Battlefield 1942

Battlefield 1942 is selling at $15 at Sam's Club. Is it a good a game to pick up at the price? It's got no expansion pack though.

It's got way more than $15 worth of play in it.

ok, Thanks fellas.

I just bought it. I'll try it our this evening. I heard lots of good things about it but when I played demo it was rather boring. I see the gameplay differs a little from conventional FPS. Is there some way to enjoy this game as much as you guys do?

What did you find boring with it? Were their certain problems and specifics that you had issues with? If that is the case, we may be able to advise you certain shortcuts and such in the games that make it flow faster and be alot more fun.

You should download Desert Combat as well...It's almost like an entirely different game. very fun

Thank you guys.

I played for a couple of hours now. I think it's great idea that you can use many different warfares at your disposal. I haven't played long but it looks very well-designed.

Here are my gripes. I started with the single player campaign.
1. During the game I found that time to wait to respawn was too long(as long as 20 sec) and I managed to die a lot
2. I also found hard to control the vehicles like tanks and airplanes. I tried to move around as much as possible but I get killed very shortly every time I try the tanks. With airplane, I never get a chance to shoot anything and ended up crashing whether with cockpit view or chase view.
3. I haven't tried multiplayer on the Internet yet but I think, with the luck I am having in the single player, I'll probably get raped all the time and still don't know what happened.

It's probably that I suck at controls since the only game I seriously play is CS. But somehow, I feel that I am missing something since many many people seems to have lots of fun with this title.

Thanks.

ok, first problem:

single player SUCKS! do NOT play single player, that is not a good way to get a feeling of the game trust me, it is WAY more fun online

respawn times change from server to server. there will be a set revolving "reinforcement time"...so if you die 30 secs from the reinforcement time, you have to wait the full 30 secs...if you die 5 secs away then you only wait 5.

it is really hard to fly planes with a keyboard and mouse. i managed to get good with them, but i used a keyboard and trackball. other people like using just the keyboard, as you can use the arrow keys to change pitch/roll, and use spacebar to fire. also, you can hit f9 twice to switch to the nose cam. this is the same as the cockpit view without the actual cockpit in your viewing area. this is what everyone uses online...you can see the best for dog fighting and bombing.

in tanks, try turning up the vehicle sensitivity in the options. this should make it easier to look around and kill enemies before they can kill you.

when fighting on foot, hit control to crouch before you start shooting. this will help alot with recoil.

Well, single player is ok to practice flying and such...and it takes practice. But online is where all the fun is at. I would definately recommend downloading Desert Combat.

Well, the nose cam sure helps with the flght control but I am still not doing well with any target shooting. It's almost impossible to chase a target(either land or air) and deliver some damage for me whereas other players hit me again either from the air or land with dead-on accuracy. I am a little frustrated. Is it usually like this for a novice player?

I am going to D/L the Desert Combat tonight and give it a try. I also noted that there is a Star Wars mod(don't remember the title) with a bunch of starfighters. Do you guys have any experience with it?

Thanks for the info guys.

The star wars mod was no good last time I played it. The maps are too big and snowspeeders are too powerful.

