Dungeon Siege fps drops...

Heya,

I've got a box as stated below, and when I run Dungeon Siege in multiplayer I, at certain positions in the game, get fps as low as 17! Average is around 40-50 in multi, everything display setting is set to max except gamma (default). Is this normal for my machine on this specific title?

I got the same setup, but I'm using RAMBUS PC 4200's instead of DDR on an ASUS P4T533-C mobo. I've never seen the FPS drop below 40 running 1280x1024x32 FSAAx2 and Anisox16. All in game options are maxed

Hehe, lucky you then!

I think this might be related to me using Catalyst 2.5 w/ DX9 atm. Downgraded due to extreme stuttering probs...

Btw, 1280 resolution isnt even an option for me in display properties. Did you do anything special to be able to set it as high?

What version of the game are you running?

Thumbs Up!

Latest public patch. Regarding the stuttering, try turning down hardware acceleration found in Display Properties->Advanced->Troubleshooting. Then reboot. This fixed all known stuttering for me

That display mode is unsupported by the game - but you can force it via the command line.

See http://ds.heavengames.com/faq/general_faq.shtml for more details

Sweet, gonna try that screen res later.

I tried to lower hardware acceleration earlier, as an attempt to fix Cat3.0 before I downgraded. I still experience some stuttering though, maybe I oughta try it again. I think I didnt reboot last time, seemd like it wasnt needed... guess I'm wrong.

But, if that really helps then this must be a problem w/ DX9. Shouldn't it be an issue for M$ DX-team to fix then?

Btw, you using DX9 together w/ Cat3.0, Cat2.5 or Omegadrive's mix between the two? I tried Omegadrive's version earlier, but it didnt work well...

Yeah, same here... I never try betas or unofficial drivers, but when I get less stuttering/better performance out of my ol' geforce2, then I try anythin...

You didnt have any stuttering/performance problems w/ Cat3.0 or? Did lowering hardware acceleration fix all stuttering issues for you in both OpenGL and DX? Btw, you know if there's a way to run Dungeon Siege in OpenGL?

Thx for all replies, since yer setup is a close match to mine, I really appreciate it.

Yes

Yes. Also fixed DVD accelerated playback
All the "stuttering" I have now is the game/demo's fault as it happens at the same point(s) with a Kyro2 and GeForce 256 SDR.

No you can't - but I'd ask why you'ed want to do that anyway. DirectX 8 is pretty decent and killed the age old argument of OpenGL has better colour saturation/definition. Just take a look at UT2003 - there's no difference in visual quality except that OpenGL isn't using any pixel shading.

Before you do, have you installed the Intel Application Accelerator 2.3?

Hmmm... have you also tried the Patented Uberlord trick of moving the hardware slider down one notch and lowering the hardware acceleration?

I believe he said he did in another thread.

And credit where credit is due - I read about it over at Rage3D. Can't remember the poster, but his fix worked for me and unfortunately the thread died as no-one else tried it (lower acceleration? dude wtf! that ain't gonna fix it!) due to personality disorders

More and more people are finding that it actually works - of course some claim they don't need it and some claim it doesn't work so as always your mileage may vary

Ah - which other thread? Also, don't worry - here in DH, you are the one who showed us the way so it's your trick - over at Rage3d, it's a different story I bet... and I can understand what you are saying about, er, personality disorders. [H]ordes of schizo's abound at one particular unnamed forum ...

Hmm.

You also might try changing the AGP voltage to 1.6, that sure cured most of my issues.

Dungeon Siege can be ran beyond 1024 x 768?!

How? Game options say only that. I just installed the game as of late. So I haven't gone all out with the tweaking

There's a commandline option to force any screen mode. But I can't find the article online anymore

Command-Line Parameters
EXAMPLE: "C:\Dungeon Siege\DungeonSiege.exe" nointro=true

Play at High Resolutions
However, be aware that these resolutions are not supported, so you may run into glitches or artifacts. You will also receive and error notification when you first start playing. To activate the resolutions, use the following command-line parameters. You can try other settings if your video card/monitor support them, just use the same format:

1152x864: height=1154 width=864
1280x1024: height=1024 width=1280
1600x1200: height=1200 width=1600
