, most impressive scenes ever.. WAR IS HELL! for sure
that said CoD is also very impressive and a must buy!!
No playing issues what so ever on my rig, (force 24 bit Zbuffer!)
I wish I could stay alive though (I hate cheats)
only down bit is these game are getting to real, finally found out why my Dad would never talk about WW2, (he was a Marine corporal)

My dad was a medic. He was only there maybe a year before it was over. And he was 17
I did hear of one story where he almost got his throat cut by a wounded German.
I know it's off topic, but what I was told is this German was a prisoner, And he wasnt searched good enough.
He had a pocket knife on him. Anyways my dad was dressing his wound, and he grabbed my dad and put this knife to his throat.
He was trying to get away, My dad said this old army Sargent came up with his Thompson and the German was behind my dad and he was holding the knife so tight to his throat that it was starting to cut in.
He said this Sargent took aim and fired one shot and the German soldier's head just exploded!
That was something I heard from my mom. Dad didn't talk about it with us.
My mom did say that after it was over the Sargent just looked at my dad and winked, and walked away.

Fraid not, installed 3.9 last night and still getting texture corruption and lockups...gonna roll back to 3.7 to see if that works

I was finally able to get CoD last night.....had to drive about an hour away to get it...everyone was sold out I tried the Cat 3.9's, because a few people said that they were lucky and didn't have any issues.......but I wasn't one of the lucky ones. I had to play the entire game with the Cat 3.7's. And it played just fine with them.

Only thing that kinda bother's me about the game is that it didn't take very long to beat......less than 7 hours......I wish it would of lasted twice that long. A good 50 levels would of been nice. I hope they have an expansion pak out soon The only thing that is left would be the Japanese front. The game was awesome......just wish it would of kept right on going Now it is time to start all over and crank up the level........then do it again.....and again.......and again........kind of like what everyone did with the demo's!!

Maybe the next game they put out will be about the Korean War.......and then the Vietnam War.....maybe even Desert Storm.....

I beat it yesterday-- Only played about 6 hours of actual play time. I didn't play for a few days, then popped it back in and finished it in 5 minutes- I thought it was going to be MUCH longer.. Bummer..

I know the feeling......I think they rushed it a little bit. Hell when you look at MOHAA they made the war into several expansion paks. I was hoping for the same here. Now I think that they just limited what they can do. But I do love the game!!

Yup, it's one of the best FPS' I've ever played. Just a few bugs and way too short. The only reason it's too short is because it's so good though- like a great movie- you don't care if it's 3 hours long..

Only one thing I really don't like-- no way to turn off music, yes it's good music, but it really makes me want to strangle someone at Activision/ and or Infinityward- whoever took out that music slider and disabled the cvar to turn it off deserves a good b*cth slap.. lol--

no really, I would slap them silly, then tell them how good the game is anyway..

the 16bit issue with the cat 3.7's is this only the death/stunned scenes? Or is this in the whole game? I haven't noticed any glaring ugliness using the 3.7's a comparison anywhere?

I have to say that reaching the 'final goal' of this game has been one memorable moment of computer gaming that will stick with me for a long, long time!

It's ironic that I completed this game on our Veterans' Day here in the USA. So, I take a moment to salute all our veterans and thank you for the sacrifices you made/make for our freedom.

And, I pause to think of those who paid the 'ultimate sacrifice'.
