So what do you use? And if ever, since you guys know this, what is the best?

i run everything but aa/af at max with 1024x768 on my 3 year old dell/sony 19in crt.i have maxed aa/af in cod and cod ou and i really dont see that big of a difference to be worth the performance hit.atleast not on my current monitor.maybe if i had a decent lcd with quick responce time i would feel different.

2xAA, 4xAF on my 9700pro for Counter Strike: Source @ 1024x768. It chugs from time to time (e.g. lots of players + smokes + gunfire in office) but usually is sufficient... i can hold a respectable 50fps, supposedly 72fps in the video test.
I doubt I'll be upgrading my videocard anytime soon.

i used to hit 1280x1024 at 4xAA and 8xAF
but now with my new monitor i try to play at native res of 1920x1200 which means i have had to drop down, although play with 2xAA and 4xAF if FPS are ok nana |

Depends on the game really, at 1600x1200 sometimes I never notice a lack of AA, but i normally have AF on 16x if the game supports it.
Farcry for example I would play with HDrrendering on at 1600x1200 which obviously doesnt support AA but the dual 6800 ultras still allow it to be run at 50fps+. On the other hand, something like NFSU2 needs AA as the edges of the cars can tend to look harsh. So my answer is "depends". |

I don't play games that much anymore
. But when I play a game like CS I like to have AF on max. I hardly ever use AA because my system is getting a bit old and it can't handle it that well anymore

I've done 2xAA 4xAF with some spikes but still extremely capable. Only problem I've had is a 10 second spikes when the bomb blows in source. I've since turned it down for CAL.

i usually play on 1024x768 and everything max except 2 AA and maybe 4AF, although i put em both at zero when it comes to high demand games such as Far Cry and Half-Life 2 ...

None, but sometimes I'll try and put in some AF, although it's mainly due to the fact that I like a smooth constant FPS, even though I still have a 9800Pro.

1280x960 or 1280x1024 no AA/AF unless the card can push out an average FPS which is in sync with my monitor refresh rate (ie: 85 FPS for 85 Hz). Can't stand tearing!

i play at 1280x1024 with 4xAA and 8xAF. i like it to look pretty
i have also noticed that enabling AA in game rather than on the control panel hurts performance for some reason. i see this in HL2. so i usually just enable it in CP and leave it

ok, i do sometimes turn down/off AA, at higher resolutions i can't tell a difference anyways.

Those who have a decent budget card or better should definitely try using at least some Anisotropic Filtering, because even say a low mode like 4x does a lot better than no Aniso at all. AntiAliasing can largely be substituted by using a higher resolution if the monitor can handle it. But Aniso is always useful at any resolution, as the texture quality of surfaces going off into the depth of the scene is being wasted without the help of Anisotropic Filtering. More and more games have their own settings for Aniso today but many still need the help of a forced driver mode. On most cards a low level of Aniso like 4x is as good as free performancewise, as is 2x AntiAliasing if the monitor isn't good enough for the higher resolutions. With the notable exception of some game engines that does not take well to AntiAliasing being turned on.
Don't feel bad about it if the card you have can't handle the performance hit (I'm currently using a GF2-MX myself... ), but I know that many who does have good cards squander the image quality when they could get better without any real loss of performance. I agree there sandok. I've played with the AA/AF settings maxed but I just dont see the difference above 4x and 8x. Just seems a drop in perf. for little extra.

Never actually tried playing with AF. *Shrug*
Not sure how I would do that with CS:S though. Guess I would have to create a RadLink, right? |
