??? Should I buy GTA3?

I've held off buying GTA3 due mainly to the buggy nature of the game. Have the latest patches cured the bugs? What makes it such a great game anyway?

It's a great game, I've never experienced any bugs with it, If you have a monster PC there should be no problem, and if i recall you won that competition thingy didn't you? so your sorted, buy it! go buy it now! then buy Vice City when that's released!

Question

What kind of viddy card do you have again? GTA3 really seems to prefer nVidia over ATI, this really might be one you want to "try before you buy" just to make sure it works ok.

...it's my 3 year old daughter's and 5 year old son's favorite game to watch me play. They HOUND me to play it for them!

One problem, I agree with your entire assessment of why it ain't a game for kids to play.....

....so I end up playing GTA3 for them, but without killing or hurting anyone. Do you have ANY idea of how hard it is to play GTA3 for a half-hour without hurting someone or stealing a car?!?!

Oh yeah I know. It hard for me to even drive a car and not ram into someone intentionally. It is one of those games were you can't play it without having fun. You HAVE to mess something up to have fun.

Tell me about it! I can't even remember the last time I actually played a mission, I just fire it up and make me own fun.

If you ever find yourself a tad annoyed that they made all the cars so slow and boring, get yourself a copy of the car stat editing program and have some fun juicing 'em up. I'm still working on my ultimate GTA3 combo mod. Some replacement cars, about 5-6 mods, and a custom handling file. It's probably a work-in-progress that I'll never think is good enough to actually post, but it's a hell of a lot of fun to play with and goof around with!

Here, if you want you can just download me current version of handling.cfg. All you have to do to make it work is rename or backup your original "handling.cfg" that you'll find in your "G:\GTAIII\data\" folder (or whatever letter should go in front for your particular install ) to something else and stick mine in. That's it.

Fire up GTA3 and hang on!!!!

(Oh, and the usual disclaimers about mucking around with things that the gamemakers never intended for you to muck around with...but if it causes you grief just delete it and rename your original file back to "handling.cfg" and it'll all be honky-dorey. )

Nah, I felt it was much more accurate in my case to use "honky-dorey" instead. I'm much more honky than hunky.

Interesting - thanks Digi! I never really bothered to look around in my GTA3 folder for that sort of stuff to hack up, though i did put all of my MP3's in there... just in case I can't find it right off of the bat after I'm done posting, do you have the link for that GTA3 modding program? Thanks!

Sure.

Easy, no problem, and me great pleasure to have a chance to pimp an excellent GTA3 mod site one more time.

GTA3 Headquarters

A really sweet site, it's just starting to hit it's stride and get some really nice selections of mods & custom cars to add to GTA3. It also supplies all it's mods/custom cars in a self-installing form where all you have to do is click on the installer and point it at your GTA3 directory. (A real big plus for me since I'd rather focus me attentions at playing GTA3 than learning how to merge textures in it and such. )

I went entirely nuts and replaced almost every 'boring' car I could with something cool from their modded cars section, then tweaked them to insane levels. One of me faves is K.I.T.T. , which is pretty insanely sweet on it's default install.

Go nuts, it' fun.

:drools: I'm driving back home tommorow, the second I get home I'm going to just download this stuff like totally crazy and have a blast! WHEEEEEEEE! Again, thanks man. I get the feeling that this is going to absorb my time until my new years party (which won't be on new years). Invite my friends over, and borrow a projector from my mother's business (don't ask - long story, but its perfectly ok) and project some major 8 person HALO onto a 16' wall

the game is only violent if u want it to be!
put it on 'free ride', steer away from the pedestrians and keep ur fists 2 yourself
and it remains just an excellent driving game for all ages!!!

I guess the driving part of the game is where the real fun is, shame you need a monster PC to run it. On my amd 1.2ghz tbird, rad 8500, 256 ram it was NOT an enjoyable drive.

The actual gameplay imho is very shallow and basic. I took it back to GAME and got my money back.

The so called living, breathing city claims are as far fetched as they come.

Using your own mp3s was a nice touch.

DMA done a similar game for the N64 a few years back called Body Harvest, that game was awesome.

Yeah...I really have no drive to play this game...BUT it's a good game to just start up and drive around running people over in...which I haven't had an "instant pick up fun" game in a long time.
