A very good thread with a nice question deserves a follow-up question:
Just which current video cards actually support SM 3.0? Might be a nice handy list to have around.

i think what it does though is use some form of filter Blooming effect to give off the presence of heat or haze. might i add its a good trick but i dont think its HDR or Sm3.0. i could be wrong, can anyone clear this one up. ?

Doom3/Quake4 are Opengl and unless I am mistaken do not have either HDR or SM3 in game. Is it supported in the engine and just not being utilized yet?

The ATI x800 series will support HDR but not SM3.0; I've got HDR rendering available and working well in SC3:CT and HL2:Lost Coast, CSS, & friends. I gotta go back and reply Far Cry sometime soon, and see how that looks.
I'd imagine this is also true of the other x*00 models like the x600 as well.

Yeah, the cards he's listing are sm3.0 cards. HDR can be done with 2.0(and I'm sure 1.x by a tenatious programmer) so I'm guessing he's listing cards that can do both, when he should just say the sm3.0 capable cards to avoid confusion.
The problem is SM3.0 is not that much of a leap over SM2.0. 3.0 Is more of a revision of code than adding of new features. The code is faster and easier to use, but provides little better image quality. |

the 'faster' being the important part
![]() It tends to be sued largely in water, glass, and lighting/shadow effects, which can all be done similarly well in 2.0, but it does look different. The main issue is many developers are leaving out alternate 2.0 code, so if you can't do 3.0, it's reverting you to 1.1 |

People seem to be using the term "HDR" to mean different things, and some of those capabilities can be done with older hardware (generally involving an extra pass or two, ie, the HL2-style "overbrightness", which allows really bright lights to make objects brighter by a certain ratio, and vice-versa for really dim objects. In other words, you can represent pixel values with a brightness (or luminesence) beyond 0.0 to 1.0. You can accomplish this to do "light glowing" or "motion blurring" without SM3 and/or FP16 texture support, but having those helps.
Other people use HDR to strictly refer to supporting various floating point texture formats (see http://www.openexr.com/), which can represent a broader contrast range than your common 24/32-bit RGB-888 or ARGB-8888 formats and/or DXT1 compressed textures. In theory you ought to have a RAMDAC and output device which can do more than 8-bits per channel, at least 10-bits for the newer IL&M/THX movies, and/or supporting fp16. There's another pretty good document about HDR here (big PDF file): http://download.nvidia.com/developer...eagues_HDR.pdf

Noob question, but what's the advantage of SM3.0 over the previous versions?
Edit: Nm, you pretty much answered it... but I can't delete the post for some reason =|
