Freeing Memory Before Playign Games
I noticed powerstrip has a free memory option. Anyway when I start my computer it says I have around 168mbs free but if i free my memory i have 222mbs free. This is with windows98se remember, I was wondering if I should restart and/or free my memory before playing games. I gained about 50 points in 3dmark 2k1 when i did not free my memory and just restarted. But battlefield (which uses more memory then 3dmark) seemed to be runing slower. Was it just my imagination?

I've consistently found that rebooting without any unnecessary programs running is the best way to go. That's especially true on 9x/ME systems. I don't think it's your imagination.

Yea... I don't have much in msconfig its all good. But your post sorta umm, well ur saying battlefield was running slower when i didnt free my memory, but you also say just restarting is good. Which is what i did and it seemed to be running slower then when i freed the memory.

I'd disable all but the LoadPowerProfile and RadBoot.

Don't I need all that other stuff? If I don't then what is it they're for?

You don't absolutely have to have the other stuff, no. What you're doing is testing to see if you can free up more memory after a reboot. Try it and see how it goes. You can always turn any of those things back on again.

Otherwise, if there's not a noticeable difference, use the more convenient method. |
