I Just bought it, very pretty. Something seems to be missing though I can't put my finger on it but something bout the game is a little off. Multi was funny but not really my type of thing. I have played through the single player a bit and its pretty easy, just kinda point shoot run, point shoot, run though the storyline is well executed.

the game runs amazing even though I have an "older" 9800 Pro card...I'm playing at 1280 x 1024, with 2X AA and Vsync On...the only minor hiccups I experience is when a checkpoint Save kicks in my system freezes up for a few seconds while the Game is saved, but other then that I can maintain 30 FPS and for me that is fine...the graphics get better the further you get in the game

I just think OAL is better developed than EAX. EAX often seems a little heavy-handed, with abrupt transitions of effects between different 'sounding' areas. OAL is much more subtle (at least the Q4 implementation of it is) and extremely realistic.

P.S. The driver readme does say it might break Creative apps. . .but I don't use any of them!

I'm luvin Quake 4...my only complaint is that the game is too Easy...there always seems to be a medic (for Health) or tech guy (for Armor/Shield) around to heal you back to 100...you can ask those guys to heal you at anytime by clicking on them and they will always heal you to the max of 100...makes the game a bit too easy like that

*by the way I'm playing the game on the Lieutenant Level, which is the 2nd hardest level

I am a proud owner of the DVD edition. What I do after I buy the game I consider ok as I have a hard disk. I want to send the dev team pizza money. Anyone know a good address (Real address not yer home) so that I could do so? I spent 60$ on the game and they probably made 20$ off of that. While money is great, getting free pizza is even better. Hell, better yet, I could pre pay for delevery to drop it off lol.

is there really that much of a difference between getting the CD version as opposed to the DVD version??...I mean cmon the only time you'll notice it is during the initial installation...after that only one CD is used throughout when playing the game so it really makes little or no difference in my opinion...is knocking a few minutes off the installation worth the $10 extra?

Much better than i expected. I like how it actually kind of feels reminiscent of quake 2. Reminds me of the old days playing quake 2 on my sweet new 16 MB Voodoo 3 3000 and trying to DM over 56k.

I doubt you will be running 16xAF either. It will look good no matter what though.. but I think the 9700 is just to old to be cranking up the gfx settings with this game.

inless you have a 500mb graphics card or 2 gigs of ram almost no one can play it on ultra.... Zardon explained it on page 1.

That's the thing, I cannot say because I don't have D3 installed.. but even NO AA and 4x or 8x AF, the game looks great. -even at low resolutions. I think even with a 9700pro you will have a good time. It is a taxing game, even worth an upgrade to see it with higher settings..

I'm not home so I have to wait till Mon. to finish the game.. As soon as I finish I will be starting over on a more difficult setting to check it out.

I'm at 60fps constant with max settings except AA. Silky smooth and oh so fun. With all the ATI CAT driver updates for Doom3 over the months .. this is running amazingly good. That alone is a mark against FEAR I'm afraid. (IMHO)

F.E.A.R. and Quake run about the same on my rig. I think Quake has an FPS cap and I want to Disable it. F.E.A.R with highest everything 2q AA highest res I can get gets a constant of 59 in the stress test.

Also I would have liked them to use a different engine than Doom 3's. Wish this game was some type of revolutionary.

I just think they could have built off it more. I haven't played Doom3 in a while but from what I remember it looks a little bit better on there (excluding player models). Maybe I just picky with it but I do not want to install Doom 3 just to find out which has better graphics. I just think they could have done a bit better and customized it more for Quake type gameplay. Hopefully online will get a little better.

Well Doom 3 isn't Quake 4. Doom just had indoor evniroments so it was easy to make perfect indoors but Quake is outdoor and indoor with so many different styles. I still find the graphics are top notch, not buggy, fluid, etc.

No it didnt - both Doom3 and Quake4 require a 512 meg graphics card to fully load all uncompressed textures into GFX memory, it is almost the same engine, quake4 is just a slight advancement on some rendering techniques. ID have had a little time to further optimise and advance the original Doom3 engine.

You "can" play ultra on a 256 card but you will notice some hitching, as I explained earlier this can be reduced by the speed and amount of system memory installed.

SFOSOK check your PM.

its something really wrong with the game.
doom3 works fantastic on my pc... q4 gots very very framedrops on many mplayer maps. i think its something with the dynamic lights.
it runs on many systems very bad. (with ati + nv cards)

smiliar to my thread here:

did you quote me because you are using "ultra setting" or are just saying there is a problem with Multiplayer mode? I have heard there are issues with MP but I dont play it so ive no idea. if of course you are getting lag with ultra mode (which would make me think thats why you quoted me), then try high quality not ultra. also there are settings in the system section to tailor the GFX to your system specs.

Incidentally for those of you with widescreen monitors (like me) you can set a custom resolution.

Edit the \base\DoomConfig.cfg file (with notepad, but make a copy first in case you make a mess).

Set the "seta r_mode" to "-1" in order to enable custom res
Set the "r_customHeight" and "r_customWidth" as you want.

I play in 1920x1200 so it looks like this for me :

seta r_customHeight "1200"
seta r_customWidth "1900"
seta r_mode "-1"

you can also mess with FOV (field of view) for example
seta g_fov "100"

"g_fov" command seems to get erased on exiting the game so make the file read only and it seems to hold.
