So I'm slowly getting more serious about digital photography, I work on one of two 17" CRTs (Sony and NEC). To ensure consistency in my output, I've been using the Adobe Gamma utility to ensure accuracy w/ Adobe RGB. There definitely is a difference with a Gamma-adjust monitor and just regular settings.
But... The Adobe Gamma corrections look like ABSOLUTE CRAP when playing FPSes. Definitely a lack of brightness, darks are far too dark. Generally speaking I think most FPSes look better when played with heavy colour saturation; hence the stronger contrast and brightness usually set on gamers monitors. However its a PAIN to go from one setting to another when changing tasks. i'm guessing some newer monitors have macros that 'remember' preferences, but probably nothing in the entry level. Anyone else have this problem? Any recommendations? (Note: 2nd monitor and KVM switch is NOT an option). I'm fairly new to this colour correction thing. ![]() PS Looks like LCDs aren't any better. Get 8ms response time w/ 16.2 million colours via dithering OR get 20ms response time w/ true 16.8 million colours. Grrrr

Most software for the PC does not assume that the hardware has been gamma-corrected already and will look much too dark, as you've discovered yourself. Use the in-game gamma settings to brighten things up, or set up profiles using ATI Tray Tools or whatever.
A lot of gamers, especially FPS-types, want the image to be overbright so that they can see even in areas which are supposed to be dark.