Playing bf is nothing like playing cs. I'm incredible at bf and terrible at cs. Remember that bf is not a death match, you have a goal to accomplish (capturing bases). If you keep that in mind you'll get lots of points.
Unless you're anti tank you have no chance against a tank. Hide from it if you can, even if it's just behind a skinny tree. Any cover helps. Don't move if you see one. This can also apply to other vehicles, but those usually expose the drivers so you can stop them if you're so inclined.
If you're a scout, don't stay still. Kill stuff on the way to your next capture point using the distance to your advantage.
Never run at the tops of hills. This makes you stand out against the horizon and will draw a lot of attention to you from snipers and smart players who will figure out where you're headed. Always run just a little under the top of the hill (so that your under the horizon).
Stay off the roads unless you're in a vehicle. Cause vehicles are on the roads, and you already know how dead that's gonna make you.
Your grenades are one hit kills unlike CS, so they're actually useful. Lob them at common hiding spots once you learn them.
There's no splash damage on the anti vehicle rockets. They're concentrated for penetrating a tank. If you are attacking infantry with the rockets you'll need a direct hit to even damage them (and kill them).
Any vehicle is faster than running. It doesn't matter if it looks like a jawa sandcrawler or some sort of tank incest baby, it's faster than you. Exception, don't take airplanes unless you're good with them. As you've found out, the people who can control airplanes are very helpful.
Play your role. Medics and engineers have decent guns, but never neglect repairing or healing when the chance arrises.
Report tanks. They require special attention and if your team knows they're coming you can avoid a slaughter.
Don't be afraid to hide. Scouts only have a pistol for close range, if you can't get the jump on a soldier class, you're probably dead. It's ok to duck behind something or hide in a house.
Lead your shots. This game has realistic bullet traveling and you need to get used to it before taking on long ranged shots.
Dive. If you press your prone button while jumping you'll do a forward dive. This can be great for crossing a gap you know an enemy is watching as well as taking cover behind a low wall.

Here's a trick I never share with anyone. If you can get close to a tank (you know which way it's looking thanks to the barrel) then pull out your pistol and shoot it a bit. Duck next to it and keep pushing forward into the treads. Most tank pilots will spin around a bit trying to find you and then drive a little forward and backwards. Since you're pushing into the treads it'll be easy for you to follow wherever the tank moves. Once they're amply disatisfied with their ability to kill you from inside the tank, they will step out of it. This is why you've been mashing your enter vehicle key for the past minute. The second they get out you hop into the tank and drive into the sunset. If they blow up your tank, who cares that's one less tank for the enemy. If you get away with it then it's doubly beneficial.
To counter this, drive in a straight line for a few seconds. Infantry can't keep up (even pushing against your treads) if you go in a straight line. Turn around and exterminate.

I downloaded and installed DC_final but the game exits to windows whenever I tried to join a server or play instant action with the warning sound. I can play reqular BF just fine. Anyone have similar experience like this?

What did you download? You need both DC.7 and DC_final if you are joining DC final servers, which are the majority of them out there.

I just reread your post. Yes, you need DC.7 before installing DC_final.

BTW, BF2 will own you all! I can't wait.

Thank you for help.
I went to DC forum site and figured it out yesterday. Also installed .7beta and all works well. I like DC better than the original even though the air units are harder to control. Those helicopter flying is almost like calculus III to me.
I'm still a novice but started to like it.
I saw another mod which I can't remember the title but it seems like a kind of WW2 mod. I saw it at fileplanet.com and the size of the file was whoopping 1.6 gig approx!!! It says something about power of a kind of tank at its peak or something. Anyone has any experience with this?

Yes, I saw the article about BF2 and it looked promising.

You're probably talking about Forgotten Hope. FH is a great mod. It's WW2 themed but leans heavily towards realism. It is fantastic.

Oh and I know it was mentioned before, but Galactic Conquest which is the Star Wars mod did used to be pretty weak. The latest version is quite impressive and worth a download.

Don't give up on the choppers. Practice offline though or the other players will yell at you for sucking it up. I use a stick to fly and I find it easier than the mouse, but there are tons of people who are deadly pilots with the mouse. In BFV and BF2(when it comes out) the choppers are a lot easier to fly from the beginning. But it does take a lot of practice to master them and that's one of the many facets that makes the Battlefield franchise my favorite MP franchise.

There is also a mod for DC called DCX which will release their latest version soon. The developers on that mod are insanely talented and that mod will definitely extend the shelf life of DC. This next version is going to have more stuff and be better than DC Final.

Yes, that is one thing I love about the engine; each different form of movement (infantry, vehicles, air) has its own keybinding section, so you can set up flying or driving completely different from walking. it's ingenious!
