??? Thoughts on Half Life redone with the Source engine

I'm very disappointed that Valve didn't do a full conversion of the original Half Life. It seems a shame; One of the best games ever getting a full Source engine make-over may well have helped introduce it to a whole new audience. I'm sure if they did redo it properly, loads of people would buy it.

That said, there are a lot of games that could return to the sales charts if re-done with the latest technology - Imagine "System Shock 2" redone using the Doom3 engine , or "Clive Barker's Undying" using the Source engine !

Any other game make-over suggestions or opinions?

Don't forget the modding community will probably retexture half life source so don't be too disappointed yet.

I must admit I am really looking forward to seeing what amazing things the mod community is going to do with Source. And "They hunger" rokz! But I'm just wondering if the games industry is going to paralell the movie industry regarding remakes; has Valve started a trend? Will the publishers re-visit old games, or is this more of a one off? Good original ideas, done well, seem to be a bit thin on the ground. Would you rather see some classic games re-made, and if so, which ones? I don't want industry focus to move away from new ideas and original content, but I'd rather see money and effort being put into breathing new life into a proven classic, than wasted on " film tie-in" games and other greed driven crap( yes, there is the odd exception or two....... I just can't think of any at the moment). If publishers want to make an easy dollar, don't churn out stuff that even they must know is crap; resurrect something of quality! Just a thought

As pointed out by rjpogi, there are some brilliant mods out there that could do with the treatment as well.

One game I thought of; "Hostile Waters; Antaeus Rising". Personally, I thought it was an absolute classic. I'm not sure what graphics engine though.

And I can only imagine what "Deux Ex" would be like using the Source engine!

Argggh, seen this topic already. Valve put HL1 on source so that people could mod with a common toolset and take advantage of new features. It's up to the mod community to do what they want with HL1. I personally have zero interest in HL1:Source and rather play anything and everything HL2. To expect that Valve would re-do HL1 and provide HL2 is a little selfish I think. You should just be happy it's all there on Source now. I hate when people keep saying make a game with the Doom3 engine. Doom3 engine is a crock of crap. It's just a modded Q3 engine with a slightly improved rendering engine. The rendering engine is not even new. Doom 3 sucked as well. I'd rather see System Shock 2 on Source than crap quake/doom engine. Doom also ran like crap on ATI hardware until much later. Even still nVidia cards beat ATI cards in performance..Doom 3 is the biggest overrated piece of trash I've ever seen. I guess gamers have very little taste when it comes to graphics. To not let painted on shadows bother you, cheap textures mixed in with high quality textures.(man I got 50 some shots of complete crap scenery shots)lousy physics and unimaginative things such as stolen PDA idea. The Multiplayer is a complete joke and as far as I'm concerned, embrassment for iD. I got so turned off I never even completed Doom3, complete bore, engine didn't impress me in the slightest. Gee, who can't make a based all around darkness.. wooo. Arggh, I hate Doom3. Source as far as I'm concerned runs circles around Doom3 in every aspect. It's too bad Bloodlines didn't take more advantage of higher end textures. Probably for their next release I guess.

when did the thread become into doom2 anyway?

i like the half life: source

i did never even pass from the 4th chapter (ohh yeah, thx valve now i can how much am i advanced in the game) i got bored, the sound was crappy, the image quality was horrible, this redone is grat, the phisics are nice thing yeah, the image quality, well its still the same, but at least the water and the shadows (dont remember if the original had shadows like that) and the reflections, and the lighting (oh my god that lighting), and well, everything is greatly enhanced, now im about the 12th level and is looking pretty good, this one? yeah i got bored in the original, but this one keeps me to get going, i started playing hl2 even with an underclocked vid card, and is great but i guess is better finish the first one first, and now i have a reason to do so ^^

hope the textures get modded or somethen soon anyway

take a look at this thread with comparission screenshots, makes a lot of a difference, and it doesnt even show the water

Oh my, Clive Barker's Undying redone... yummy! But that game still rocks on original engine. OMG, it's one of the absolute best gaming experiences I've ever had. Scary shit, in the best of ways!

actually the Doom3 Engine was a brilliant piece of work that has just about been unmatched. Yeah the game sucked...whoopdiedoo. it was suppose to just be for the engine. And does the engine ever deliver. I'd say that its better than the crytek Engine even. Mostly because it actually isnt as demanding as the Crytek engine while still producing superb graphics.

And even if you think its a sucky engine, you will be seeing MANY games based on that engine in the near future.

Sandok will become famous soon enoughSandok will become famous soon enough

I hope that the Doom engine will be used... It WAS gorgeous... But if only we could mix all 3 engines!!!

Lighting and shadows from Doom

Facial Animations and shaders from HL2

Huge vegatation rendering from Far Cry

=> Good engine?

