Well.. I finsihed Q4 yesterday and today, I just finished F.E.A.R. When it comes to single player fun, QUAKE 4 winds hands down. Not even close. I'm still trying to figure out what excatly happened in FEAR.. sigh. What a waste of a great idea.

On the other hand, FEAR is a complete blast online with that slowmo feature in CTF or DM! I find myself playing that for hours at a time. I just wish there where more maps that came shipped with it.

Bloodys is on a distinguished road

It seems there is no direct way to make a Quake 4 demo file run again and again itself automatically with the timedemo command... and since there are not much "heavy" OpenGL games suitable for stability testing, we have a workaround (a simple batch file).

The code is available here: http://hwspirit.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=135

Interesting that the lowest ATi card is a 9700, vs the GF3 for nVidia. . .is this a little "meant to be played" bias? I mean, we all remember the famous DX9c GF3, right?

Money talks, I guess. . .

I tried the game on my lappy, with the radeon 9000. I was awful. I am surprised though, as I run Doom3 Ok on the low settings, Quake would not run faster than 15fps, everything was green, and the textures were completely flat, making everyone look like blobs with arms.

It'll take more than that to discourage me...q4 is outstanding and has totally surprised me..It's just way larger than i expected....and am still yet to complete the game yet...Just nice to see one game actually justify the prices of games over here in the uk.

The only main disappointment is some of the missions are a little like some that has already been completed..But the gameply overlooks that.

being this is about quake4 figure i would post this in here, if not please put in the proper place.

Question...

I just got the x850 xt 256 agp (2.6 intel/1gb ram), and took out ati's drivers and stuff and put in omega's. I figured this card would be dynamite with the game but seems to be lacking in the fps dept. Either i dont have it set up right or its not as good as i thought? In multiplayer i would be lucky to get 30fps being choppy. I went through some of the settings and turned off what i could remember from previous games like vsync and putting settings on performance instead of quality. i tried the benchmark in omega and was only getting 4800ish as a score, and when i look at the chart its way below the x800 that they have in it, its like 7000ish. i o/c'd it putting gpu at 580 and mem at 600 and it goes up to 5800-6000. Am i a total newb and have no idea wtf i am doing or is there something i am missing? shouldn't this card be slamming away the fps? almost forgot i was using medium quality and res at 1024x768

thanks and hope to here some answers..

Make sure you turn off AA with that game. I get constant 60 fps once I turn off AA. Everything else is MAXXED and I use 1280x res. Same card.. but more ram and bigger proc.. you should be seeing 40-50fps I would guess. Did you ever have Nvidia drivers on your rig?.. if so, get drivercleaner and wipe your system of any old drivers.

when u say AA i take it you mean anti-aliasing? if so i have it turned off in the game. is there a way to to turn it off via drivers? as well should note i get 50-60 fps when theres a few people like 4 people on a server, but as soon as u get like 6+ it bogs down to like 20ish or lower. btw i tried that drivecleaner and after i ran it took out nvidia drivers i guess that might be still sitting there my system crashed and when after xp reloaded it was like i just installed xp.. i had to roll back the date.

Nvidia drivers? What mobo do you have? Did you uninstall your mobo chipset drivers? If so you need to install them.. also make sure they are updated no matter what.

In the ATI CP- turn AA and AF to application preference.

Personally I thought it started off like - boring - more monsters hiding in the closet stuff. Would like to see some open spaces with strategy. Still after reading this thread I have decided to try a few more levels to see if I can get into it. Is a major expensive fault of mine - if I don't like a game - I really don't like it.

Ah, my guess was correct. You still have some old Nvidia drivers in your rig conflicting with the new ATI ones. Using Nvidia's uninstall feature will still leave files on your rig. Go and download this http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3214.html and run it to wipe your system of Nvidia stuff. THEN reinstall the latest ATI drivers 5.10a from ATI's site. This should fix your problem.

for drivercleaner? the download is at the bottom of the drivercleaner page, pretty easy to find, its the same place people like majorgeeks get it from then mirror it. always best to get drivercleaner from the homepage as sometimes those mirrors have old versions.

Well, this game was fun, but in my opinion was inferior to Serious Sam 2, FEAR, and pretty much every other FPS game that came out this past few months. Don't get me wrong, I love it, and I've played to 2 levels after the medical facility, but I just don't think that there was anything that makes it that incredible. Raven is one of my developers, I can't say how much I like almost every one of their games, but this was just one that was slightly less than stellar.

serious sam 2 better than quake? lol oh dear, cant disagree more. serious sam 2 is a fun frolic but hardly great. I think Quake4 is actually the best out of all the games you mention (F.E.A.R. = yawn same level for 12 hours), only FPS released recently to compare with it would be COD2.

::shrug:: Agree to disagree. Playing Serious Sam 2 over LAN with 3 friends was the most fun I've had playing a game in years. FEAR single player, to me, was more climactic and scary than any game I've played, and didn't feel boring to me at all. I thought the level design in it was creative. I do think that the environment looks better in quake 4, and with the exception of the characters whose faces you see, the models look better in quake 4 as well. I just thought that the level design in it was kind of bland. I got lost a few times because I couldn't distinguish whether or not I was already in the area. I'm not bashing Quake 4 at all with my comments, I would give it a high score in a review, but I just don't know. The weapons felt a little weak in that game, though they looked and sounded great. FEAR is the type of game that I get into so much though, that i can't play for more than 30 minutes without getting so jumpy that I need a breather; quake 4 is paced so that I was able to play for a few hours at a clip.
