america's army is actually a game written by the U.S. army, and it is completely and entirely free. but if you do well, expect a recruiter on your doorstep

oh, and it's a hefty 200mb download (sorry 56k'ers)

Some of us 56k'ers are the persistant type who ain't intimidated by a measly 200MB download, it's only about 13 hours on a good connect. (Yes, I speak from experience.

It's the damned movies and .ISOs that make me feel all left out of the broadband movement...but fortunately I have kind friends.

Well im on a 64k isdn from greece and it took me (with latest DAP) about 10 hours

The game plays pretty nice, but the waits really suck. I think they screwed the pooch on this one.

I think it's that they're trying to create a different kind of atmosphere for the game. It's not meant to be a run and gun kind of crazy FPS. If they can get just one kid to play it and think, "hmm... that's pretty neat," and then click on the GO ARMY button, then their mission is a success.

And isn't "Hurry Up And Wait" the motto of the army? They just want you to experience life as a true soldier.

I'm still working on the first firing range mission. I keep getting one shot away from going for my sniper training.

so we can't really complain too loudly. It's better than a lot of other games we normally toss our money away on.

I download movies on 56k dialup quite a bit. Just leave the thing connected at night until about 7:00am and set up the connection to connect whenever the internet is not present and after 4 days, movie time! It's a pain but get's the job done.