Good Grief Sandok! I nearly passed out just thinking about it!

Yep, Geminiwave, gotta agree there. D3 is an awesome showcase of tech advance in gaming; just a fairly dull game.

Further to my original thread thoughts; I noticed a remake is doing quite well as we speak - Sid Meier's Pirates.

My tip is that we'll see more and more remakes.

Well, there is a group apparently that's attempting to completely redo HL:1 in Source as a mod:

Black Mesa: Source is a Half-Life 2 modification intent upon recreating Half-Life 1 on the Source Engine. Now before you all flame back saying 'It's already been done: Half-Life: Source Fool!', let me just say that we fully understand and know that Half-Life: Source is an actual game out there with Half-Life 1 on the Half-Life 2 engine. But we're not here to give you another Half-Life: Source, we're here to give you something far more impressive: Black Mesa: Source. We are not a group of the most talented people in the development industry, but what we are is a group of dedicated and die-hard fans of Half-Life 1 that want to see it shine on Source. We plan to do this in many ways:

  • --Reconstructing levels based upon the originals in order to bring you the same facility with a new look and feel.
--Complete redo of the Half-Life 1 enemies, allies and weapons in order to give you an immersive and impressive experience unlike any other before or after it.
--Completely re-worked textures with bump & normal mapping along with new 'texture baking' techniques to make the walls and other brushes "come-alive".
--Compiling new ambient sounds including radio chatter, gunfire, explosions and other dynamic sounds critical to the Half-Life 1 experience.
--Enhance the Marine and Enemy AI to make them more fierce and as impressive as they were to audiences in 1998.
--Working diligently in order to effectively tie the Half-Life 1 and Half-Life 2 storylines together without altering the fabric that made Half-Life 1 so great.
--Enhancing many other aspects of Half-Life that were just simply impossible on the 1998 Engine.
Just as Valve said "a community remake of Half-Life 1 is not only possible, it's inevitable". Official development will begin on January 1st, 2005 with a rock solid and dedicated team of level designers, modelers, texture artists, conceptual artists and coders ready to give the Black Mesa Research Facility the 'Trading Spaces' make-over it deserves. At this time we are not actively seeking any positions to be filled (as we almost have a full-roster as it is), but in the future we will be requiring the need of a character and weapons animator. We would however like to hear your thoughts, opinions, beliefs, and suggestions to Black Mesa: Source, the Half-Life 1 remake on the Source Engine.
__________________________________________________ ______________

It'll be interesting to see if a project with this level of vision will actually follow through and deliver a viable result, especially with the timeframes that they're discussing.

Nice to hear from you Denzil; Very interested about your project! Would very much like to follow its progress.

I have a friend who grabbed the HL2 silver package last week. He decided to play HLSource first, having never done so before. He was absolutely blown away!

He has already talked several mates into buying the package, and HLSource being included was, to him, what made it such a great deal.

I mentioned the Black Mesa: Source project, and his first response was along the lines of "you'd have to play that".

Anyway, any more details on what you guys are up to would be greatly appreciated

Fear not i'll be keeping an eye on these forums Keep you guys updated.

BM:S will be free to download for any owner of any of the Half-Life2 packages. It is unlike Half-Life: Source in the way that it is not a direct port of the original game, we will be putting a lot of time and effort into this modification.

Media images are about, although not publically released yet, we will be saving them all till our first big news post, which will be massive We're not fans of the "hey guys we've started a mod, urr.. here's a wip" type of modification which then dies away.

At current we are in between early development and last minute design planning, we have been planning since about September, with well over triple figure page documents completed on numerous areas of the game. We already have one chapter mapped, an assload of concepts and several models well underway. Our official start of development is 1st January, 2005.

The news post might be a while still, but rest assured it'll be well worth the wait.

We put every single idea and area of the game up for discussion with the fans and public in our forums, we're working very close with the community on this one so as not to ruin what made Half-Life a classic. Feel free to pop over and contribute, every comment counts to us, seriously.

Cheers guys,

how long to you expect the development to take?

Are there going to be any new weapons or are you sticking with the original weapons?

are there going to be new monsters or, again, are you sticking with the original concepts?

New characters?

We're keeping as true to the original is possible, so we aren't planning on adding new enemies and such. Although we will be adding new scientist, grunt and barney faces and bodies (randomly selected), and maybe some female employees.

Development will take a long time, not going to lie on this one. We've given estimates of about a year (Minimum) but could be a bit longer, we're well on our way, just some departments (Modelling mainly) will take longer than others.

CO-OP mode is already planned, i am working on this part of the modification myself, in regards to getting everything planned, coded, mapped, modelled et cetera. This will be included in the first release also.
