How to enable 16:9 on a 17"?

Okay, my question is this: Is there anyway to enable 16:9 for games on a 17" screen? Cuz I'd like to play it like that but I mean, do I have those black lines like widescreen edition movies or no? Is it stretched to the screen? You guys understand my dilema or no? My english to weird?

I think it depends if the game supports it. If it does, and you do 16:9 on a 4:3 monitor, it should put black bars on the top and bottom, like a widescreen movie.

But for HL2, when I do that it doesn't put the black bars but if I take a screeny, it's fine... Strange eh?

LOL no not really... Okay, I have a 17" screen which handles up to 1280x1024... But I wanna play in wide screen (1280x720) which is 16:9... But when I set this, the screen is stretched and the game looks hideous... I was wondering, is there anyway to get the letterbox thing on (the black lines on the top and bottom) to keep the image from distoroting?

Go into the display properties and click on your display. There should be the option not to stretch the image. If that doesn't work you should also be able to do it from the monitor itself. ATi still needs to do some work on how we can control our LCDs

Well the other way would be to use your monitors controls and see if you can do anything from there. If it is an LCD though I have no idea if you could do that.
