Sims 2 CD Question
Interesting thing happened to my buddy this afternoon. He tried installing the game and got to the CD-Key part and had to cancel out. Once he found his CD Key and tried to restart the installation it wouldn't work. He said he could see the files, but none of the files could be opened. It was weird. I tried opeing file folders in explorer and they were empty. I tried opening a txt file and a right click wouldn't even give me a menu. I rebooted - no luck. I tried other CD's and didn't have the problem - vis a vis I don't think it is a universal drive issue. I took his CD and tried it on my computer - canceling at the cd key entry (I don't even have this game) and no problems. CD works fine. My thought is something got hung during his initial installation. I checked the registry and didn't find any entries for "sim" that were relevant.
Any help? Anybody? Thanks, bob |

When you say "explorer" i take it you mean Windows. If your friend is running Windows XP and just happens to have gotten one of the SPs (service packs, either 1 or 2) then maybe, this may be the prob. Service pack looks great, and feels great (for some people<shiver>) but works like sh*t. Check out the read me on the cd and see if the sims website has anything to say about this issue. If not, then ask them about it.
One crapy thing about SP1 is reinstalling graphics card drivers. The bloody OS keeps on installing its own drivers autumatically when you start up, and, as you may know, you cant just run driver cleaner normally, must be in safe mode. But on restart, SP1 stupidly reinstalls the flippin drivers you just removed WTH? You get pissed, clean drivers in normal mode anyway, registry gets messed up, you install new drivers, they dont work? What, does Microsoft think there are no gamers out there who use SP1? This happened on a friends laptop running a GE-FORCE FX5200 Go yesterday and i just cant understand it.

If you use the CAB cleaner that is in the Driver Cleaner then you wouldn't have that problem.

The sims 2 won't install on PC's with cloneCD and some other burning/virtual drive programs.

Its just a matter of disabling your virtual drive capability in Nero/Clone CD/Daemon Tools.
The tech support for sims 2 gives instructions how to do this: http://eagames.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/..._prod_lvl1=474 Click on Problem No. 15775 (sorry, the url to get straight there is way to long; it makes the page go all funny)
