Is there that much of a difference between high and ultra? I ran it on ultra for a while, I didn't notice any hitcher, but the frame rate were not 60 (more around 45), so I went back to high. I couldn't tell the difference between the two, at all.

Generally its only really noticeable on a top end screen at resolutions like 1920x1200 (well to me anyway), its pretty much something that will vary from person to person. its just basically removing all compression from textures, however high quality has a very good IQ on textures also. the only way you would be able to make any kind of detailed analysis would be to store a game at the same frame, load it up at high quality, take a screenshot with fraps for example, set to ultra, reload, do the same, then overlay them in photoshop and toggle layers on and off. I might do it later if I can muster the energy. I think it might only be more apparent on specific texture surfaces also.

Someone also mentioned COD2 in here or another thread, that game takes advantage of 512 meg cards at high resolution, there was an article on it on the net last week, very interesting how 512 meg cards are starting to become useful.

I just finished it. The last boss sequence was typical, but well executed. I enjoyed the game. Overall grade of 8.5/10. So what's next? Shadow of the Colossus for PS2, probably.

Yeah the last boss was kind of predictable, but it was very well done. The whole game id give a 9/10, excellent story driven FPS and one not to miss

I hear Nvidia will be coming out with a 512 MB 7800 GTX card soon in response to ATI's new R520 line of cards...

geez I remember the days when 32 MB of video memory was good enough...now you need 512 of video memory PLUS 2 GB of system memory to run a game at the highest resolutions???

Yes.. I'm afraid you do. Seeing that there are video cards with equal amount system ram like you have , should be a hint that it's WAY over time to upgrade my friend. Do yourself a favor and get 1GB or more of the same ram you have and you'll notice a MAJOR improvement in your enjoyment of PC games. .. and about that proc.. maybe a 3Ghz is in your futrure too..

yes an upgrade is coming in early 2006...I'm waiting on the new Socket M2 mobo's from AMD to come out with DDR 2

but I can still play all the latest games even with my present rig with pretty high resolutions and a lot of eye candy turned on, that's why I can afford to wait...Quake 4, Doom 3, Half Life 2 all ran fine...I ordered F.E.A.R. and it is arriving Monday and I'm worried that it might be the game that brings my system down to its knees

the P4C800-E Deluxe was one of the greatest mobo's Intel ever produced

I noticed some settings, like the refresh rate setting, get erased in the regular config file (Quake4Config.cfg). When I made an autoexec.cfg and put the settings in there, they over ride the Quake4Config.cfg and don't get overwritten.. Maybe that would work for the custom resolution settings too.

I am going to try out the fov setting too. Maybe add a little more. Anyone know what default FOV is?

It seems ther eis an FPs cap, I looked through the commands and they don't list any way to get rid of it. Any ideas?

There must be a way-- they get higher than 60FPS in the benchmark.. I thought I remember there not being a way to do it in D3.. but I cared so little for that game I forgot.

Wow, this game is just getting better and better. The vehicular combat is a riot (probably the first time I ever enjoyed vehicles in an FPS). The cinematic portion of this game has a quality like HL2, which is great. The story is getting better and better, and the characters are developing. This is one of the best looking games I ever played, and as Zardon said earlier, the little things are what get you with this game. Raven really payed attention to the details on this one. This is possibly the best game I've played this year so far.

Yes this game starts off great with a high level of polish but by the time you get three quarters in you realise it really is a single player masterpiece right up there with Half Life 2. Extremely playable, I plan to play it again end of the year.

I find all FPS shooters "predictable" to be honest - but its a comment i find bewildering! why? well what on earth do people expect in a first person shooter? it is called "shooter" for a reason. I doubt anyone while constantly bickering on how poor "AI" actually is would want monsters that are better than the player at the game? I guess it would be easy for the game makers, put 4 gig of code into the Articial intelligence, then just design one level as no one would get past the first battle anyway!

Games are meant to be fun and perhaps an escape from real life, quake 4 has both of those in abundance, not many games in this genre anymore are "playable".

Just Received my copy today and just made the last hour giving it a run....After what seemed like an eternaty to install the files...

This to me is miles better than doom 3 and the graphics are jaw dropping to say the least.

Now im drawn between q4 and f.e.a.r....don't know which will be played the most once c.o.d 2 is released here..

Yeah I imagine it runs pretty crappy on an older card.. get an X800 of some kind (or NV equivalent) and you will be blown away by how good it looks and how incredibly smooth it is. Every time I fire up the game I can't believe how sweet the gfx are, and how good it runs on my mid level system.

I know the feeling, I have been there -- it SUCKS!
I got lucky and was able to put my X800XL on a credit card. Good luck on finding a job.
