Thumbs Up! UT2004 Supports SMP (Dual Processor) Rigs!!

After loosing myself in a deluge of Death Match, Bombing run and Onslaught Maps for probably about 12 hours over the past 2 days I have one thing to say.... This Game soooooo F*ck*ng ROCKS!!!

It took me a few hours to actually notice it , but I had sent off an email to Digital Extremes last summer asking them if they would please please please enable SMP support in the new UT2004 engine. I got a reply from a woman by the name of Meridith telling me she would pass on my request to the guys at Epic. Whoooooo lo and behold when I fire this baby up and run the game in an 1152 X 864 Window, keeping an eye on both CPU O and CPU 1, BOTH processors are chuggin away there tryin to keep up with me!!!

It is so cool to have a game that i Luv and will play often finallyyyyyy support multi-processor systems

Kudos to the guys at Epic and Digital Extremes for a superb job on this Title!!!!

I'm not surprised~

With HT processors about, to find an engine which doesn't support multiprocessor is a kind of a downer.

actually neon, what happens with the hyper-threading from what i've heard is because it's being detected as 2 processors, programs which support the dual processor setup actually force more info through yielding better performance. also i heard xp home doesnt support dual processors but xp pro does, does this mean HT is useless on home edition? i might be wrong about what i said correct me if i was anyone

must be a typo bigbrownie, you said 1500+ score in 32mark01 and a 5100+ in 3d03. Probably meant 15000+ in 01?

I'm hoping to see if I can come up with some specific numbers this weekend regarding how much benefit there actually is from having 2 processors running this title or limiting it to only one. After observing more map results and even doing the spectating mode I think my average CPU use is around 60 to 65 % or so. I do know however than neither processor is maxing... processor CPU 0 could be around 30 % or so and CPU 1 at around 70, 75 %.. so the game is definately dividing the processing load bt both chips. Im not sure though why it doesn't seem to want to use more processing power than this.... perhaps with my 9800 65% is all the processing power the title needs. I've had a few occasions where it goes to the 70's and low eighties but not that often really.

currently running it at 1152x768 2xfsaa/16x anisotropic filtering

ROFL @ intel P4
There are a lot of people who have moved from AMD to Intel when the P4Cs came out, and they've reported the opposite of what you said. Maybe this "someone" of yours could ask you for some tweaking

P.S - I really think you should tame your bias views. It can only spark trouble.

What kind of game is UT2K4? Is it more CPU dependent or GPU dependent? I've always seen it as a GPU dependent game. Thus, the additional CPU power of SMP wouldn't make that much of a difference. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Well, in the manual they list the GPU as the first upgrade one should consider if upgrading, but the game also seems to run much better on AMD hardware so dual P4s or HT enabled ones should show improvement if supported.

That's true. But, what if you run it on a 2500+ and a 2800+ or a P4 2.4C and a 2.8C. Would there be a significant difference between the processors of the same vendor? I know that the difference between a 9600 XT to a 9800 XT is whopping though. I wish I had the beans for a 9800 XT

I thought i would go ahead and post a screen grab (even though no one specifically asked me for one yet)

Here is a screen i grabbed from the Light_Falls map... CPU 0 is the first box, and CPU 1 the second, both averaging 60% usage.
