Rome: Total War Issues - WM9 Codec?
I've ran down every single provided solution for Rome:TW crashing to desktop.
The most common solution seems to be, install the provided WM9 codec, download and install them from Microsoft, or download and install WMP10 from Microsoft. I've done all of these. All the videos the game has will play without a hitch outside of the game, but won't in the game. It just causes me to crash (I think) since I can only get to the Activision spinning logo video and it crashes after that. I haven't been able to play the game since I can't even get to the main menu. I've reinstalled the game with various methods (from CD, desktop install, and making and using ISOs) with and without the 1.1 patch. I've installed/reinstalled WMP9 and WMP10 several times, i've done the provided WM9 codecs, I've done the MS provided WM9 codecs, I've even done the WMV codecs from various codec packs. Any specified video that requires WM9 codecs or higher will play on my system without a problem. So i'm not sure what the problem is. I've got the latest Omega drivers, i've got the latest SB Audigy 2 ZS drivers. No other game I've tried have this problem. |

There has been quite a lot of users getting issues with the videos in this game. Usually just having a clean install of a system with WMP10 should handle it fine. If you have some generic "codec pack" installed then try uninstalling it. Or try flipping that WMV acceleration setting on or off in the display properties Options tab. Lastly you can also try avoiding to have the game play those intro videos by going to the "\Rome - Total War\Data\fmv\" folder and rename the two WMV videos to see if they're the only ones causing the trouble.

NO! do not install WM10 and R:TW!!! (unless they have patched the game that i'm unaware of)
this will cause cursor trails and all sorts of problems with the game. it took me a very long time to find out the cause of it too. however, as soon as i rolled back to wmp9 everything was fixed. |
