Are MMORGPs more nerdy than other genres?
So as the name says... What you all think?

I think they can get very nerdy. I have friends that these sort of games are an addiction not unlike alcohol. i am not saying they are all nerdy, as I have never really gotten into one, but there is just something about them.

Well, I play MMOs, and Im afraid to tell my friends because I think they will think Im nerdy.
And if I think like that, and have to hide it, its probably true. #1. |

Uh, considering most modern MMO's are chat program's with mobs and skills I'm not sure there is a lack of social skills... Word your poll better next time.
Yes, most have their part in geekdom, but thats mostly because their RPG's set in a science fiction or fantasy setting. It would help to have a few gritty present time MMO's ala R6 or kingpin/GTA... Though anything that requires more than point and click without any thought involved is usually considered "too complex" for the average action fan. So, I may just be talking out of my ass. |

i think PLAYING them is fine. OBSESSINGH about them is nerdy. Like those guys who talk about it in conversations and have a minifridge next to their computer full of 'everquest supplies'

I have a friend who used to live for Everquest, and i mean live for it. He even called in sick at muliple occations just to play the damn EQ....he lost the connection to the real world for months. Finally he came to his sences and uninstalled the damn game and cancelled his account. He says that it indeed was like a drug to him (no joke) and that it was very hard stop playing it.
On the rare occasion when we got him to come over for beers or something he couldn't stop talking about what level he was and other EQ related stuff. I'm glad he quit the stupid game, i got a friend back... I know that not everybody get that way by playing mmorpg's but it seem to have other effect on people then regular games...

Playing them is ok, but its all too easy to get addicted to them. Once you're hooked it is nearly impossible to quit. You're living a life without leaving your chair. Digital interaction will never replace live, human contact. Even as a video game fan, I think a part of me dies everytime I start a game up. :/
Becoming addicted to them will turn you into a nerd, as you will begin to lose your social skills from lack of daily human interaction.

Naw Nerds are too cool for'em. This genre is for nerd wannabe's like me
Seriously EQ is damn addicting.. I know.... I played more hours than most of those people featured in 60 Minutes a few years back. I'd come home from work and play from 3:35 pm until 2-3am on weeknights and 18+ hours a night on weekends. Made lvl 50 before the first expansion. It wasn't until I after got married that I realized just how addicted I was. My wife became increasingly frustrated, angry, even jealous over that game. After 3 months of marriage she finally gave me an ultimatium. I quit EQ for over a year and a half. I'm playing again now, and a bit of EQ2 as well but under 10 hours a week usually. There are times I wish I had never played EQ for the simple reason that while I love rpg games, I can't seem to play one through these days. They seem sooo stale without the interaction of others. Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale Wizardy 8 got'em all but doubt I've got 20 hours played between'em. They simply fail to hold my interest. All of your statements quite valid. I'm glad none of you have had quite the experience that I had!

personally they've never appealed to me, I play games rather sporactically, play for an hour or 2 every day for a week then don't play for a few then back again, don't think I could get into something that requires that much focus. Most of them don't really have a theme thats geared towards my interests. Although the star wars one could have been interesting.
I just like to play my games blow some stuff up, or race, and thats about it. |

i just don't get it
Typically an 'average' MMORPGer plays online around 20 hours a month. I don't know where these people find the time... I can barely find 20 hours a month to use my PC in general after work, house maintenance, other hobbies, kids, etc. I've heard that hard-core MMORPGers can go 80+ hours/month...wow.
In addition to that, you have to pay money every month to keep your account alive. So even if you want to take some downtime, to play a new game or because you've become bored, its costing you money. if you invest 500+ hours into a character, its unlikely you'll let the account expire. i'd much rather play a stand-alone RPG like Baldur's Gate or Morrowind than play MMORPG. At least with stand-alone games there is a focus on plot and storyline...the best RPGs in my opinion balance 'contrived focus' with 'individual flexibility'. MMORPG have to cater to the lowest common denominator, plus force its users into a never-ending upgrade quest for items through expansion packs. For myself, online gaming is limited to four experiences: - FPS, specifically Counter Strike and Day of Defeat - RTS, specifically Age of Empires or Warcraft... not my (nor my mouse's) favorite genre - Turn based strategy, like Civilisation or slow Europa Univeralis. Oh for a revived X-Com and Panzer General series! - Web-based games like Chess or Hearts or Poker through Yahoo games, etc. The only 'RPG' i've played online is Diablo2...which has no monthly charge. Pay for a monthly experience, after a computer + DSL + game license? I don't think so.

The appeal of a mmorpg is the same as that as a forum. The interaction with people. While all of us could look for information on our own we come here to do it. The best MMORPG I ever played was Phantasy Star Online because of my network of friends on it. It was a blast even though the game itself is boring as hell lol
