:drools: Yes! I am sick and tired of using a damn controller to try and drive or aim - it just doesn't work. For some things you just need a computer, and GTA is one of them...

Nexus, reason its so hard to port games from consoles that are very un-PC-like (aka anything that isn't an Xbox) is because everything has been optimized to run on that particular console, and a lot of the time special console-specific functions are called, and for more complex graphics, they have to be rewritten to work with a video card instead of a graphics-oriented CPU in a console. Machine-level language is different to, so any hand-coded machine language would have to be totally redone, and then after all of this they have to do compatibility testing, because consoles have extremely limited changes in configuration, while there are hundreds of thousands of computers with different combinations of parts and software out there that should be able to run the game, and some of those won't for some strange reason or another, meaning that they have to write patches like crazy for the code to work on the different PC configurations. They also have to complete revamp the input system from a controller-based one to a mouse/keyboard based one, write protocols for key binding and all... The list goes on and on, and essentially, you can't just simply click a little option that says, "Compile for x86 PC" instead of "Compile for PS2" and expect it to work, and that is the reason ports are more involved than most people think.

Hrm... I don't think so.
The nice thing about PC games is the myriad of compression options available, both texture and sound... I'm guessin' that VC's kickin' 80's soundtrack would do just fine as a series of, say, .ogg files (I can dream, can't I?) while taking up very little space... that's what they did with GTA3's radio, and they crammed all of that game onto 2 CDs... and CD1 was practically empty!

Yeah, I thought they'd have been out for a while already. Why bundle 3-5 disk games when you could just shuck it all on a DVD? ("Cost, the fact that not everyone has a DVD drive, technical issues.." SHUT UP BRAIN! )

Exactly, now people can actually use those DVD drives that come on their computers. When we bought our first PC that had a DVDROM drive on it I was like "wtf do I need a dvd drive for, so I can watch movies on this tiny 17" screen with friends....hell no!"....now those drive can be put to use.

I personally think that Doom III is going to come out on a DVD-ROM, because that alpha was monstrous file for such a small and limited level, with only a few of the many monstors and props that we are likely to see in the final version. Also, I don't think that they are going to be bothered by the fac that not everyon has a DVD drive, since Doom III is going to be a newest-and-greatest-computer-only sort of program, and most of those (I'm guessing) have DVD drives, and with such a great game on DVD, it might be the spark that rejuvenates not just the computer graphix/cpu upgrade market as people have been speculating, but also the standardization of DVD drives for all new computers...

It's been a whole day, so I figure im allowed to double-post here... About the GTA3lag, I have a severe case of it, sometimes even driving into parts of the city that are very obviously not totally loaded (textures/models nonexistent or LOD biased to squares with 64x64 textures)... but I know that in my case, its because my hard drive is to full and I can't fully defrag it, so it's been non-de-fragged for the past seven months or so. I think that a quick scan/defrag will get rid of a lot of your problems with GTA3 lag on the PC.

EDIT: Well, in reference to the post below, my new post was on a totally different aspect of the subject at hand, on a different day, and it wasn't a spamming 1 liner - it was decent sized, like the previous one, so I didn't see the problem, however, this is the first forum I've been in that I've heard the double-post rule explicitly said (though not in the official forum rules), so I'm not totally sure about this...

Hope you chose G4 Dig, it works great we have one at our studio, as well as that other unmentioned stuff, it lags

Just being honest, and the competition for that card, hasnt even been released yet, makes you wonder, hmmmm

Thanks, both of you. I am the sort of guy who loves to start projects, and rarely completes them so I know some about a hell of a lot and I know a lot about very little This happens to be one of the things I tried - I wanted to write an n64 porting program that would essentially take ROMS and convert them to x86 w. hardware accelerated 3d. I was doing ok up til the actual programming part (I had psudocode that looked good...), but then I realized I would have needed to spend a couple of years learning assembly before I could really get that hardware acceleration working well... so here I am, working though a few online ASM tutorials and going on to other projects. I'll probably get back around to it at some point...

Well I think you know a HELL a lot more than you give yourself credit for, as DIG and I have noticed
Maybe you should complete something, you have the smarts, No doubt there. Assember, NOW your speaking my language
I'm an EET, assembler, is my domain, let me know if we can help.
Don't mean me and Dig, mean me and Merry, my bud from across the seas, were both EET's.
My bud Louie6666, should be able to help as well
Both on leaves of absense, hope to see them soon, miss them here on DH

Well ToshiroOC wherever you from, Canada, England and Romania
Hope you fair well keep up your studies,
PM me if I can help
