If you're familiar with the game at all, I just got it and am at Balmora. I've been visiting the shops, asking questions, stealing a few items here and there, and even bartered a few of them away. I turned on the FPS and in the exterior scenes I'm getting between 18 - 22 while inside the buildings it goes to 25-40...depending on my movement. I do notice that if I move quickly...like run from place to place....or turn very quickly....there's a moment of hesitation while the scene loads. That's for about a second or so. If I were playing this in a multiplayer mode, I'm sure some of the hesitation would be more annoying, but it's not really that bad. The real test will be when I complete some training and begin to do battle. I'm really impressed at just how BIG and EXTENSIVE the options are. Asking the questions, reading the books, getting the Journal updated often, finding out and trying to determine which Guild to join, it all shows just how much there is in the game. Of course, the graphics are extremely well done. I know there will be a vast improvement once I upgrade my system, but, I'm really quite pleased with the way it's running on what I've got. I've been playing Morrowind for about a week and I think it's one of the best RPGs to come out in the last decade! I have ordered a Gainward Ti4200 from Newegg to replace my GF2 MX400, because I REALLY want to see what has been done with pixel and vertex shading in the graphics in this game. Right now, I have the shadows turned off, the view distance down to about one third, and AI distance down to about one fifth, all in an effort to speed up the screen refreshes while I play. I could turn the resolution down to 800x600, but I do NOT like the way that looks!

I've been really impressed. I'm actually seeing FPS in the 60 - 80 range.
I'm starting to get a bit more acclimated to the game and have advanced a bit since my last post. Even completed a couple of assignments. I can't BELIEVE the number of books in this game. LOL Dyre Straits |

the no-CD executable 'patch' that disables the Safedisc for Morrowind?
I use it and while I haven't checked my FPS, I know it makes for a much smoother experience w/ my Morrowind than without it. I've seen a couple versions of it floating around... there's the .ace file that has a generic safedisc patch on it, and an executable that replaces the Morrowind.exe file. You still need the CD, so it's not really a piracy issue but rather an improved gaming issue! I think they have it on RPG planet or something.

Other than the little textures-missing-problem the game is running great. I really like how you can drop some heavy equipment outside the doors to the trader/pawn shops and then go grab some valuable stuff in the crates and containers elsewhere. Bring them back and sell them and repeat to your heart's content. Once you're done wiping out the goodies, grab what you want to keep and move along. LOL Dyre Straits |

....you have to like that type of game. My older son is an AVID fan of Baldur's Gate and games like it. However, I can't really 'get into' that kind of game where the characters are 'on the board' and I'm moving them like chess pieces. I can play it for a while, but I have yet to finish a game that plays that way. With Morrowind, and it's toggle between 1st and 3rd person perspective, I can really get into it. It's a game that can be played at a person's own rate of playing, too. Anyway, I'm still enthusiastic about it. Dyre Straits |
