I'd say that it is altogether a pretty good game. Although they haven't taken the concept that very much further than with the original, the core of the game is still built around a very entertaining concept. It's also a game that one can jump into for just an hour and have fun with right away, regardless of how far one has come with the current character. The feel that a pirates career is very much limited in time is certainly there especially on the higher difficulty levels, where even the best pirate may have to retire sooner than he'd like.
The lack of any substantial depth or little things like how one cannot customize the look of the main character tends to make it a little short lived perhaps. But then again it is pretty much a console-style game anyway. And one can certainly start over with a new career as a pirate in different time eras in the carribbean just like in the original. Except for the glitch with flickering intro video when AA is enabled the game seems quite free of bugs and is fairly well polished. And then there is also the dancing.

My roommate has played it and said it is pretty decent. Never played the original though so no comparisons here.
I myself have nothing to contribute to this topic other than.. ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Sadly though, there is no Rum or Grog in the game. Rumor has it that they had to take that out to get the Teen rating. No demo in sight, yet anyway.

I want a nice strategy game to sink my teeth into over the coming month. the new lord of the rings battle for middleearth looks good (and sounds amazing).
I read the review for pirates on gamespot - 5-10 hours play, then you can replay again. Not sure this game is for me, I replay nothing once its beaten. |

lol zardon check out battalion at www.urbansquall.com it is a turn-based online strategy game like advance wars for the gba. It's in beta now but if you started playing I bet you could move like half the driverheaven regs there for some sort of driverheaven takeover.
I wrote a tutorial in their forums if you are unfamiliar with the advance wars style play.

Warhammer 40k was wonderful, too short though, looking forward to some sort of expansion pack for that one.

That Pirates! game looked a little creepy to me...the whole "dancing" segment of the game reminds me of Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball for the XBOX all over again.

I'd stick with "The Secret of Monkey island"

barque & rapier!
Desperately interested in whether the new Pirates is any good.
I cut my teeth on the original Pirates... no, not Pirates: Gold, ~Pirates~ on an EGA 16 colour monitor. I got so good I'd take on Portugese Man-o-War with a Barque, and defeat the captain in 3-4 blows before my crew died in the fighting. If the new game is anywhere close to the same level of fun, I might be willing to buy it...if only for the nostalgia factor. PS Anyone hear of the rumours of a new 3d Civilisation 4 in development? I don't think I can handle anything w/o 2d tiles...

You'll get plenty more shiptypes and more variation in the swordfights. A top-ten list of famous pirates in the carribbean to fight over, and if you steal a pirates dug down treasure they may take the fight to you. I'm sure you'll like it.

SID MEIER PIRATES
Well it's good and very simple but it's very repeative After a while you just do the same and the same things all the time I have finished the game with the Rank GOVERNOR but after finishing it i am rather bored playing with it again... |

I liked it quite a bit but agreed, it does tend to get a bit repetitive after awhile. The novelty wears off very quickly, but it is quite addictive for the first few days. I'm definitely going to return it while I still can....just a taste was all I really needed on this one.

The original was more fun. You could attack any town/city you wished by land or by sea. You were made offers to release pirates you captured and it was hilarious to capture and keep whole families while waiting for the right ransom offer.
This new one just has updated graphics, new style of fighting for a town/city, dancing, fencing, and different ammo for ships. I would go as far as saying the original is much better. This new one seems a clone copy of the original minus things I liked, and added things I care little about. I firmly believe if anyone other than Sid Meir created this game, and there was no original Pirates to speak of, this game would have gotten a much lower score than was generally given in reviews. |
