Medal of Honor Pacific Assault Review

Nearly three years ago, Electronic Arts brought its Medal of Honor series of World War II-themed first-person shooters to the PC in Medal of Honor Allied Assault, and that game went on to become highly influential. By combining intense run-and-gun shooting action with an incredibly authentic atmosphere and some spectacular set-piece battles, Allied Assault helped establish the genre's current high standards. Seemingly countless other historic war-themed shooters have been released since then, so it's become very difficult for such a game to distinguish itself...or even compete.

That sucks. That's what really drove me nuts about the demo. I've turned into an AA elitist and if I can't get it, I don't like the way most games look. Once that is fixed, I will probably give the game a spin.

yeah even at 1600x1200 its noticeable, especially on the vehicles and weaponry. Its a pity too because the particle effects are some of the best ive seen.

The outstanding thing in this game apart from the graphics, is the 5.1 sound, the clarity and mixing is the best ive heard, now to repair the windows !

Cool. I hope it's as enjoyable with my 2.1s. But I actually find more than 2 channels confusing sometimes.

Im sure it will be great on 2.1 as well, the whole game sounds as if they spent masses on the audio side of things, from voice acting, to weapon sounds, music etc. its certainly becoming a test of future speakers with gaming. going to be a benchmark test game for audio, there is a section later on when you jump onto a mounted machine gun and the whole floor was shaking when I was firing it.

Sounds cool, I wish that I could play that loud, but I can't, I'm not living in a house and my son is very easy awaken.

Whats your impression so far Zardon, are the graphics that good??
Is the water like FarCry??

the graphics are excellent yes, ive seen the odd little glitch such as a tree not level with the ground on some slopes etc, but overall its very polished. The water, well yes id say its as good but its not got the same fantasy style lighting as farcry's due to the nature of the game of course, but its very impressive indeed.

Without giving too much away there is a level in which you are on a battleship defending it from bombers and fighters and you are on some mounted weaponry and the whole environment really just needs to be seen to be believed. the smoke effects and the way it rises into the sky, along with the water around the battleship and the way the sky is full of masses of aircraft dogging it out. The draw distance is also excellent. It is one of the rare times ive felt you could actually crawl into the screen and touch it.

Im sure people will point out its flaws and its not really bringing anything new to the table but I have to say I reloaded a few levels just to walk around as I did with farcry, its that visually impressive, nice use of Shader2 with some great levels. I also like the way the medics can heal you when you call them but if you are in the wrong place the enemy either put their boot in your face as you lie bleeding or cram the end of their rifle into you.

Excellent and really worth getting, im enjoying it and its certainly an awesome aural and visual system work out. quite how multiplayer will work ive no idea, I tend to go more for single player.

It tends to run very smooth on P4 systems too as ive heard they have used code to break up the virtual CPUS, with one handling sound. Runs great on the FX55 as well :P

Only major negative thing I will say is that AA wont work with this game and even at 1600x1200 its noticeable with it off. pity lets hope they patch it.

Wow thanks for the input, I really want this game now, can't wait.

And performance of course with your system is top notch I guess.

I hope I can set everything to max as well and still play with AF.

My CPU is getting a bit old now.

im beginning to believe that there is some type of hardware config problem with my system.dirrectly after install there was a windows scipt host error stating that the installer couldnt find a temp file, firewall.vbs.,but the game seemed to have installed correctly, then whe i go to play the right dvd was not recognized by the exe.so i uninstalled a few times and eventually i got it to play.still about 1 in 5 times the dvd isnt recognized.the game seems to play great except for this issue and the fact that i cant use 100mhz refreshrate,i had to reconfigure my desktop so the game would not look distorted.i also have a problem with mohaa not remembering my settings,i have to reset everything everytime i play mohaa or bt or sh.ea says all these problems are my pc's fault.i have over 50gig of games installed and these are the only games that i havent been able to fix.all divers are up to date and firmware and firewall is disabled and antivirus is disabled and there is nothing running durring any install i do wether it be game or app.wierd

From EA:
This error message will in no way harm the installation of Xfire nor will it harm the installation of MOHPA. This error message will usually occur if you choose to unblock the program before finishing the installation. If you do not dismiss the Windows Firewall Security Alert prior to finishing the installation of the game, you will not see this error message.

Have you guys noticed the subtle use of colour techniques in this game? im not talking about when you are shoot etc and the fade outs, blurring etc, but some of the levels are deliberately "washed out" with the intention to make you see how the lightining in certain locations is. there is a jungle level later on and the whole thing is almost pastel in design, which just blew me away, especially as the level after it in a different part of the area is vivid and bright.

some excellent concepts in this game.

I really love this game to, but I find it hard at times, the Graphics is as Z said just awesome, the sound is......well you feel that you really are there.

I like the fact that it's feels like you really are there, it's a great story and a great game.
