Miscellaneous Game Probs in XP
Argh, my worst fears came true...Jedi Outcast (slowdown for environmental transitions in EAX3 mode), GTA 3 (strange choppyness for no reason), and Baldurs Gate 2 (unable to use 3d acceleration, no matter the driver revision or compatibility mode)...all run fine in Win98se....
What is it that's making them run this way, it is fixable, I know it...what IS IT!? argh...any help would be great if anyone knows anything about these three games that just refuse to work correctly. |

This really doesn't pretain to this that much, but before in some other post you said your NEVER have defragged your HD. Why not do that... Won't help totally. With GTA3, go to display properties>troubleshooting>then move the slider one notch to the left. That might fix GTA 3.

Well, ran speeddisk on my drives...main one with windows and GTA3 was only 5% fragmented and "didn't need to be" defragged...but did it anyway...
No dice. Will try the troubleshooting slider next... |

I'm assuming you've updated all of the drivers, along with Windows itself?
Try disabling sound in the games. If the games work fine sans sound, it could be a problem with your sound card. Otherwise, it's probably some sort of video problem and you'll have to waste your time trying the million or so Detonators in order to fix it.

I had some problems with my Direct X games - I had just uninstalled Hydravision (didn't need) it and I thought that it had messed up Windows XP - I reinstalled Windows XP SP1 (which someone said can fix some driver problems. It turns out that the eradic ocassional mouse problems I had in Direct X was apparently due to dirt/dust in my old ball style Logitech MouseMan wheel PS/2 mouse.
Game problems can be hardware caused and not just software bugs. |

Okay, GTA3 has a problem with EAX Advanced HD (according to creative) so that fixed that...but Baldur's Gate 2...ARGHH!
I love the game, and I love playing in full fidelity, so I just boot into Win98se and it runs flawlessly with hardware acceleration but loads slower because win98 is on my crappy hard drive. My WinXp partition looks like this... WinXp SP1 Via 4-in-1s v. 4.43 (and tried 4.38) Nvidia Detonators 40.72 beta (and tried 29.42 WHQL) Creative Audigy .283 revision "Audigy 2" drivers, also tried .253 drivers Baldurs Gate 2 w/ Throne of Bhaal expansion, patched fully. Okay, I'm speculating that there is a problem with OpenGl compatibility. What happens is I enable 3d acceleration (which BG2 uses OpenGL for 3d) and test, I get a 8 color, 160x120 screen and it displays, doesn't crash. Go into the game, same resolution and color depth...doesn't fix itself. If I disable Hardware Acceleration, everything is A-Ok. Now, my Win98se partition is using all the same drivers as my XP partition (except the WinXP ones are for WinXp and so on for Win98se)...and I'm playing the game through windows 98 se FROM my Windows XP partition...so it's not a different install, and not a different harddrive. I have a feeling there is just some weird thing I have to fix with OpenGl...but I don't know what...anyone ever had a problem like this in another OpenGl game? Possible fixes anyone? |

That was the dumbest thing I ever heard...
My soundcard and chipset drivers are WHQL certified, my nvidia dets have never failed me, ever. I can't say the same for a lot of the 41.xx series. It's the infinity engine, it sucks with openGl, I realized that when I got icewind dale 1 and 2...in 1, you can 3d accelerate and amazingly it works...but the texels are improperly aligned...in Icewind Dale 2, which was released AFTER neverwinter nights, there isn't even an option to use 3d acceleration...BECAUSE it's CRAPPY on the damn infinity engine...I'm so mad. Other than that, GTA3 is fine...Rockstar says EAX HD won't be fixed because not many people use it, bastard lazy asses. But Doom 3 runs great, and the same with Mafia and NOLF2. |

It's the infinity engine, it sucks with openGl Really, well maybe my older G2, is less affected, Ive had no probs with the drivers. or EAX HD even on GTA3. That card is older as well, SBlive Did have a bad experience with, XPSP1, Beta 1081 though, NEVER AGAIN Just curious, does BF1942 use that engine as well, Cause same deal, no Open GL support, or options. Had a hell of a time with it, my card was blacklisted in readme, I got it running smooth anyway, I never give up. Modified some directX settings, and believe it or not, Windows Swap file settings, worked for me May sound DUMB, but HEY, as long as it works ![]() Hope ya get ERR solved in time for Xmas Bud Best of luck !!
