What happened to the classic games?

Since 1990 I have been playing Computer games. Today I had a yearning feeling...
and I asked myself: “Why am I not seeing classic games anymore?”
Games like: Syndicate, Police Quest, Gabriel knight, Another World and games like these. These games are inscribed in my memory. Even with the poor graphics and sounds comparing to today’s standard they left a mark in my life.

Well, two of the titles there were from the now practically dissolved Sierra. Perhaps one day we'll see those titles reappear? Afterall, Swat came back with their 4th installment after a long hiatus.

Problem is: Most of the classic games are owned by EA, Serria or have shared rights to them.

The other problem being that games are designed to be bling. Bling makes cash. If a publisher was able to con you out of $50 with graphics then its job is done. So therefore it will push its publishers to think the same way. Things like story and backstory, plots and subplots go to the wayside. These things really make gameplay come alive for me more than graphics ever could.

I've played a few memoralble games within the last few years but they didin't sell 4billion so they were seen as "failures". HL2, Theif 3, and Vampire are some good examples. Did they forever change me? No, as the one thing they all missed out on was delivering "the whole package". That and two of the three were filled with showstopping bugs. All three of them shorted out because they simply were not long enough for my tastes.

That leads us back to the publishers. Thusly the public are at fault for buying their crap. The publishers have too much creative control over companies. Vote with your wallet and good games will come around eventually. Support the startups and independant companies that actually make good games.

For anyone who enjoyed Wing Commander, you should play Descent: Freespace. It's the same classic space combat with some narrative but it's a fairly recent game with decent graphics.

For other classic games:

Play Syndicate Wars!!

(toward the bottom of the page, there's a link to download the game, 30mb)

" all of which add up to 150-200 hours of playing time." This is what most games lack today. Might be the reason so many people play MMO's these days. Dunno.

First game I remember playing was ping-pong, on the first Atari console. Black and white. 27 years old btw.

And how about Starflight? It was my first space sim. Awesome exploring and adventuring.

If you liked Wing Commander check out this Privateer remake along with Vega strike. Two good games.

I since, never had that game lust of the old classic games until I played WoW.
