So the other day I installed the new patch for BF2, version 1.12. Not long after this SAV10 reported adware.gamespyarcade.
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/ven...spyarcade.html What is the meaning of this? I know when I initially installed BF2 I didn't select the option to install the gamespy arcade. I ran the 1.12 installer again and there was no EULA present. Why would they install something without permission?

Gamespy is the ingame multiplayer browser, most of the pieces of gamespy have always been there... the patch installation probably just triggered a detection of some .dlls.
As for patches changing the EULA w/o notification, this is standard in the industry now. Microsoft is famous for using bug-fixes to change your user rights. As much as I love the BF2 gameplay, I'm tired of bad patches, bleeding expansion features into the vanilla game, and surrepticious software. I won't be buying another EA / DICE product. PS EA *owns* DICE... they bought 61% of the company a few months back. They're they same company now... DICE is just a 'brand'.

I know most games use gamespy, but I never got this warning before. I have had BF2 installed since the day it came out.
I know that it's BF2 causing the problem because the adware.gamespyarcade file is located in the BF2 directory. I have reinstalled windows recently and SAV10 was one of the first things that I installed after windows. I installed BF2 with the 1.03 patch and I didn't get that warning. The only thing that was changed recently on my computer is that I installed the 1.12 patch for BF2. I have other games that use gamespy as the "in-game" browser and they are not giving that warning. Oh, I also know about EA buying DICE. I also remember hearing that the team from Trauma Studios (Makers of the Desert Combat Mod for BF42) were shown the door after contributing their part to BF2. |

Speaking of shady tactics...
The authentication servers for Battlefield 2 and Spec Ops have now been down for 6+ hours and there is no ETA on a fix. This is a worldwide problem -- NO ONE can play BF2 right now. Looks like EA farked up both BF2 and BF:SF installs with their latest 1.12 patch. Yay EA! It will be the last EA product I ever buy...BF2 gameplay is awesome, but the support and patches make Microsoft look like angels in comparison.

Its not down, its just screwing up really bad, if you sit long enough the game will come up (took me around 15-20 minutes earlyer.) Also on the topic of how Dice is doing the bleeding over of SF weapons into normal BF, welcome to capitalistic america! How do you force some one to buy your expansion, make the people with out it miss out on really usefull items and gear! (From a business stand point, its genius!) |

official word was that the stats server only was down, authenticaion engine was still running.
whoever designed the BF2 client to not have a timeout on a non-critical gameplay element needs to be taken into the alley and shot. Error handling for external network components is programming 101 -- I'd fire one of my developers for making such an obvious mistake. BF2 is reminding me of a 1980s jaguar... great engine and styling, lousy reliabaility and back electronics!

FYI this isnt new and SAV10 picks up gamespy on other games I've installed (SCCT, FEAR) it wont even install the game if auto protect is on. This is just the gamespy files loading for install but you always have a choice not to install gamespy afterwards. Still, oddly SAV10 often detects gamespy on my comp out of the blue.

a lot of EA games come with that rediculous gamespy arcade... everytime i installed one of my battlefield games i ended up having a problem with gamespy. after installing battlefield 2 for the first time i declined the option to install gamespy arcade. later when my computer was slowing up and had a few explorer crashes, i ran my anti-viris scan and it found gamespy ON my system as a PUP... even though i chose the option not to install gamespy earlier it somehow installed some portion of itself ON my system... now thats just wrong, especially since it was causing my computer to disfunction... i myself wonder how that happened...
