Don't think Quake 4 can be compared to F.E.A.R., they are too completely different games and the only thing in common is they are in the FPS genre. F.E.A.R. is awsome, and I will compare and contrast both when I pick up Quake 4, I don't see how bashing F.E.A.R. helps with the discussion about Quake. I haven't heard anyone tlak about the multiplayer in depth yet, how is that going?

The multiplayer is basically just a buggier Quake III arena, I haven't had any problems but I have read that alot of people are having bad lagg issues. Anyway, if you like arena then you will like Quake IV multiplayer.

Even if it occasionally drops below 30FPS, it doesn't stutter AT ALL and is still very smooth..

I never ran D3 on this X800XL yet... so can't compare it to my 9700pro.

(X800XL @ 420/540 though- AI on normal.... 5.10 CCC AA and AF on app. pref. - control AA and AF through game.)
do you have a gig of ram? i think 1152x768 at ultra might be possible. that was the only thing that did it for me i think on doom 3. if i can run it at 1024x768 ultra id be happy. as long as it doesnt crawl like battlefield 2. i despise that game's performance. even fear is more efficient

Now that I've played both, well of course I like both. However, Q4 is packed with action. I really do think the big deal is how much Fear was hyped. Plus it doesn't help when they mouthed off in their forums either.

Uhh, my ears... One explosion went totally off the chart in OpenAL mode and really blasted me through the speakers.

Btw, is there some way to raise the speech volume? It's a bit muffled at times compared to the surroundings.

Yeah 1 gig.. (see sig)
I actually turned AA off and it doesn't look a whole lot different.

I think I will play with less AA and more AF because AF does more for the IQ in this game.. It just seems like there are so few surfaces that benefit from AA, but that is a good thing. OpenGL does the rest.

I may try ultra settings, but if I get any stuttering it is going back to one click down from ultra..

I just had to come back and report that the more I play this game, the better it gets! It's freaking excellent. The levels are getting better and better. The gfx are stunning, the sound is great with 5.1 or headphones (playing with headphones now because it is getting late and the subwoofer is shaking this apartment). I haven't even installed FEAR yet... I guess when I get done with this, then play it through a second time, then I will install FEAR. Too bad D3 wasn't this good. They really did an excellent job on this game and I will be bummed when I finish. Everyone needs to buy this game and support the devs- they deserve it.

if you use ultra, fsaa is useless. i always use 16af in all my games no matter what level of detail it really helps. tell me how your beastly 9700 pro handles ultra.

I am using an X800XL at 420/540.. You can't run Q4 with a 9700pro on ultra if I get 40 to 60 FPS with my card on one tick below ultra.. (is it called quality?, didn't check)

I doubt you will be running 16xAF either. It will look good no matter what though.. but I think the 9700 is just to old to be cranking up the gfx settings with this game.

My drivers are all up to date and I'm running the 81.85 forceware drivers. I always run driver cleaner... I wish I remembered what the error message said. I think it had some memory addresses on it or something. I've been trying to find answers on google, but I don't find much. It stutters sometimes...bad.

That sounds that GL errors, you might be missing some files, I had the same problem with doom3 on my old pc, I ended up missing some dll files that the OpenGL uses.

I can't even run the game on ultra with the X800XL overclocked just a little less than BWX (420.75/533.??), it is really stuttery.

OK, I bought the damn thing, and its a great deal of fun. I don't know the quale story or anything, but this game is intense with action. One thing... it is f*cking HARD! I am having a terrible time just staying alive. Don't get me wrong, thats a good thing, I like a chalange. I honestly dont remember the last time I had trouble staying alive in a game, usually their like movies to me (just sit and watch, and its over), but this one is hard. Well back to playing...
BTW *brag* It looks amazing on my system *brag*
(Sorry, first new game for the new system, I just had too)

I bet it does look astounding on that 7800... even on a much slower card it looks amazing.. I am going to try ultra now, but I doubt it will run smooth.

It is so refreshing to have a game that you can't really complain to much about, it seems for the last year or so the really good games have been so few and far between.

I love that the doom3 engine can look so good on even a lower-powered system. It looked great on my old 5900xt and 3000+ I wish that companies would focus on writing better, more efficent code than relying on the newest hardware. Look at what they can do on the consoles.

Just wondering, what difficulty level? I started out on the default level.. I think one from the bottom... it is mostly easy and some slightly challenging spots.

I think it is fun to play through the game once on default difficulty, especially in a game like this that it is fun to just look around and check things out.

It will be fun on the harder levels though I am sure.

earlier somebody in this thread made an excellent point about the graphics and how even the little things such as smoke coming from a guys breath could be seen as he is talking or breathing in a very cold room...I noticed that when I got to that point in the game and he was right...wow that really adds such a level of realism to this game...I added 3 screen shots that demonstrates just how cool of an effect it is

the graphics are really amazing in this game, and they really seemed to get much better as you moved further into the game...I'm in the Level called "Nexus Hub" right now and enjoying every minute of it

I just started Level 13-Strogg Medical Facilities...and I think it's the best cutscene I've ever scene in any PC game...it's so believable that it almost hurts to watch it...Wow I just finished re-playing that part over like 5 times....those who have gotten to this point know what I'm talking about...really really amazing scenes...

were these Strogg the inspiration for the Borg from Star Trek? they seem very similar

What changes? I'm not really into trying out "beta" drivers... Bad experiences.

I really need to point this out as ive been reading some people talking about "ultra" mode - this isnt just addressed to T100 but to those mentioning it. Ultra mode basically requires a 512 meg card as it will be using uncompressed textures which total around 500megabytes. Therefore if like most of us you are using a 256 card, it has to page those additional textures into system memory, this will obviously cause game "stalls" in sections which would be noticeable to almost everyone. However how you can offset this a little is to have very fast system memory, and the more the merrier (2 gig is the amount ID software recommended).

It is just a point worth making, high quality setting is superb and offers great texture compression optimisation and for most people, unless you have a top of the line LCD and are playing at high resolution the difference between high quality and ultra will be minimal.

were these Strogg the inspiration for the Borg from Star Trek? they seem very similar
Funny, the borg comparison was something I thought about when I reached that amazing level last night.

The game just gets better the further you get into it. im giving this my game of the year.

Yeah I couldn't even run ultra.. it crashed and gave an error after loading the level.. For me it doesn't matter- the game looks awesome on high quality..

This might be the most fun I have ever had playing an FPS.. must... sleep... must... sleep... now......
