Wink Gaming Music and You!

MTV's VMA 04 was on last night and they had the "Best Video Game Soundtrack" category (Tony Hawk's Underground won BTW), besides seeing nominations of games from only "EA" or "Activision" since they're the only ones who can afford to pay artists to lend their musi.. .. It reminded me of hearing Final Fantasy 8's Opening theme "Liberi Fatali" being used as a song while this duet from the U.S.A performed in synchronized swimming during the Olympics. I was like, "Whoa! They're using FF8 music!"

Well, for over 2 years now, I've listened to nothing but gaming related music with a lil tranquility and techno on the side. I've forsaken anything with lyrics.I just enjoy gaming music more.

For a long time now this section of gaming has been growing and growing~ Share your thoughts on it.

I have always enjoyed the Rob Zombie like music of Quake 3, I didnt realize the Doom 3 experience would be better until we closed the store and cranked up the music on all the games....Even Homeworld is good, wow...
Call me an ubernoob, but who comes up with this stuff, its fabulous, I want to hear the Hero soundtrack in a game...that would be awesome...

For your listening enjoyment: http://www.ocremix.org/

I always feel like an ubergeek when I accidentally leave some of these babies in my play list and my friends think it sounds familiar.

Instrumentals are quite pleasing but games are really missing out by not including some voice. Scary games could include whispering voices and many action games it really doesn’t matter if the original lyrical components are intact except when another game character is talking.

My personal favorites are from FF3, ChronoTrigger, Secret of Mana, DN3d, Metroid and all admittedly old school. Most more current game music has seemed empty to me even though they can make anything they want now and aren't just limited to midi.

i have many game soundtracks...not limited to:

final fantasy 3, 7, 8, 9, 10
xenogears, xenosaga
chrono trigger, chrono cross
bfv (lol)
ut2k4
super metroid
(well, actually most snes/psx games, i have that psf/psf2 and snes music plugin)
alot of others, cant remember...

i dont think that the tony hawk games should be put into competitions like that...the music wasnt written for the game.

mmm tbh i ussually disable game music

ever since i got into serious gaming it proved vital to hear the sounds your opponents make, music distracts and blocks sounds so i never use ingame music anymore.
I play UT2004 every day since the demorelease and i never heard the music once is it nice ?

for single player, i let whatever is in game play, dont really care what it is. for online gameing, ive always got some kind of real music playing, like right now ive got van halen, led zepplin, guns n roses, a perfect circle, 36 crazyfists, and fuel set up for my gameing pleasures in a few moments.
as for game sound tracks, ive got FFX, piano and OST. FFX2, piano and OST. all of FF7. MGS2 and MGS TS. i had the entire need for speed hot pursuit soundtrack till my hard drive killed its self. now ive just got a couple of songs form that, and the NFS underground sound track. ive also got the Silent Hill 3 sound track, with bits and pieces of the other SH sound tracks thrown in, i need to finish downloadint them.

Mmm,. game music.
My favs are System Shock 2 (amazing, but it was turned up WAY too high in-game, so, naturally, I turned it down), Deus Ex (probably my favorite), and the origional UT.

You can notice the difference between 128 Kbit and 192 kbit on an MP3 file without lyrics?! Amazing..

There's no need for me to disable music for UT because I'm not too hardcore into it. But everyother game has their music auto disabled for MP play anyways.

Anyways, I like OSTs and OCRemix work. I have a large list of music.. do I feel like a 'geek' when my friends hear it? Nah. At least most if not all gaming music was made with artistic intent and not with intent on making big money

And I concur with your comment Nacht

I have a 200 dollar ear, if it costs more than 200 dollars, I cant appreciate it. I noticed I enjoy the 5.1 better than the 7.1 effects..dont know why...I have hearing loss from 16 inch gunfire quals on my old ship. I prefer the ominous and scary stuff...
QUESTION: what is the scariest game soundtrack you all have heard?

right now on my hd, i got the soundtrack for Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 plus a custom track list i made from some of the tracks from NFS: High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed and Hot Pursuit. I also like the sound track for FFX, UT2k4 and a few other games that i have, though i can't remember them...

eww god no, you can definitely hear the difference between 128 and 192. even if it has no lyrics. just listen to any cymbals in the song at all and you will definitely here it...not to mention the hits are definitely softer, and the stereo seperation starts to loose its definition.

for encoding, use either 192VBR LAME a.p.s. mp3, or q6 Ogg Vorbis

anyways, back to the original convo! the ut2k4 soundtrack is really good...it sounds more like a movie soundtrack than a game one...i really like hyperblast redux, though it is a bit short. most of the songs in the game were written by Kevin Riepl. he added amazing stuff to the original UT songs (hyperblast redux being an example)...like all the orchestrated parts *yum*

ya, about that 128 vs 192+, ive got 2 diffrent bit rates of the same song, 1000 words, theres such a huge diffrence between the 2. the 192 sounds infinatly better. if any one want to try it, search for 1000 words - orchestral, and download the 192 and 128 versions then listen to them. you can tell a big diffrence.
btw, if that song title sounds familer to some of you, its the song that yuna sang in the tunder plains in final fantasy x-2

I tried looking for some 128 bit songs, but I found that I have so very little of them. Most of mine are 160 bit +.. It was way back then when I considered 128 kbps.. OK. I guess all the OCRemix stuff I've downloaded were encoded at 160+.. Even the OSTs downloaded are at least 192 kbps

SH3 has the best sound track. 1,2 and 4 don't compare.

Hyperblast Redux owns.

I recommend the Front Mission 4 OST. It has some really good tracks. Soul Calibur 2 has some good ones as well. I want to dig through the past and get the Resident Evil game OSTs.

*if you find a torrent for those RE OST's let me know, i want those too.

SH4 torrent is out there. Nacht, I dislike C&C. I couldn't stand the game so I don't recall the soundtrack.

Anybody else enjoy the classic gaming tunes like from SF2, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, 3 etc? I suggest going over to OCremix.org and getting some of the great remixes there

Sonic The Hedgehog - Love Hurts by DJ Pretzel is pure gold to me! *__* (DH needs some animesque smilies )

If you're looking for something on the tranquility side.. Try out:

Sonic 3D Blast Symphonic Ruin OC ReMix by Jive Master.
