I haven't touched an RTS game in awhile, but I still consider WC3 and FT to be great RTS games.

Warcraft III + Frozen Throne can be found for 39.99 or less. It is accessible and not too deep, but really great with skirmish modes. And the highest AI settings are good. C&C Generals is good with more forgiving AI.
If you want more depth (i.e., have free time on your hands) try Age of Mythology or Rise Of Nations (Gold versions for 29.99 or less). These games basically kick late comers in the hiney, though I have not tried Dawn Of War yet (I have it, but I am kind of searching for a 1.10 executable for the US version shipped patched to date (Vengeance's offering doesn't work). I bought DSKINS and they work so I now play using those. I have heard so much about Warhammer, but I haven't really sat down with it. Skirmmish modes really give lasting value if you are not into online play. Empires Dawn Of The Modern World is around 19.99 and it has good AI. Ground Countrol II is more "tactical" but has hands down the most beautiful graphics and camera work. It is based on controlling zones more than resource collection and base building. I am kind of sorry I bought Warhammer, it was an impulse. The new RTS and Strategy games really do not bring anything new to the table worth mentioning. Age Of Empires or Age Of Mythology Or Warcraft III is what I would recommend. |

Advance Wars is THE best strategy game. I posted an online version in another thread last week.
If we're talking board games, then stratego legends is pretty damn awesome.

one of the most overlooked strategy games would have to be blitzkrieg it required the use of artillery and warplanes before you could effectively use any of your tanks or infantry and pulling off a good strategy always seemed like poetry in motion. multiplayer is fun but finding is a server is difficult

C&C Generals & C&C Generals Zero Hour:
Fun, but Single Player is "way" too easy even on the hard AI setting. There are some levels on Warcraft III I still haven't beat on the hardest AI setting, and the story telling is superb. |

There's a decent strategy game for the computer called Moonbase Commander. It looks like it was marketed for kids, but the strategy is on an adult level. Tons of fun.

I still play WarCraft II on battle.net. I think it might possibly be the most fun I've ever had with an RTS game. Other than that, StarCraft was pretty good...the original Command and Conquer(better than all the spinoffs), Emperor: Battle for Dune, and Homeworld 2 kicked @$$.

I still think WC3/TFT are the best RTS's out there, but C&C: Genrals is really good, so that's also one the best ones.

Rome: Total War is the most in-depth RTS I've ever played it's awesome, but you have to like the campaign part to really like the game.
Aside from that C&C Red Alert 1 is my fav with Star Craft following closely behind

best strategy game?
for what its worth, i don't consider RTSes to be real strategy games -- they're fun, but they're click-fest tactical action games at best.
In terms of depth, Europa Univeralis II is probably the high-water mark for the past 2-3 years. Civilisation III is good, but its just a step up from Civ II. I agree with Yaytitsandrew (hehe) that Advance Wars is solid -- I don't own a gameboy, but found myself addicted when I borrowed one in an emergency room ward...that 4 hour wait flew past. ![]() I've also read good things about Korsun Pocket, but I haven't played a hardcore military sim for a few years.

Total War Rome

Real time games can be strategic, but there must be a heavy weighting on thinking/planning vs mouse clicks. Total War Rome made alot of 'best of the year' lists so I will definitely have to try it out...

The battle for Middle Earth, RTF + Hobbits and Goblins and stuff. Really cool. I think you'll like it. I have Rome Total War, Haven't played it yet. Going to play it when I finish Vampire Bloodlines the Masquerade.
